New upcoming crime drama, The Cage, starring Sheridan Smith (https://www.hellomagazine.com/tags/sheridan-smith/) and Michael Socha – and it could just be your next TV obsession.

Now if Miss SS gets to snog MS I will be very jealous

I loved him in showtrail and seem to have a little crush on him 💓
5 parts on weekly on a Sunday night x 5weeks

Filmed in and around Liverpool and Merseyside, the story centres around Leanne (Smith), a casino cashier who starts skimming cash from the safe to save her family home.

But when she discovers her boss Matty (Socha) is doing the same thing, both of their lives start to spiral out of control.

The newly released trailer shows Leanne, a single mum, and Matty, a gambling addict, form an unlikely partnership to keep their thefts a secret, but soon become entangled with brutal local gangsters and the police.

The series follows Leanne, a charismatic cashier at an inner-city casino in Liverpool, who starts skimming cash from the safe when she's threatened with losing her home.

When she discovers that her boss Matty is also taking money from the safe, "their lives are set on a collision course; with each other, the local gangster they're stealing from, and the police".

They're joined by Barry Sloane (House of the Dragon) as Gary, Geraldine James (Dope Girls) as Nancy, Anton Bibby as Thomas, Freya Jones as Emily and Sophie Mensah (Sanctuary: A Witches Tale) as Fen.

Sophie Mensah plays Amanda Ning
Rounding out the cast are Abby Mavers (Waterloo Road) as Kelly, Shaun Mason (Extraordinary) as Alan, Louis Emerick as Paul (The Power of Parker), Ian Puleston Davies (Tin Star) as Vincent, Julia Papp (Baptiste) as Irina, Katy Carmichael (Malpractice) as DCI Hannigan, Dave Hart (The Responder) as Danny, Eileen O'Brien (Not Going Out) as Nanna, Eithne Browne (The Responder) as Annie and Mona Goodwin (Extraordinary) as Trace.

Kin was far superior to this I think. When it is supposed to be is really confusing. As said up thread it’s hot uber and smart phones but the office of the casino looked out of the 80s or 90s. A huge computer monitor thingy and print outs on those pages joined together with all the holes at the side. Takes me back that does

Was looking forward to watching. Home early specially. Michael Socha and Sheridan Smith excellent actors. Sadly, I am finding it difficult to adapt to the amount of work Smith has had done on her face. I’m finding I’m more focussed on this impact than the script. Will get flamed but is what it is. Sorry.

I know what you mean and she has gone crazy with the amount of tattoos.

Ive only watched 1 episode but I thought it wasn't amazing..

I preferred Babies on IPlayer.

I suppose it makes a change from political dramas !

Yes and not a boring police drama.
Im just not sure its the best drama. But bbc dramas are not what they used to be...
I thought it would be gritter/ darker.

sunnydisaster · 26/04/2026 22:29

Started watching cis DH wanted to but it’s really not my thing & he fell asleep.
I thought it was in the 80s/90s with the computers and look of it.
Weird!

IAmKerplunk · 26/04/2026 22:33

Why were people thinking this was set years or decades ago? Within the first five minutes Marty is seen using a smartphone.

I agree with a PP that Sheridan’s cosmetic work is distracting.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 26/04/2026 23:53

Was the “did you get it” a warning? And why did he then go talk to his nephew (?)
v stressful

Yes, I think the implication is did you get the message I was sending you. Like no one is immune to punishment 🤷🏻‍♀️

Bunionbabe · 27/04/2026 03:11

I guess the man in the chair was going to be tortured.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 27/04/2026 05:04

I enjoyed this, although I was annoyed that she had kept the money in the wardrobe,
does she have cancer?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 27/04/2026 05:06

another Michael Socha fan,
relieved to find something worth watching

Boolabus · 27/04/2026 09:15

I thought it was good but stressful to watch. I also thought it was set in early noughties as office set up so old but then if they are using the casino as a money laundering outfit makes sense to use archaic less traceable account systems, which is why the head gang guy is checking numbers manually to keep an eye on any theft.

I agree Sheridan's plastic surgery was initially distracting but you forget it quick enough and she does look really well.

I think the ignored hospital letters were about her nan going into a care home which she is ignoring because it will mean her family lose their home. It is a council property and she doesn't have tenancy rights, that's what she was stealing money for to put deposit down for a house

Due to the old car regs and computer in the casino

surely it would be top of the art one

i thought the hospital letters were related to lung cancer

The computer, the casino decor is old fashioned old, slot machines are completely different now (I’ve been to a casino recently but not in the UK) - all screens and not a lever.

lazymum99 · 27/04/2026 10:33

She was looking at X-rays showing a shadow on the lung I think. But not sure whether her or her grandma.
Also if the have been living with and caring for the grandma for many years they might be able to take over the tenancy on appeal.

It looked like a pretty recent smartphone to me.

the80sweregreat · 27/04/2026 13:24

Sorry for thinking it was set decardes ago when clearly it isn’t. I probably wasn’t paying attention at first and it had an old feel to it.

I was disappointed.
So far just a miseryfest. Not sure I'll stick with it.

FannyCradocksDoughnut · 27/04/2026 16:38

I thought this was brilliant, not relaxing to watch though pretty stressful! I wonder if it's really possible to launder dirty cash through casinos???

PuppyMonkey · 27/04/2026 16:47

Wasn’t keen on this at all, didn’t pull me in at all. I also thought it was set in the past. The computer and the old printer, which sounded like the one I used to have in the early 1990s. Grin
