This looks fabulous!

My favourites Neil, Symon and Bruce are mentioned, Suzy and Charles return to the programme and tributes to the lovely Nick, Lynn and of course Michael Apted.

One thing I find frustrating about this show is how little Neil has talked about his background and his relationships. Regarding his family, I wonder what kind of people (possibly) turn their backs on their adult child as they may have done in his 20s and to some extent 30s? He was homeless for a long time and clearly struggling with his mental health. Maybe my hunch is wrong, though. We’ll probably never know one way or another.

I binged watched the whole thing over the past couple of weeks
Little neil was adorable and very cute with his skipping at 14 he was very awkward and serious but that could just be him being a teenager
They touched on his mental health and i wouldnt be surprised if he had been diagnosed with Bi polar or schzophrenia
Both of which can become apparent in the late teens early 20s
He said at 28 i think peoole were concerned about his sanity
Im not sure his family did abandon him but they can only do so much
He seems to have found peace in his later life as a lay minister .

Speaking of university/teacher training college - Lynn went to grammar school and became a children’s librarian - it’s likely that in the 1970s she would have done further study, likely at a polytechnic, it’s a professional career.
That would perhaps fit in with her just starting out in the career when she was 21.
It never got mentioned though, if it was the case.

Shec.got married at 19 maybe she did Alevels and took a year or two off ?
What qualifications would she have needed to be a librarian in the 70s?

I think that’s a bit of a reach about their motives for most of them returning re Apted. Neil implied in an interview that money was a reason why he’s kept returning (and could be for others). He also wasn’t happy with how he was portrayed. Suzy said that Nick’s participation whilst he was dying forced her to “get a grip” to get involved in this series. I think the biggest factor is probably wanting to be part of TV history.

Yes, some of them have been very clear they did not "love" Michael Apted at all. John, for instance, has openly said he didn't like him, the feeling was mutual and I believe only returned to the series on the proviso that he wasn't interviewed by him but by the producer (Claire?) instead. Charles didn't like him at all, obviously, especially after he (apparently) yelled at him over the phone when he said he didn't want to be in 28 up and there was a lot of mutual sniping and even legal action ever since

Suzy hated being in the series but felt she should. Tony obviously thought a lot of him, Jackie saw him as someone annoying but who she loved. None of the others have as yet expressed an opinion afaik? I think they were mostly in it for the project rather than him personally.

I think that's right that many of them felt loyalty to the project but not necessary to MA. In 49up Suzy says that she will bow out when she turns 50 the following year. She then participates in 56up and says that she feels "ridiculously loyal to the project" (or words to that effect). She then sits out 63up before returning for 70up (and makes her comment in the press about getting a grip in light of Nick's contribution just before he died).

One of the many things that irritates me is the intro to the episodes where the children are at the adventure playground and there is the comment about the children from the childrens' home building houses, each child is intro'd by name until you get to "Jackie and her friends" - it's a small point but it seems to emphasise how unimportant MA thought the girls were!

You could definitely do a course at a Poly. I looked into doing one at Lewes in the 70s but didn't in the end. I think it was a degree but it was a long time ago so I could be wrong.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/09/2026 15:35

i dont spose she was a qualified librarian though?
did she die?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/09/2026 15:35

a librarian now needs a masters

She died very suddenly at 57( i think)
It wasent expected at all

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/09/2026 15:53

@TheSmellOfSea , that's next week isn't it? The next episode

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/09/2026 16:04

Being filmed do much must have made a difference to their lives, make them want to achieve something to show the camera

Watch 63 Up and they interview her husband Russ and her two daughters

They talked about her death.

Im guessing her extra veins in her head is Anatomical variations.

I watched 56 Up and on ITV X and it was edited at the end of Lynn’s piece that she died in May 2013. Must have put that on in preparation for 63 Up (might have been broadcasted a week before) and kept it in.

You can’t call yourself librarian without the professional qualification.
Why couldn’t she have been qualified?
Her two friends talked about her being much more career-minded - and she referred to herself later on (49 up, maybe?) as a “specialist”

I'm not sure, but Lynn did say in one of the earlier episodes that she'd originally wanted to be a teacher but didn't end up getting the qualification (no idea if she didn't get in or life got in the way - she had her girls in her late teens early 20s,didn't she, so I expect she had to drop the idea of college to bring up her babies). The series never says whether she had a qualification or not, but she didn't get a teaching one. She did, however, go to a grammar school, which the other two didn't.Sue, by choice, I think.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/09/2026 21:19

she had her first child at 19
there was never talk of her going to university
i think it would have been mentioned

Yeah. I don't think it was connected to the brain issues (although I did note she didn't look all that well at 56, looked quite a bit older than that - sorry, Lynn -, and had short hair suddenly, having had very long hair throughout the series, so perhaps something had happened previously connected with the vein issue, that was never discussed).

But her actual passing seems like it happened completely randomly, from a minor accident in the park with her grandson and then sudden sepsis. So upsetting for her family and so tragic, and it just goes to show. You don't know - these things could happen to any of us with a click of the fingers. Likewise Jackie's Ian and what happened to him. Poor guy was getting treated for stage 4 cancer, then he's just crossing the street and some idiot runs him over and he never recovers. Awful. 😪

I think so.

No, she never explicitly mentioned going to university, but she did mention she'd wanted to be a teacher but then hadn't. Obviously that would have required going to university, which she didn't do, for whatever reason - I'm sure she was smart enough, as the one who chose to go to grammar school and loved it. So something meant she didn't pursue that - I'd assume because she had a young family. Librarian meant she could still be involved with children's learning, even without quaifying as a teacher.

Awful. I'm so very sorry for your loss of your sister. 💐

Unfortunately, yes, as you say, sepsis can take over very quickly from something even relatively minor, quite suddenly and random, which is what happened to poor Lynn. Seems so unfair.
