I'm watching re-runs on YouTube! :)
I grew up in the 80s and watched every episode with my mum 😇❤️

The other characters in C&L were great too. The captain and Hisbecky(?). He was a real womaniser but later fell for a real nerdy type completely head over heels.

I loved that one of the detectives in more modern US comedy Brooklyn 99 called his twin daughters Cagney and Lacey!!!

🤣

Yes!
At the time it was quite unusual to have a police show lead by two women. Because the writers didn't want anyone to think C&L were lesbian, they wrote the character of Harvey. It just shows you how times have changed.
Fortunately.

Isbecki - he was partnered with Petrie, who was a bit more sensitive. I remember C&L became friendly with his wife. Petrie was always respectful of the women and their expertise

I was only at primary school when it aired and can't remember ever watching a single episode yet as soon as I saw this thread title I could hum the entire opening theme tune.

I’m like this with ‘Dallas’. The theme tune was always playing when I went to or came home from Brownies. Can’t remember which. My mother used to wind us up by doing a little dance to the theme tune. Drove me mad. In later years, she did the same to the Perry Mason film theme tune. Ah happy days ! 🤣

Loved Cagney and Lacey also have lovely memories of me and my sister watching it with my mum after my brother's went to bed. Felt so grown up. BBC 2 had afternoon reruns about 10/ 15 years ago, it coincided with me being on maternity leave so sat feeding my newborn watching it.

I watched Frasier and The Golden Girls on repeat when I had a newborn. I have lovely memories of spending long mornings in bed watching tv while the baby slept beside me.

The Golden Girls! If single in my golden years ( gawd I’m probably there already) I fantasise about living with friends in a Florida villa … or maybe on one of those senior living gated golf resorts spending all day slightly sozzled, playing shuffle board and driving round in a golf cart. Wouldn’t suit everyone….

The Golden Girls was also groundbreaking. It showed older women in a different light. Plus it was very funny. I love Rose's stories about St Olaf. The ones involving herring, especially!

I want to wear brightly coloured seperates and mules. Call everyone "honey" and eat cheesecake and ice cream with my roomies.

EvelynBeatrice · 19/03/2026 19:54

@LilyAnn13 well if we’re both single in the future ….
Reminds me of great quote from Sofia in the GG when they were speculating to Dorothy’s consternation about Dorothy switching to women ..”Don’t do it Dorothy! At your age, stick to what you know! “😁

My mum used to always used to say " im watching my programme tonight Cagney and Lacey " and get settled in front of the TV and be fast asleep by the end of the opening music 😁

Craftycorvid · 19/03/2026 22:56

Brilliant TV! Strong female leads who were portrayed as colleagues and buddies. Takes me back to my teens to recall the theme music.

ExBert80 · 19/03/2026 22:57

The acting in Cagney & Lacey was the best. I loved that show. Cagney’s slide into alcoholism was so well played. Sharon Gless always came across as a lovely woman in interviews.

It was so ahead of its time highlighting women’s issues through their two very different perspectives and living situations. The spats between them, and how they were resolved, managed to encapsulate these polar opposite positions.

I think Lacey was one of the first characters we saw on tv juggling her career with family life; she was out there on the NY streets wielding a gun by day, and worrying about the pot roast for her children at night.

And Christine was unusual in that she wasn’t looking to settle down and was one of the first characters we saw who was a truly liberated woman.

And yet both of them remained completely relatable and funny.

They just don’t make them like that any more!

Villanousvillans · 19/03/2026 23:20

I loved this show, especially the opening and the music.

Some of the American shows from back then had amazing theme tunes. The Rockford Files is another one.
