https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-15628823/Nadiya-Hussain-attack-BBC-cancelled-difficult-conversations.html

I think this woman needs her to realise her star has fallen like a lot of minor celebs. She has had a good run and everything has did was tired. New cookery blood should be allowed a chance.

I thinks it's undignified to start accusing her erstwhile employers of racism.

Nadiya Hussain launches another blistering attack on the BBC

Nadiya Hussain has launched another blistering attack on the BBC after previously claiming she'd been axed due to racism in the 'broken' TV industry.

While I don't disagree with you about the fact that it may just be that her TV career has run its course your argument about an Islamic cookbook having less appeal because less than 10% of the population is Muslim is ridiculous!

It was a lifestyle recipe book focussing on Ramadan and Eid, the importance of fasting and how eating together to break fast is an important family event for her with the recipes in there as an anchor.

Many many high profile chefs have brought out similar lifestyle / journey type cookbooks - Nigel Slater, Rick Stein, Jamie Oliver etc and their audiences are wider than people from their own backgrounds.

Do you think Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi made a mistake in bringing out Jerusalem which focussed on Jewish and Muslim dishes from the city? By your argument it was a marketing mistake given that such a small percentage of the country is either muslim or jewish - but given it sold thousands of copies in the UK and didn't do his career any harm, that argument isn't really one that stands up to scrutiny (his latest book is currently ranked number 5 in Food Reference and Gastronomy).

Islamic recipes tend to be made up of Middle Eastern, Persian and Indian cuisine - and those sort of cookbooks are incredibly popular - as of today, 5 of the top 10 best sellers in national and international cookery on Amazon feature cook books related to Middle Eastern, Persian or Asian recipes including The Ramadan Kitchen.

Nadiya lost her deals the day she announced the book - it hadn't even been published, so there was no way of knowing whether there was an issue with the marketing or how popular it would be.

So given other lifestyle cook books based on ethnic cuisine do very well and she lost the deals before her book was even published, then there is clearly something else at play - the most obvious thing would be a combination of sexism and anti-muslim sentiment.

Edited

I'd strongly disagree there's something else at play

Publishers would be tracking sales on previous books - they probably weren't great. If they were Nadiya could write a book about recipes to make on the moon and they'd publish it. It's all about numbers.

Nadiya's recipes were downright horrible in many cases, I remember one using old banana skins.

Sami Tamimi and Yotam Ottolenghi are amazing cooks and writers, whose dishes appeal to a huge demographic. Nadiya was a competent baker who won a competion with a blue cake iirc. As I said previously all the Bake Off winners have had short careers - hers was longer than most.

Everyone in TV knows that they have a short window in which they can make it, anyone who wants to survive works themselves into the ground to do so - they also diversify, do more than what they were first known for to keep themselves relevant, but it's relentless.

I always liked Nadiya but never cooked a thing of hers, as it's all very sugar-y and carb-y.

I suspect interest in all that is waning in this post-Mounjaro world.

She always seemed lovely though!

It's interesting. Chocolate sales (BBC article this week that mentions it) are down massively and a friend who works in ultra processed food and says that jabs are very much starting to hit sales and that the jabs are a disaster for the industry - says it's a bit like the end of cigarettes and that's how they expect sales to go.

So yeah if you are a cake baker then actually you might expect demand for sweet treats cook books to go down whilst demand for low calorie healthy but full of flavour food cook books to go up.

In terms of market trends GBBO is now getting old and has been shunted off to C4. A lot of people who watched on the BBC didn't make the switch. So again that's going to impact her saleability.

DH loves to watch the Cook channel. There's an Irish cook he likes and the American pioneer woman

Flowersforyourchocolateprettyplease · 10/03/2026 16:04

I liked Nadia, but the entitlement is off putting.

She'd had 10 good years, yet doesn't want to make way for others.

With 10 years knowledge, exposure and talent, she could have set up her own company and actually employ even more people.

You can't expect a job for life.

They could have given a job to each winner for a year each, but she got the longest run, yet it still wasn't enough for her.

justasking111 · 10/03/2026 16:04

I recall Ken Hom the sales of woks went through the roof, everyone was stir frying.

Nowadays my youngest is a sushi fan. He has the full set of knives and enjoys creating beautiful plates of sushi.

I've no time for her because of the entitlement. It's off the scale here.

GBBO didn't get "shunted off" - C4 bought the format at the height of its popularity

That makes sense.

I noticed as well on her Instagram that she has a range of cakes out at Tesco. First I'd heard of it, and I do buy occasion cakes from there sometimes so would be the target demographic.

Love The Pioneer Woman, i also hadn't thought about the impact of WLI on certain shows or cooking but that is a good point

crumpet · 10/03/2026 16:14

I don’t really watch cooking shows and don’t think I saw any of Nadiyas so can’t comment on their quality of her recipes. But tv is a business - if the viewing figures were stellar then she wouldn’t have been dropped.

Do you mean Stacey Solomon? I love Sort Your Life Out!

SYLO new series starts tonight! (Or maybe tomorrow night)

Really? I only started watching it when it went to C4. But that's because I don't like Sue Perkins as she was vile to my other half.

AmandaBrotzman · 10/03/2026 07:47

What the fuck is Islamic cuisine?

Not much different from Middle East cooking with variants from different areas I guess?

RanyaJerodung · 10/03/2026 16:24

I watched it on BBC and then C4. I'm not going to watch it anymore though because I really don't like Nigella Lawson.

It dropped some viewing figures but saying everyone is a massive exaggeration, it’s still one of the biggest shows on the channel and times have changed a lot gor terrestrial TV in the meantime.

Almost 7 million for the last series. That's still really good these days.

Flowersforyourchocolateprettyplease · 10/03/2026 17:44

I also liked Ching-He Huang, but most of us can't cook a great Chinese meal at home, so although I enjoyed watching her, I never bought any of her books.

Same as Lorraine Pascale, lovely but never bought anything of hers.

Gennaro Contaldo is another whose star waned although still active.

Nadiya should have let her actions speak more. Start the production company, employ people and live her life.
However, I dont think she has a business mind, hence not diversifying whilst at the BBC.

If contracts stopped her, she could have had a plan in place for when needed.

Poor previous book sales is a perfectly valid argument - but the poster I was responding to didn't use that argument - they specifically said it was because a Muslim Cookbook would have less appeal.

I mean it might have less appeal - but not because that type of cooking is only eaten by Muslims.

Regardless, it's still the timing that is off. The brands she had her deals with would have known about previous book sales for a long time.

Its a bit of a strange co-incidence that three of them make the decision to drop her the day she publicly announces her new book that happens to specifically reference Islam.

Unfortunately we will never know if she would still have been dropped if her book had simply be a mix of middle Eastern and Indian recipes and hadn't mentioned Islam or Ramadan.

There many routes to being a celebrity chef, not just bake off.

Just because she is the most successful bake off contestant doesn't mean she is should be grateful for whatever she gets.

Erm. That's not really the point! It's not about grateful or ungrateful. The point is that there have been c200 Bake Off contestants in the show's history and the BBC have only given one a 10 year career with them - Nadia. How can it possibly be racist/sexist if they have overlooked every single contestant other than a black woman?

You've just named 2! Plus Stacey Solomon, Alison Hammond.

Nadiya won a competition based on actual skill not just being on TV, and she's continued using that skill.

I think she has considerable appeal as an individual but her recipes are often a bit bonkers or use a lot of UPF (i recall a mac + cheese recipe that included cheese doritos blended into the sauce) which isn't on trend right now.

Reality show winners / runners up with long careers?

If we are not sticking to the UK, American Idol has produced a ton:

Kelly Clarkson (won 2002)
Jennifer Hudson (contestants in 2004)
Adam Lambert (runner up 2009)
Benson Boone (finalist 2021) - early days but not likely to go anywhere soon.

Beyonce, Nicole Scherzinger, Cardi B, Carrie Underwood were all reality show contestants, Christiano Siriano did very well off the back of project runway, Emma Stone won a VH1 talent search competiton

Jamie Laing from Made in Chelsea has made millions off Candy Kittens, Harry Styles, Susan Boyle, Jane McDonald, Alison Hammond, Lee Mead .....

There's bloody 100's of people who got there shot through relaity TV or TV talent contests that have gone on to be highly successful household names.
