I think this woman needs her to realise her star has fallen like a lot of minor celebs. She has had a good run and everything has did was tired. New cookery blood should be allowed a chance.

I thinks it's undignified to start accusing her erstwhile employers of racism.

Nadiya Hussain launches another blistering attack on the BBC

Nadiya Hussain has launched another blistering attack on the BBC after previously claiming she'd been axed due to racism in the 'broken' TV industry.

Prob of zero interest, but, I haven’t a clue who this person is.

Sorry who are you and why are you here?

SarahAndQuack · 10/03/2026 10:48

I don't really get this.

They didn't ask for participants to write their names on a list and then put a pin in it. She entered a competition, at a time when it was pretty hard to even get into that competition. And then she won.

I'm sure there's an element of luck; there is with most things in life. But she obviously worked hard during that competition and afterwards, so why do you think she has a duty to soft-soap the BBC if she genuinely feels that their treatment of her was racist?

Should the women on Masterchef who got harrassed by Wallace also put up and shut up, because they were lucky enough to have had the chance to be on TV?

No. They shouldn’t put up and shut up because they were sexually harassed/assaulted (I’m unsure of the correct terms for what happened) by someone who refuses to take responsibility for his own actions. Nadiya has had a wonderful career slow down on one specific network. She could go to another, she could start a YouTube channel (if she hasn’t already), she could build brand deals with 100’s of companies who take far less talented people than her!
Your comparison is completely deranged.

Agree she must have made good money.

But I do think people who say she's just a self-taught cook done good are being sexist.

No one tells Heston Blumenthal and Raymond Blanc that they got a lucky break, even though they are also self taught cooks.

Heston isnt that comparable to others though, he taught himself via the French way

Raymond Blanc was absolutely taught.

Figcherry · 10/03/2026 10:53

@ProfessionalPirate Jamie Oliver's qualifications consist of an NVQ in Home Economics.
I believe his training was gained working for chefs in well known restaurant kitchens.
I assume thats how most chefs learn.

JO was notably dropped by the BBC after only 3 years for appearing on a Sainsbury's advertisement.
Nadiya has had a better run with the beeb in comparison.

Coffeeishot · 10/03/2026 07:28

Oh I dunno i think she is probably right, a woman of colour and a Muslim not conforming to Bbc "beauty: standard is racist and sexist.

Edited

Name another bake off contestant that has been given the same opportunity that she has.

I have no doubt that sexism and racism is present in every day life but it does seem a stretch to claim it on this occasion when no other person, with her background as a Bake Off contestant, has ever been given the same opportunity.

Raymond Blanc says he is entirely self-taught. As is Heston.

But when a woman does it, it's not comparable eh.

Thephantom · 10/03/2026 10:56

I agree with you OP. Not sure what she's done with all the money she's earned from her BBC contracts. She's had such a good run. She shouldnt expect the colour of her skin or religion to give her a free pass to never ending stardom. She, (like everyone else in TV )should know that once your popularity and ratings drop, that's the end of her TV career, and she should have planned for this. She's being disingenuous - she only has herself to blame if she's not planned for her TV career ending.

Whatarewedoing · 10/03/2026 10:56

Controversially, I think she got to where she is because she is an attractive Muslim woman of colour and it was a novelty to see her demographic on TV at the time. I liked her on GB bake off, not followed her since. I'm not convinced she showed significantly more talent than other winners and I think it is ridiculous to compare her to trained chefs. She benefited from a) being different and seen as the under dog and b) from being very attractive. What does annoy me more is that the women celeb chefs who do make it are often very attractive. Average would be nice too once in a while. I think her comments about being told how to wear her headscarf and what lipstick prove that point. Women have to be attractive - men can be average.

There many routes to being a celebrity chef, not just bake off.

Just because she is the most successful bake off contestant doesn't mean she is should be grateful for whatever she gets.

Heston started an apprenticeship with Blanc but dropped out. Spent ten years in non-food jobs while all the time learning about food. Then he bought a run down pub which when it started was just him and a dishwasher. He nearly went bankrupt. But he preserved and The Fat Duck became what it is. He's got Michelin stars.

To bracket him with Nadiya would be ludicrous. Self taught, yes, but worlds apart.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 10/03/2026 10:57

MissAustenMadeAQuilt · 10/03/2026 10:17

You are absolutely right. She was treated much better than most-if not all-other winners of a cookery competition.

The spectacle of her trying to say that her 10 year run has come to an end because of racism is laughable. I would say she benefitted from positive discrimination.

If she is able to give examples of previous winners of Bake Off that have done better than her, had a better run, then let her come forward and point to them.

What's that, Nadyia, you can't find any.......shut up then.

Let me guess, you're not a person of colour or Muslim. I posit you support Reform too.

ChamonixMountainBum · 10/03/2026 10:58

ProfessionalPirate · 10/03/2026 10:42

Ah apologies I see he did start off working in restaurants. I don’t consider him in the same league as the other chefs mentioned though. He’s certainly never opened a decent restaurant of his own.

Despite learning his craft in a very good restaurant he gets a lot of snobby grief from other chefs for not being classically trained in a michelin starred kitchen in Paris or similar and his cook books are derided as being too simple but I respect the guy even if his mockney faux geezer persona was a bit grating. I think he did a good job of making cooking a bit more accessible by simplifying complex dishes and you cant really begrudge his campaigning zeal.

MajorProcrastination · 10/03/2026 10:58

Let her call them out! Don't want to be called out for this kind of thing? Don't treat people poorly. Let her burn those bridges. She doesn't owe them silence. Whistleblow the heck out of inequitable employers! As another poster said, TV is a fickle industry but it sounds like they've managed this whole thing horribly and they deserve to be put on blast for that. Good for her.

Heston is yes

He taught himself the techniques that all top chefs, professional chefs learn. She is a baker who also does recipes. She's great but I dont know why you're straining to compare her to Micheln starred chefs

Raymond Blanc was taught and trained in his restaurants. He may term that 'self taught' and it might be in cheffy language if there isnt a training college in there along the way but he was definitely taught by the myriad of chefs he worked under.

She's only 41, of course she can still have her career.

Why aren't you asking what all the white chefs have done their with their money?

Bruisername · 10/03/2026 10:59

I think there is a difference between being a restaurant chef and a home cook. I don’t think one is better than the other - just different.

my mil is of the opinion that the word chef was taken by men who wanted to dissociate from the (mainly) women who do the lions share of cooking which was obviously beneath them! It’s kind of like on here when the DH makes a big thing out of cooking and needing time and no disturbance to create a culinary masterpiece

Mangelwurzelfortea · 10/03/2026 10:26

Why do you think she's come to the end of her TV career after 10 years and yet someone like Rick Stein - with his dull voice, boring recipes and zero personality - has been on BBC cooking shows for decades. I wonder why he gets longevity and she doesn't? What could it possibly be?

People watch him, I imagine. The same way they must have been watching Nadiya all these years. I've never had any interest in her, but I believe she had her fans. It must be the same for Rick Stein.

The BBC is a money making operation. I don't really believe it's racism that saw her let go. More likely that a relationship which was mutually beneficial for years has stopped bringing in the cash like it used to.

I think that’s such a good point. When talking about sexism in cookery shows there is an issue with valuing attractiveness in women but it’s irrelevant for men and just about their cooking.

Very interestingly Mary Berry would always correct people, I think I saw her get a bit sharp with Paul Hollywood once, who said she was a chef, she said 'no Im a home cook'

Im not sure what the difference is unless its that a chef cooks in a restaurant or for people who arent your family/friends

I would make an excellent chef but thats just in my own domain!! Self taught of course!

Alltheprettyseahorses · 10/03/2026 11:02

I don't know how she won Bake Off, never mind has a 10 year career as a telly chef sticking wotsits in macaroni cheese. That cake for the queen was an embarrassment. Her griping over the end of a very successful career is so entitled. She should be grateful for what she got. Nigella hasn't had a series for years AFAIK but I guarantee she wouldn't be sniping at everyone.

AnnaMagnani · 10/03/2026 11:02

So I went and looked at her Instagram and...

Was surprised to learn that despite her despair at the BBC having wrecked her career, she actually has a new book out, was on the front cover of Woman & Home, has been on the One Show and Woman's Hour all in the last month.

Her new book is Quick Comforts - I think this is actually a bigger issue as she is very much in the comfort eating, baking zone and so many people are on weight loss injections now. I'm not cooking something I can't eat.

Although the Two Fat Ladies were very successful (they chose their show title) and weren't scrapped; one of them died. Attractiveness didn't come into that. They were superbly watchable for being amusing, characterful, and different.

'Deranged'? Goodness.

The point is that Nadiya has said that she feels she was on the receiving end of racist discrimination.

These women have said they feel they were on the receiving end of sexist harrassment.

Sadly, it appears they were right. Why would we automatically assume Nadiya can't be right too?

Both she and they 'could have' gone on to other things, of course! Silly women! Forget about what's happened, put up and shut up - is that it?

Personally, I think anyone has a right to raise a complaint if they think they've been discriminated against, and if someone with a platform does it, in a way that might help others who would find it harder to speak out, I say good on them.
