I wasn’t paying much attention. What happened?

I liked being part of the EU, the only thing I wasn’t keen on was the euro. But I can’t articulate why.

10 countries joined in 2004 and 2 more in 2007 - too many, too quickly. I suspect quite a few people voted for Brexit because they felt like their towns were being 'taken over' by Eastern Europeans.

Ah ok. Yes that makes sense.

10 is a lot!

No I wasn't either and I really wondered about it for a while. I usually like Ian Hislop. The one thing we can always hold up Charles Kennedy positively for is that he was the ONLY person who stood against the Iraq war and pointed out it was massively illegal. Right from the start.

Brown was solid, he was arguably unyielding, but he had his eye on the public purse. He was also a proper politician - not for show or gloss - never did or said anything that he didn't stand by later.

Well the Tories are the Tories - they switch and bait - look how many have defected because they see their gravy train coming to an end!

Charles Kennedy was definitely not the only person opposed to the Iraq War. A list - Diane Abbott, Graham Allen, John Austin, Tam Dalyell, Glenda Jackson, Peter Kilfoyle, Mark Fisher,.Charles Kennedy (Leader), Norman Baker, Tom Brake, Colin Breed, Paul Burstow, Vincent Cable, Nick Clegg, Kenneth Clarke, John Gummer, Peter Ainsworth, Richard Bacon, Tony Baldry. Alex Salmond (SNP), Angus Robertson (SNP), Elfyn Llwyd (PC), Adam Price (PC), Eddie McGrady (SDLP)

FleurDeFleur · 19/02/2026 15:41

People knew about Charles Kennedy, yet continued to support him, which I find strange.

It was a massive mistake to enlarge the EU - that's what caused Brexit. I'm not sure things would have panned out much differently if we hadn't joined the US in Iraq. I think the US would have gone in anyway. 7/7 might not have happened, though.

Agree completely with all of this. And the US made it clear that they would go it alone, with or without allies.

NewspaperTaxis · 19/02/2026 17:39

Someone said that Blair was the kind of guy who always wanted to be at the right parties, he had to be at the top table - hence he wanted to get in with the US. And also, I think, he thought it would be straightforward and relatively easy, rather than the shambles it turned out to be.

He had the whip hand having taken his party to victory twice having had Labour in the wilderness for so long. That, and there was the aura of a cult about him. It has never really dissipated, that sense the if the State says it is so, then it is so. The truth is what they say it is. Onwards and upwards!

He bangs on about how history will judge - words from someone who wants to delay judgement as long as he can. I have to say in those clips he looks smart but out of his depth, as most would be under those circumstances - but until then his career had moved forward without setbacks of any major kind, so he probably figured he'd got this.

On a facile note, his hair receded very oddly and suddenly it seemed - guess he's had a hair transplant since.

FleurDeFleur · 19/02/2026 17:52

That's not really what I got from the programme, but maybe you did, @NewspaperTaxis . He knew that the US were going to take action and he thought that the UK could be, if not a moderating force, certainly a supporter of not taking broader or more extreme action.
If Blair wanted to be at the top table, I don't think that's a bad ambition for a UK Prime Minister, to have a say, to have a place for the nation in global affairs.
He never said that history would judge him - did I miss that? He said that he believed it to be the right course of action at the time.

NewspaperTaxis · 19/02/2026 17:58

The interviewer brought up the history will be your judge quote rather than Blair but I think Blair nodded along - he's used that line himself in the past however.

That post came from my views more at the time, not really the programme.

Aha i am a little embarrassed that I learned loads from the doc so far - as I turned 18 for the Cameron/Clegg/Brown election, that’s where my knowledge starts from 😂 (bar the ww2 years and some of Thatchers reign)

No need to be embarrassed. I have whole chunks missing where life gets in the way.

Don’t be. That’s how we learn, I lived through it and had forgotten a lot!

mumofoneAloneandwell · 19/02/2026 19:51

thank you both 🙂

I will say though that I am 99% sure that I met farage! He told me off for not voting ukip!

Certainly no need to be embarrassed, OP. I don't suppose many of us know that much about the politicians who were in power when we were children.

And lots of people wouldn't even be interested in learning!

dapsnotplimsolls · 19/02/2026 20:10

I honestly don't remember Blair trying to get us to join the Euro.

DisappearingGirl · 19/02/2026 20:21

This thread just keeps making me think of Reeves and Mortimer - if anyone mentions Robin Cooke now I think of this

Yes, I do. That's why UKIP used the £ sign in their logo. They didn't want it to happen
Blair was a strong Europhile and wanted as much connection as possible. He also believed that it would revive manufacturing and help exports.
There was going to be a plan to join the Euro, but the conditions were never quite right, then it got abandoned.

I also stopped watching/ consuming any news after 9/11. For almost a decade! I found it too distressing.
started again during the MPs expenses scandal

Don't be embarrassed lovely, you can't know everything about stuff that happened before your time or when you were too young to be aware.

I hope those of us who are *marginally older haven't scarred you with all the talk of football shirts and tight blue underpants!

dapsnotplimsolls · 19/02/2026 20:59

I'm looking forward to part 3. I wonder if he's going to claim that Brown stabbed him in the back?

No, he doesn't really get nasty or personal in that way.
