I am old enough to be their mothers. 🤦‍♀️

Simonjt · 08/02/2026 20:59

I thought this was quite a good review of the experience of watching the series.

”This is just going to be my ramblings as a 44 year old gay man who was closeted until I was 21- and I'm curious if other members of the LBGTQ community had similar feelings? I loved the show and it has stayed with me since the first watch. It's uncovered memories and feelings I've hidden and am ultimately left with grief.

I realize now rather than I felt like I was born
"wrong"- like straight was the default and I was born "wrong." And I see how my natural being was fucked with from the very beginning. Things as broad as "boys don't cry" to narrow as not being allowed to learn how to sew bc that's something boys don't do.

And omg the scene with Scott and Kip and Kips "sexy lumberjack" comment as a sign to Scott "HEY IM GAY" and seeing Scott's initial hesitation and seeing that hesitation cause initial panic in Kip- so well done. Been there so many times. For us millennials before social media we had to rely on these cues to find one another while trying to avoid danger.

And I know it's been said before- but the 4 queer characters- watching their
expressions... it's gold. I felt the fear and panic in Shane and Scott whenever any conversation got close to talking about gayness. It reminded me of being young and having a relative ask me if I had a girlfriend yet. And I can't sit through the Shane/Rose scene without crying. It was so well done.

And so when I see straight reactors seeing this just as a romance or even dismissing the first two episodes as pornographic, it makes me angry.”

Fatrascal27 · 08/02/2026 21:07

Interesting take.

I definitely think it handled their feelings well.

Rousillon849 · 08/02/2026 21:09

Would anybody else's Google searches make the most jaded 19th century Parisian courtesan blush? I was just saying to a friend - I really think I've lost my mind.

I have no shame. Big reader of fan fiction back in the day. I have a 100 reasons why it’s ok to like this show but the main one is it’s nice. We’re allowed nice things.

That's a good take on it. I think what struck me about it is that, as a straight white middle class woman, I have been entirely sheltered from struggles that others face. It makes me angry that this happens and HR shows a very real and emotional response to these issues.
I also love that it doesn't conform to the stereotyping of the queer community and instead focuses on the narrative of love as being the central theme

Fatrascal27 · 09/02/2026 06:55

I think it’s a good intro to all of that struggle. . The books is obviously written by a woman but the show is written and directed by a gay man and that’s really important.

I am surprised that so many women are surprised by how hot they find it. That’s a nice bit of self discovery. Also I have seen elsewhere some viewers who have clearly been unaware how men have sex. The show is not explicit in that way but we see a number of sexual acts implied. It seems to be an education for some!

I have also seen women having conversations with themselves and others about their own sexuality. It’s starting conversations.

Female Desire in the entertainment industry is the main topic on today’s The Rest is Entertainment podcast, lots of reference to HR.

ooh great. Will give it a listen.

QueenMabby · 10/02/2026 13:38

I’m a lost cause. I now have an AO3 account and the HR album in my photos has over 100 pictures saved. 😳

Fatrascal27 · 10/02/2026 19:01

I dare not go down AO3 route again. However my HR phone folder has some lovely photos and videos.

Rousillon849 · 11/02/2026 18:21

Neither dare I, @Fatrascal27. This feels so intense I know I need to ne careful lest I spiral. Also, I feel there is already so much content out there to keep me going. Won't read The Long Game yet.

The most recent Loon Call podcast has a great interview with Jacob and Brendan which has the added bonus of illuminating beyond doubt, for anyone who's still unsure, what exactly is going on in the knees-up scene in episode 2. There appears to have been some debate previously about this, as well as about Shane's little Vegas show, and the post-tuna melt sofa scene. I love what Jacob had to say about male gay sex as imagined by Rachel, a woman.

@QueenMabby, I am enjoying Tonsil Hockey despite disliking Catherine Bohart more with every episode. She comes across as ungenerous, egocentric and bitchy. Is it just me?

Rousillon849 · 11/02/2026 18:25

I just logged on to the iPlayer to very reluctantly catch up on Industry (did I say I'm obsessed with Heated Rivalry?) and its first offering was the olympics men's ice hockey, so I've been derailed yet again...

Rousillon849 · 11/02/2026 18:26

Oh and last thing: someone who is possibly on this thread recommended Young Royals to me, and Jacob cites it as an influence in that same Loon Call podcast.

FurForksSake · 11/02/2026 18:29

@Rousillon849 Jacob has definitely made some very good changes and improvements. And yes, I found that really interesting what he was saying about her writing of the sex scenes and preconceptions. I think gay sex used to be depicted in one way and people may have just assumed that was it.

Fatrascal27 · 11/02/2026 18:41

It’s so obvious to me what is going on in the scenes but as I say I’ve read alot of fan fic in the past and know a lot of gay men!

the men’s ice hockey at the Olympics….its good to watch but now I find it all very sexy because Heated Rivalry!

I loved Jacob’s interview. He gives no fucks. I have seen Young Royals and liked it.

Fatrascal27 · 12/02/2026 04:30

Do straight men find this hot to watch I wonder?

Too many to link but authors I like are:
Gurlsrool
Pucksandpower
jsMika2
Broccolicheddarchicken

There are many more!
I’ve just worked out how to send fanfics to my kindle so I may never read a real book again!

Fatrascal27 · 12/02/2026 09:03

Do not tempt me back into AO3!!!!! My poor middle aged brain is already full.

Ecrire · 12/02/2026 11:06

Absolutely loved Young Royals. Shamelessly admiring Edvin Ryding

The jocks on Empty Netters LAPPED IT UP. Particularly one of them. Or did a very convincing job of pretending.

oh it was pretending, at least one of them has been very homophobic about the series

Rousillon849 · 12/02/2026 16:29

I have heard about the comments made, and also that they were made before watching started. I do not believe they were all pretending and/or homophobic, and happy to disagree on this.

Rousillon849 · 12/02/2026 16:34

@tennissquare I have listened to TRIE and really enjoyed the discussion. I'm a big fan and member of the podcast and normally listen to it religiously - you can actually track the beginning of my obsession with HR from the number of episodes I'm behind on. I essentially pretty much dropped everything that's not HR since they covered it on their Q&A episode a few weeks back. This is all Marina's fault 😄.
