Took me a while to warm to Shane. I think the gay porn thing is valid but it is quite romantic as it goes on. It’s fan fiction ultimately.

reluctantbrit · 13/01/2026 17:49

I personally don't see it as gay porn, the amount of spice in the first 2 episodes was a bit much but the actual scenes weren't more than what you see in Bridgerton.

Actually that’s true. If it were m/f no one would think much of it.

FurForksSake · 13/01/2026 20:40

I loved it, I have read a lot of mm ice hockey and I think I’ve read this, but they all blur… I’m considering a rewatch but will need to try and rewatch the whole thing so it goes off the planner!

im hoping this will open the door more fully for this type of series, smutty romance for the win!

Fatrascal27 · 13/01/2026 21:28

Why is ice hockey so popular though?

Well, it's one of the most popular sports in the world 🤷‍♀️ certainly in the US/Canada where the series is playing. In Russia, it's THEE most popular sport and the men's ice hockey Olympic Gold the most important medal 🥇

Fatrascal27 · 13/01/2026 22:06

I didn’t know that. Interesting.

Clefable · 13/01/2026 22:10

It’s a great sport, I’ve been a fan for 30 years and seen several NHL games live. Fast-paced, great, safe community (you can sit as an away fan in a bunch of home fans and just get some good-natured banter), just really fun to watch. Hugely popular in the states, Canada and Nordic countries. Plenty of teams here in the UK too!

It's also a sport plenty of women watch and are fans. And plenty of MM hockey romance writers are women, you can see in their writing how well they know the game.

Yes, and I became obsessed with noticing the clever camera angles and use of bed clothes to hide the naughty bits.

Is that because there are mo openly gay players in the NHL that women make up pervy fantasies about them?

Fatrascal27 · 14/01/2026 09:51

I have to say I have genuinely become more interested in ice hockey!

GlosGirl82 · 14/01/2026 13:50

Have just binged - one of the best things I have watched.. ever… ep5&6 made me cry

Fatrascal27 · 14/01/2026 14:28

Yes! Both episodes were so emotional. It’s really well acted.

XelaM · 14/01/2026 14:43

I mean it was all quite predictable though. Hardly earth-shattering TV.

The Russian bits were well-done, but it was a bit odd Rozanov had a black girlfriend in Russia and no one mentioned it because it's not something that would normally go unnoticed in Russia...

Simonjt · 14/01/2026 14:43

We’re going to start this tonight, I spent a lot of my older childhood in Nottingham so we often went to watch the panthers, and my husband grew up supporting Djurgärdens IF.

Fatrascal27 · 14/01/2026 15:46

I don’t think anyone says it’s earth shattering TV but it’s a bit of an emotional ride. For anyone that likes fan fiction or MM romance books, this is perfect. I just think people want a bit of positivity and warmth. The world is shit. A few hours escapism with hot gay hockey players is obviously hitting the spot for a lot of people.

Fatrascal27 · 14/01/2026 16:01

Actually I think it might be a bit groundbreaking. Not many TV shows centre a gay romance like that. And shows the sex as explicitly as that.

This. Noone raises the eyebrows on a Hallmark story, smut period dramas or series like Virgin River which is a MF romance series adapted for Netflix.

Noone says anything if the male lead is a well build guy but suddenly two guys is a big thing.

Spot on. This is high quality entertainment. I don't read any romance books, but I did like this series. It was sexy and fun.

I also do not agree it's porn. The series catches those two when they are in their late teens/early 20s, the prime time for having casual sex, especially among gay guys. I think the amount of sex in the initial episodes reflects the type of relationship they had initially, which was a series of hook ups, that progressed to something else later.

beasmithwentworth · 15/01/2026 12:04

@XelaM I have zero Russian connection but I was so impressed with his accent/ demeanour/ Russian speaking I asked DD if we knew any Russian people to ask them if it was as impressive to a native speaker as it sounded to me. The scene where he is back in Russia speaking to Shane on the phone was particularly moving.

I got through the first 3 episodes fairly unmoved as it seemed quite shallow and repetitive (and that’s when adult Dd gave up) but I carried on and that’s where it really changed for me. It had depth/ emotion/ a storyline. I didn’t think during the first 3 episodes that I would be in tears at the last one!

I was also a huge ice hockey fan as a teen and used to go and watch my local team (Solihull Barons!) every home match. It’s inspired me to get into it again. I’m glad I stuck with it and really loved Rozanov’s character as it developed. Plus he’s rather nice to look at too 😊

afaloren · 15/01/2026 12:15

I have a dear friend who is Russian (doesn’t live there anymore) who says the Russian was spot on. I’m glad because it would have ruined it for Russian people watching.

Apparently it’s also very popular in China! Though not on any of their official channels. I think it’s really important to see these kinds of stories!

XelaM · 15/01/2026 12:29

@beasmithwentworth and @afaloren Yes, the Russian dialogue was spot-on and his accent good, although obviously not perfect, but the dialogue itself must have been written by a native Russian, as it's very hard to emulate the way Russians speak to each other

Simonjt · 17/01/2026 17:12

We’ve watched the first three episodes so far, not read the books so no idea how ‘accurate’ they are.

Firstly its nice to see normal looking people, natural teeth, no botox or lip filler, stretch marks, no airbrushed flawless fake skin, normal bodies and a mum played by an age appropriate actress not someone five years older than their on stage child.

The subtle non-verbal communication is very good, like the tiny foot tap in the gym water bottle scene from Shane. Hudson portrays Shane failing to read body language very well (ASD?), some actors can really over do that.

I don’t see it as porny, you don’t see anything beyond the odd flash of bum, the sex scenes we’ve so far seen in three episodes do all carry a vital part of the story, especially love language and an inability to be intimate beyond sex and struggling with that. Illya is also the king of enthusiastic consent. The sex scenes were very realistic too, often on tv sex lasts 12 seconds and happens fully clothed and their genitals would need to be in a really weird place on their body. Plus its just dipicting normal sex, nothing swinging from the chandeliersy. The intimacy coordinator must be very good, they’ve certainly done their homework.

Its funny seeing the old mobile phones, seeing as phones then didn’t really have passcodes the characters were brave leaving them laying around.

Its very well produced considering how small the budget was, and the fact it was only filmed in about five weeks.

Some really good and realistic queer representation so far.

There are lots of sports people like both ilya and shane, and scott too. I know a few, and I know a few who had very very short professional careers as waiting to come out would be too long to wait after retirement. We’ve only just had an Australian footballer who was forced to leave his club after being bullied out by homophobic staff.

I've only heard about this today as Marina Hyde was discussing it on her podcast. DH is away for the weekend so looks like that's my Saturday night sorted.

I don't know anything about Hockey.
