I've never watched it . It's on most years so will record to my satellite box and give it ago sometime over the next few days .
Made in 1946 , and in b&w with James Stewart starring.
Is it worth watching ? Also whilst I've your attention what other classics usually on this time of year are worth considering ?
How about White Christmas if it's on ?
I have even watched Jason and the Argonauts a few times over the years . Yes I know that's not christmassy but in my defence it's usually on at this time of year.

I love it's a wonderful life, it's in my top 3 favourite Christmas movies. It is of its time, so you do need to treat it as such.

WinterBerry40 · 21/12/2025 12:06

I've just noticed High Society is currently on BBC2 made in 1956 but don't fancy that.

Ministerofmumbles · 21/12/2025 12:12

Personally, it’s the most depressing and thoroughly bleak film ever - I watched it in hopeful anticipation years ago and never again!

I love It's A Wonderful Life. Absolute Christmas classic.

High Society is very entertaining. It's got some great songs and a lot of humour.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 21/12/2025 12:27

It’s a fantastic film from beginning to end. Haven’t watched it this year, I’ve been saving it as it’s such a treat x

AdoreTheChaos · 21/12/2025 12:47

I can’t stand the whiney child “every time a bell rings….”

magicstar1 · 21/12/2025 12:49

It's my favourite Christmas movie and I go to see it in the cinema every year.

It's is quite sad and thought provoking, but also very uplifting. Give it a go and I hope you enjoy it.

TheAutumnCrow · 21/12/2025 12:54

I’m not a fan. I think it’s wildly overrated and the whole Clarence the Angel embodiment achieves the feat of being both dreary and nuts at the same time.

WearyAuldWumman · 21/12/2025 12:55

Yes, do watch it.

Also, if you've ever watched Gremlins, then a knowledge of It's a Wonderful Life makes Gremlins much more enjoyable.

Aparecium · 21/12/2025 12:59

I think IAWL is a very sweet, cosy film, albeit very dated. If I’m in a maudlin mood (or tipsy 😜) I cry at it. I’ll definitely record it.

As for White Christmas - meh. Like the singing and dancing, the rest is completely unmemorable.

SabreIsMyFave · 21/12/2025 12:59

This is a wonderful film, I watched it last week (got the DVD.) Smile

Oleaginus · 21/12/2025 13:04

What channel is it on?

SelfRaisingFlour · 21/12/2025 13:06

IAWL is a great film, but it's mostly sad until the end. Don't watch it expecting laughs. It's about a man who wants to kill himself!

IcedPurple · 21/12/2025 13:24

I usually have it on in the background while wrapping gifts and doing other last minute prep on Xmas Eve.

Agree with others that in many ways it's a very depressing film, despite the 'uplifiting' end. I guess an optimistic take is that it's about the simple but enduring joys of family, community and small town life. A more downbeat view is that it is the story of a man who had to sacrifice all his dreams for a boring, humdrum life in a two horse town. Both views are valid!

AgentPidge · 21/12/2025 13:32

I think it's a film you need to watch, because it's part of our shared culture. I watched it for the first time about two years ago, and I won't ever need to watch it again!

Don't write it off.
