The Christmas special of call the midwife is on bbc 1 in 2 parts again. The first part is on at 20:15 on Christmas day and the second part is on at 20:30 on boxing day. I am not a fan of the Christmas special been in 2 parts. I wonder how doctor Turner and his simpering wife will save the world.

The young man with rabies was so sad :(

I had that copy of the Elves and the Shoemaker. I think it might still be in my house somewhere actually. I read it to my own dc.

I loved Elves and the Shoemaker, esp the ladybird edition. Was that the one they used in this episode? I missed which one it was.
I was born end of 1971 and my mum was one of the first women at our local hospital to have an epidural with me.

What is it that Sister Veronica said to Trixie's brother prior to the phone call - I think during a walk in the park?

It's written by the wife of the actor who plays Dr Turner's isn't it?

I remember on a previous thread someone said Stephen McGann will probably turn up in the prequel playing Dr Turner's doctor father. 😭

Toddlerteaplease · 18/01/2026 23:55

How on earth does Dr T manage to get the hospital to make a huge change in practice, introduce it with no training and then deliver a baby in that hospital (he’s not a member of staff, so surely not allowed) in the space of a few days?

Lalgarh · 19/01/2026 01:14

Because Dr Turner

She told him she wanted a child of her own.

InMySpareTime · 19/01/2026 07:45

I don’t get why the woman was given an epidural rather than either the Nurse Crane “come on, lass” encouragement or the Dr Turner “patronising PTSD talk therapy” options.
While she was finding the prospect of birth scary and it triggered her PTSD from her mother’s death, she hasn’t dealt with those feelings.
Also, what was the point of Dr Turner at the shoulder birth? By the time he stopped listing rabies symptoms the birth was over, and Sr Julienne has done hundreds of trickier births than that. It annoys me that Dr Turner keeps getting called in for births that midwives could previously handle perfectly well.

HollyhockDays · 19/01/2026 07:52

Do they know Trixie’s brother is gay?

I was TERRIFIED of rabies as a child. And dying in a grain silo.

So sick of Dr Turner. I wish they would wrap the show up now and remake some earlier episodes.

Needmorelego · 19/01/2026 08:22

@HollyhockDays I think most of them know Geoffrey is gay but they wouldn't say it out loud or talk to him about it (except Trixie probably).
By 1971 it's no longer illegal but it was still very much not spoken of.

No, Dr Turner's dad was an ironmonger! Interesting if he appears in the prequel.

Even if Sister Veronica left the order to adopt, that wouldn't have been allowed as a single woman. This is why I think there will be a Lavender marriage - so Beryl can have a baby (adopt) and Geoffrey can have a veneer of respectability!

Has there been a new episode ?!!

Last night's episode is now on the iplayer.

I think more happened that we don’t know about yet, which is why she was hesitating about phoning him. I think he’s offered to marry her or told her she should leave the order and adopt a child

I was thinking that, why was Sister Julienne so rattled - surely she’s dealt with loads of births like that (and worse) before

TheNightingalesStarling · 19/01/2026 10:35

You would presume Trixie dealt with a lot worse, what with her being at the South Africa mission for a while, whete she did a C Section but was practically a junior midwife on that scene.

I presume they were trying to highlight how barbaric childbirth would have been without anaesthesia but it was very clumsy.

EtA... I can almost hear Suster Evangelina calm rational voice telling her it was nothing to worry about,

Last couple of seasons Sister Juliene has had the look of everything being baffling and shocking to her.
I think I called it the startled bunny look upthread.
Maybe the 70s is just too modern for her.
Sister MJ - she seems to love her technology (ie the telly) but Sister Juliene seems reluctant to change.

I feel like she is stuck in the past. I thought that she was wise in the earlier series.

I can remember when they covered gas and air in series 2. Sister of Angelina asked what was wrong with women gritting their teeth and getting on with it.

I missed last night's episode as I was out and was going to watch on iplayer today but reading the comments I think I will give it a miss. I get irritated enough by the medical inconsistencies as it is, but as I'm an anaesthetist it sounds like this one might tip me ober the edge! 😂
Sister M-J and her love of new technology reminds me of my late MIL. She was the epitome of a silver surfer, I think she probably had her iphone in her hand when she died. Her husband on the other hand couldn't send an email if his life depended on it! It's interesting how some people embrace change through the whole of their lives and others start to struggle. I confess that I have had a few "oh I can't be bothered with that" moments recently myself and I'm only 60!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 19/01/2026 13:35

This series has been good so far I think although Dr T is still insufferable, i mute the telly when he comes on as I want to scream otherwise 🙈😂
