Re Halloween, I was brought up Catholic, and All Saints Day (November 1st) was a Holy Day of Obligation, which meant that we would go to Mass. All Souls Day(November 2) was the day to pray for people you had loved who had died and probably go to Mass again to remember them.

Halloween was on the eve (i.e. the day before) All Hallows Day (i.e. All Saints Day). So there is nothing unChristian about that, in itself. It is part of the church calendar.

There are quite ancient traditions of handing out goodies like soulcakes, a sort of nice biscuit, to pay children for praying for your loved ones who had died, and this was the precursor I think of trick or treating.

We certainly didn't have trick or treating when I was a kid (and it wouldn't have been safe in our part of North London) but we did get taught loads about saints and Catholic views on the afterlife at school, and we went to church a lot, and my parents mourned the family members they had lost.

My own kids have got dressed up for Halloween, but not as anything involving skulls or blood as I wasn't comfortable with that. Pumpkins, cats and pirates, more like.

I had forgotten soul cakes - I don’t think they originated local to us but came via the Portuguese or Spanish families. However it was a long time ago 😂

We had skeletons, witches, wizards, vampires etc amongst the costumes - one of the teaching staff had a cracking skeleton outfit. It was the same at the adults dance at the social club run by the Catenians. The whole “bad news” thing over costumes is something I associate with much later times.

Loved Karen and Lewis. Fabulous routines.

We think any two of George, Ellie or Harry are for the dance off with, possibly, Amber as she doesn't seem to be popular.

Nikita's had quite a broad range of contestants and normally connects well with them. He doesn't seem to be pigeon-holed like some of the pros.

Layton came over as a diva (particularly in his earlier weeks, he did seem to mellow and take on feedback more in the later stages) but there was still chemistry in his and Nikita's dances.

I was a Layton sceptic, and I wasn't expecting to like La Voix much, but actually I like who Chris is; there's a lot of genuine emotion and care there when he scores well or was grateful for dodging the DO on his bad week.

I find Chris funny and this dance was easily his best but I find the inserted comedy routine three times a show is getting tedious. I think Chris last year managed a better balance of being funny but not letting it overtake the event (if that makes sense).
