Anyone watch last Wednesday’s Grand Designs?

The one where they knocked down a 1920s castle and started building a “ 21st century castle” on the site? Even though they already lived in a beautiful timber clad house in a beauty spot? Sold their house, London flat, raided mothers pension fund, borrowed, and kept going with the build, sinking million after million into it? It’s now for sale £7 million. Jaw dropping stuff.

Looks like it was built on Minecraft

Philandbill · 01/11/2025 16:34

Just awful. They'll surely never get their money back. Other than Stratford it's in the middle of nowhere! There's surely not that sort of money in that area? I felt really sorry for her, can't imagine living with that much debt hanging over you. Though Mummy bailed him out...

TheGander · 01/11/2025 16:41

I feel sorry for them too. A kind of insanity seems to set in with some of those projects. I hope they are ok in the long run.

I also think with these huge vanity projects … they’re missing a great chunk of their small kids childhoods focussing on all this. I know they’re with them and doing stuff but the focus must be elsewhere.

HaroldMeaker · 01/11/2025 19:32

Oh dear. Watching it now. This is the fugliest naffest house I’ve ever seen.

caramac04 · 01/11/2025 19:47

It’s a very ugly building.
What’s a Lavender marriage?

Yamyamabroad · 01/11/2025 19:52

The lovely barn house they had been living in is now a prize on Raffle House. Something has gone on there 🤔

dogsandbunnies · 01/11/2025 20:04

Watching it now. Why bother?! If they were worried about the land being sold to developers they could have just bought and demolished it then planted trees, meadows etc. So weird.

user5972308467 · 01/11/2025 20:12

The view though - I’d pay millions for that outside my kitchen window!

dogsandbunnies · 01/11/2025 20:14

But they had that view already in their beautiful home!

MyballsareSandy2015 · 31/10/2025 17:10

Interesting to see it finished and furnished.

It was very unfinished in July of this year so I’d be very surprised if those pics weren’t artificially generated.

It’s a very ugly building.
What’s a Lavender marriage?

Gay man marries a straight woman to ‘pass as straight’ both very aware it’s not sexual. Or gay man marries gay woman

Denim4ever · 01/11/2025 20:27

Reminds me of Churchill College in Cambridge but not in a good way

Denim4ever · 01/11/2025 20:30

I looked up the original house. It was much nicer.

Vintagegoth · 01/11/2025 20:32

My face just puckered up in horror when I opened that link with the photos.

SpottyAardvark · 01/11/2025 20:45

I was really hoping this project would go completely tits up & that ghastly posh arrogant little prick would end up bankrupt.

Maybe it still might, because nobody is going to pay £8m for that hideously tasteless property in a normal town in the Midlands. Maybe if it was in the Home Counties or the Cotswolds or even the footballers’ ‘Golden Triangle’ in Cheshire it might achieve that price, but not in that location and not without a significant amount of land.

dogsandbunnies · 01/11/2025 20:46

Yes it seemed surrounded by other buildings when they panned out a bit.

TheGander · 01/11/2025 20:51

I agree with that money they could have bought up a lot of land around their original house. It’s now in a raffle! Something has gone very wrong.
Can’t help noticing the weasel words in the estate agent bumpf. “Eco credentials” - they were pouring concrete into that building for months. And they glide over the fact that for £8 million you get a place that’s far from finished. In essence, a money pit.

unlikelychump · 01/11/2025 21:11

Can someone link the raffle house? (Im not sure what a raffle house is)

Yamyamabroad · 01/11/2025 21:21

The draw is closing but just Google Raffle House Warwickshire

unlikelychump · 01/11/2025 21:41

So that house is for sale as well? Where are they going to live? The Castle isnt finished clearly. Or maybe the raffle house takes time to sell etc. Or is it already bought. It almost feels like they are going to end up homeless.

Nofksleft2give · 01/11/2025 22:22

I kept thinking the kids could hide from you in that house and never be found!

HarryVanderspeigle · 01/11/2025 22:41

It's just sheer greed that anyone would be building an 8 bedroom castle for a family of 4. I don't think they learned anything from the Cornwall lighthouse debacle. Such a shame, as they could have stayed in the barn, sorted out the utility access and sold the other castle on to new developers, or renovated it into a few posh flats for a fraction of the cost. Folly indeed.

TheGander · 02/11/2025 10:50

Another folly: 5 kitchens, including one in the gym. Why???

PermanentTemporary · 02/11/2025 10:56

Oh my God that’s ugly. And the interior is super bland, makes sense that it may be AI generated.

You can learn to love ugly houses but I doubt the sort of person who has 7 million to spend would bother.
