Is there a thread yet?

Just finished watching the second episode. Wow it's good. I always love the leads anyway and yes it was a bit predictable but am hooked.

It's helped fill the Slow horses hole. Absolutely loved that. Tense ending but so clever.

You do understand there are black posters on MN, and on this thread, who might find your post offensive?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 15/12/2025 08:59

I am not the only one to mention this
it could be similar looking white men,

The point is they were not similar looking black men. They looked nothing like each other.

I haven't read this thread (sorry) but just finished watching this as a binge watch.

What a disappointment.

It could have been a really good political thriller, but was undermined but "aren't we clever" scripts writers putting in knowing jokes, and quite honestly a lot of carboard cliched characters.

What a waste of a good cast. Ruth Wilson is one the best actresses around and Emma Thompson is in danger of being type cast.

At one point they even tried to echo Thelma and Louise.

Its a shame tv programme makers seem more interested in showing off to each other, rather than creating an interesting story and devoloping it and the characters.

More than a hint that they were pandering to american stereotypes of Brits to make it palatable to a US audience.

The Zoe books are not political thrillers they are about a PI and the isolation they often experience - if anything Herron was channeling noir PIs from the Chandler period. The stories may intersect with conspiracies but that isn’t the main object.

The relationship between Ruth/Zoe is pretty consistent with my memories of the book (albeit I read them 20 years ago).

I didn't realise there were books, and so I was just viewing it as a tv script, but thanks

I will check if the books are on Audible.

I'm surprised to read that the books are much more about Zoe; I felt like we spent quite a lot of time with Sarah and she was the main character, if I had to pick one.

Having seen that the books were written some time ago, and the script for this series went out of its way to reference current "issues" it would seem the script writers have put a different slant on the storyline.

All too often adaptations turn out not to be a tribute to the book / author but just a starting off point for someone who wants to make another point.

diddl · 16/12/2025 17:27

I think more Zoe would have made for a much better series.

I think most of Herron’s books are on Spotify so I’d expect them to be on Audible. The Zoe books are earlier than the Sough House series, Slough House is from the more experienced writer but they are worth a listen/read.

Yes, Zoe was the main character of the books, I think that was slightly lost and some of Zoe’s perspective disappeared under the “political thriller” adaptation.

Yes I checked and put them on my wish list. (As my memory is so bad I would never remember the recomendation, or that it came via MN Telly Addicts. Thanks.

Oh, it was pretty silly in the end.

I guess they wanted it to be funny and tense in the same way Slow Horses can be, but it just felt uneven. And it didn't make a lot of sense if you stopped to think about it - although that's Slow Horses too.

I liked the dead husband - it's a shame he got killed off so early. And I warmed to Ruth Watson's character despite everything. Zoe is a good character though - more could be done with her?

One of the problems was that two of the main tropes are pretty cliched now - government conspiracy and the almost-indestructible psycho. Both feel a bit tedious whereas they probably weren't 20 years ago.

That fishing village is gorgeous. Am off to google.

diddl · 19/12/2025 14:46

I haven't got past ep5.

Just realised that I haven't see series 5 of Slow Horses yet & have just started series 2 of Dark Winds.

So it may be a while before I get back to this-if at all!

noonames · 19/12/2025 20:10

I have only just discovered this and really enjoyed the books so was very glad to find it and start watching - what a load of old shite though 😔
Terrible script and I’m really surprised how awful Emma Thompson is, very Look At Me I’m Acting. The character is not at all how Zoe was originally written. The books are much better than this. I’m halfway through episode 2 and not sure how much longer I’ll last.
