On another note I've just read about the horrible sm messages being sent to LaVoix and Ellie. I suppose LV can deal with it, all though it's bound to be upsetting for him, but Ellie?
It's unbelievable, isn't it?

I'm guessing that none of the nasty messages to Ellie are to do with her dancing. There's an awful lot of abelist people out there unfortunately.

I'm hoping it's not true, but as pp said - it's unfortunately common.

I watch on two levels - I love dance so enjoy the group numbers (usually... ) and the 'ringers' but really like those that develop through the series to become great dancers.

However, I think a ringer would be really be someone who has had serious ballroom/Latin training - dance lessons and learning routines for musical theatre or for a pop band member will help with musicality and core strength (and the sportspeople will have good core strength) but if you've not done proper ballroom or latin then you still have to learn the holds, steps and the rest in short order. Dance exprience helps a lot, but you need to be able to do the technical bits.

Jay was a Ringer?! He seemed so lacking in confidence at the start.

that's the way to play it as a ringer 😉. If you come out all guns blazing you have nowhere to go.
In all seriousness Jay was probably more invested in the the music side of his training and may be didn't feel confident as a dancer. I had a colleague who's Mum was French, she would not speak to our French clients in French because she felt her French wasn't up to scratch for someone with a French parent. I was happy to wheel out my very poor, mostly forgotten GCSEs French to ask them to wait while I found a French speaker or to offer a drink etc because I didn't feel any pressure.

@TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne
I remember them with Ashley, but if Amber goes there’s still Lewis; also some very good non ringers - Alex, George, Karen, Balvinder. They got rid of Pixie Lott before the semis too iirc.

Yes, it did sound like an understudy from the context.

I've got no idea if it was the understudy as I didn't see a cast list and didn't catch the preshow bit where they announce any changes. I'll Google Djalenga Scott and see if it was her.

Asunciondeflata · 27/10/2025 18:42

Thanks, @EineReiseDurchDieZeit
Interesting comments on the contestants from Craig now on ITT.

WarrenTofficier · 27/10/2025 18:48

Google tells me Djalenga Scott is 5'9" which seems about the right height as Velma was much taller than Roxy. She was fantastic, really impressive, not least because she managed to coordinate with the much smaller Janette, which must have been difficult for them to mirror so well with a marked difference in limbo length.

Guildford321 · 27/10/2025 18:57

They're all struggling to hold it together on ITT after JoJos little mispronunciation there!! Cheeky lot!!

I saw Chicago this summer too, and was pleasantly surprised how good Janette was, but you are totally right that Djalendra Scott was extraordinary.

Sounds like someone to watch!

Holluschickie · 27/10/2025 19:31

I saw Chicago too. Personally I thought Janette held her own. I saw it as playing her character Roxie, who is meant to be wannabe and trashy. While Velma is arrogant and cabaret royalty.

Djalenga Scott played Velma the day I saw it, and she was great, I agree.

Argh Djalenga! Sorry for spelling her name wrong. Agree with @Holluschickie that Janette played Roxie well, and Velma is kind of supposed to outshine her as you describe.

Janette was very good, better than I had anticipated and if I hadn't heard of her from Strictly I would have assumed she had a musical theatre background but Djalenga Scott had a much stronger voice - as you say it kinda suited the roles that the one playing Velma was the better singer/actor.
I wasn't disappointed which Janette at all, but I was more impressed with what I now know to be Djalenga. I tried to find out at the time but the list of the tourist cast I could find didn't match all of the cast that I could recognise on the day i.e. they listed Sinita as Mama and it definitely wasn't Sinita.

I'm glad that Janette has got a good musical theatre career post Strictly and post baby! That's good that she's back on stage

I am sure her mum runs a stage school or runs classes,

Janette? No, I don't think so. She studied economics at university and worked in a bank, she went into dance later in life.
Perhaps her parents knew dance from Cuba? I think they were quite poor.
I know that the Clifton parents ran a dance school.
