Has anyone watched the new tv series based on the book Leonard and Hungry Paul on BBC ?
If you have seen it what do you think ?
Julia Roberts is the narrator.
I just saw most of the first episode.

It’s wonderful. So refreshing and sincere.

Peachy2005 · 25/10/2025 00:52

Watched first one and didn’t like it. Second was much better, now on 3rd. When will we find out why he is called Hungry Paul because it’s kind of annoying me..?

Cheesecake53 · 25/10/2025 01:07

Loved it.

SaratogaFilly · 25/10/2025 20:58

I loved it too - finished it today. No idea why he’s called Hungry Paul though?

Hallelujah2020 · 25/10/2025 22:47

The book is beautiful and for the most part the adaptation is fairly true to it

Peachy2005 · 25/10/2025 23:54

Just did a search and apparently we never find out why he is called that!

highlandcoo · 26/10/2025 00:03

I read the book and loved it. Only watched the first episode so far and I think I'm OK with it; will persevere.
You never find out! It's sort of part of its charm.

purpleme12 · 26/10/2025 01:11

Well the first episode was brilliant

I laughed
The bag for life was brilliant

And was rather emotional at the end

I'm looking forward to the next one

It was a good tonic

hmmnotreallysure · 26/10/2025 09:50

Oh I absolutely loved this. So wholesome.

carkerpartridge · 26/10/2025 11:19

Just finished the whole series and loved it. The awards ceremony made me laugh!

NebulousSadTimes · 28/10/2025 13:58

I wasn't quite sure what I was watching with the first episode, or maybe I was a bit distracted, but I gave the second episode my full attention last night and loved it. It's lovely to see Lorcan Cranitch again, he's very good.

Crinkle77 · 16/11/2025 22:00

I've just finished this. First couple of episodes I wasn't too sure. By episode 5 I was a blubbering mess. The actor who plays Leonard has such an expressive face.

FurbieGurbie · 22/11/2025 17:53

I’m so glad there is a thread about this. I have just finished it and loved every minute. Alex Lawther is amazing as always as indeed is Laurie Kynaston.

I read that Julia Robert’s was such a fan of the book that her “people” emailed the author who was serendipitously in development for the TV series. He asked her if she would be the narrator and she said yes.

I know I’m gushing but the series was like a warm blanket and a mug of cocoa for the soul.

Ooh I hope someone can help!

What is the song that opens episode 4?

"My heart beats louder, I'm.five foot taller when you're around..."

Spotify play lists, Shazam, google etc are not helping!

FleaDog · 23/11/2025 20:30

And Shelley's blue and white stripey jumper from the final episide, does anyone k ow where it is from?

The end credits say that the composer is Oli Julian who has a prolific back catalogue of film and TV scores. His Spotify account isn’t showing up L & HP yet but hopefully he will add some tracks soon as the music is one of the best qualities of the show.

FurbieGurbie thank you!

I've binged watched this tonight, and it was so emotional. Heart breaking, heart warming and so wholesome. Beautifully written and acted. I loved it. From someone at a bit of a crossroads, the final scene will stay with me. I hope I can grow too.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 25/11/2025 02:06

I’ve watched it twice through. I think it’s beautiful.

’Leonard’ is such a good physical actor - his little ‘dance’ at the end of one of the episodes just makes me so happy.

And the bit where he lets his mum have the seat on the bus. Oh my 😥

FurbieGurbie · 25/11/2025 10:15

Diving deeper, I wonder if the book’s author created some of the music for the TV programme. Ronan Hession goes by the name of Mumblin Deaf Ro as a musician and there’s a familiarity with his music and some of the soundtrack.

I'm going to look out for the book

I really liked Hungry Paul's character
I mean I liked all of them but really liked his character
