I want to be you. I live in the country and would love to be able to name all the trees. And birds. It would be my thing.

But I seem to have little capacity to learn beyond, "Ooh, big pretty tree" or "lumpy pretty tree." A complete inability to retain any knowledge.

I don't have it, but apparently there is a good app called Merlin which listens to birdsong and identifies the bird for you.
