Pros & cons of The Gilmore Girls

I'm about 25 years late but am currently watching The Gilmore Girls for the 1st time. Its not my usual watch, I prefere darker programmes but I'm pretty hooked! I'd heard of it before, of course, and knew the general premise, but only decided to give it a go after being recommended it after talking to a friend who knew I loved Autumnal stuff. Was off work with a bad back and thought "why not?". I'm currently on series 4. Love the fact there are lots of episodes in each series. But, it IS dated. I was between Lorelai's and Rory's ages when it first came out and like the cultural references, fashions and attitudes that were prevalent at the time. I enjoy the relationships, the cosy feelings, the town characters etc. Not so keen on the whole food consumption aspect. They clearly do not eat that much and the sheer food waste they exhibit! Where does all the money come from for the take outs? Are they "pick me" girls? I know it's a tv programme and not real but was interested in what other people thought about it. Lighthearted obviously 🙂

The two main characters are absolutely vile. Self centred, selfish nobheads.
I disliked them so much!

JaneJeffer · 21/10/2025 13:21

I only managed half an episode. It was terrible.

Flamingnorahs · 21/10/2025 13:26

I am actually surprised I have been enjoying watching it. As I said, not my usual style at all. I wouldn't be friends with either lorelai or Rory in real life. So why am I so invested? Anyone else get hooked on things they don't normally like? Have my pain meds sent me crazy?? Either way, it's keeping me entertained!

The older i get the more I relate to Emily, she's the true beleaguered heroine of the story.

noblegiraffe · 21/10/2025 13:30

They are all terrible people except Luke and Lane.

abathofmilkwithladydi · 21/10/2025 13:31

A big pro for me is that when the main characters are bad, bad things happen to them, broadly. When they work on themselves, they tend to reap the rewards. Neither of them are supposed to be "heroines" I think. Just flawed individuals with emotional baggage.

shiverm · 21/10/2025 13:32

haha, I discovered the show late when i was around 25 (nearly 15 years ago). Pros: I use it to get to sleep at night, listen to episodes while i get to sleep, have been doing so for about a decade!! I had insomnia in my 20s and am no longer a sufferer. So one major pro hahah.

con: I really dislike Rory after about the 3rd series, she's great in one and two then puts on a baby voice and [long section redacted as it contained spoilers and I'd have been embarrassed to have done that to you!] . I think Lorerlei is as bad as her parents. L&R act all poor and underpriveleged, yet Rory goes to elite private school and yale without spending a penny, then criticises trust fund kids.

Pro: paris. best character imho. she auditioned for the part of rory, didnt get it, was only going to be a character while rory is at chilton, but was so good that she was written into the rest of the series.

I came to the show finding it annoying, and still do in ways, but clearly im a fan.

Sonic youth and their kid are in one episode. Thats how I make myself sound cooler. Oh and it led me to Joseph Cambell and the Power of Myth which I hadnt heard of but am very grateful to have learned about.

deirdrerasheed · 21/10/2025 13:32

It's worth a watch, the mum is a horrible brat, its the same era as sex in the city so ther you go. I watched it with my mum, we loved it.

CurbsideProphet · 21/10/2025 13:38

I love it, but then I don't want to watch dramas where women are being raped and murdered constantly.

I love the random community events, Luke, and the relationships between Lorelei and Rory and Emily and Richard.

NuffSaidSam · 21/10/2025 13:39

I haven't watched it for years, but I loved it as the time. All the characters are flawed, but that's life isn't it? I've yet to meet anyone in real life who isn't occasionally selfish or a bit of a nobhead tbh.

I love how silly it is, it's very much my humour.

I think Peppa Pig stole the idea of Miss Rabbit working in every job from Kirk in Gilmore Girls.

Lane is my favourite!

I watched it all three times. Once for each 2 maternity leaves and once with DD. I have come to love Emily too and her finale is wonderful.

I appreciate the censorship of spoilers! Glad I'm not the only one with a complicated view of the whole programme and the characters. Can't stop watching it!

I loved it too and binge watched it over a few weeks whilst with a newborn. Rory and Lorelei are both very unlikeable though, especially towards the later series.

CottageLoaf · 21/10/2025 13:51

I watched it about 10 years ago and enjoyed it for the setting and the cost watching.
Found Lorelei incredibly selfish and self-absorbed, and often wondered how any other character managed to hold a conversation with her.

fussychica · 21/10/2025 16:34

I watched several episodes, got bored with it very quickly and the characters had few redeeming features. It just wasn't for me.

Oh me too! I'm new to Gilmore Girls. On season 2 at the moment but Emily is my firm favourite.

mumonthehill · 21/10/2025 16:52

Its my absolute go to cosy up watch and as such I see no cons!!! DS even watches it with me!

Edited

Yes!! Emily had the perfect ending where as Lorelai and Rory became increasingly bigger dicks as the episodes progressed.

You haven’t asked the popular debate about who Rory’s best boyfriend was.

hellotoday27 · 21/10/2025 17:05

I liked and sympathised with Emily more and more as the episodes went on.
thought Lorelei was incredibly immature and spoilt.

ShowDownTime · 21/10/2025 21:20

I love GG. I don’t think you’re supposed to find the main characters to be flawless human beings. It’s true that Rory is a bit of a brat as the show progresses but only in certain respects. She’s pretty nice to most of the people she interacts with. The Dean storyline (later on) is morally questionable of course (and yet I loved it when I first watched it happen 🤷‍♀️ ) and most teens do something off-colour at some point. Lorelei treats her parents badly and I adore them but they were cold and distant to her growing up so it’s swings and roundabouts I guess.

Best boyfriend? Come on, her and Logan were written in the stars.

ADogRocketShip · 21/10/2025 21:26

gilmore girls is my fave. I remember it being on e4 every morning when I was at uni and I’d watch it whilst studying. I’ve watched it again and again throughout as I’ve got older and for me it’s like a cosy familiar show and makes me feel all happy and warm!

over time you’ll love Emily. Luke pisses me off in a particular series but overall like him. Loralai annoys me a bit at times and acts like a stroppy child but I do love the character too.
Do keep watching as they all develop a lot. I also love the 4 seasons later mini series - and love Emily in that one so much!

shiverm · 22/10/2025 08:27

yes actually i said Paris was my favourite but agree that Emily has some amazing lines and is a brilliant actor. her voice is so good. and nooooo not Logan @ShowDownTime , the clear choice is Jess haha. what a dreamboat. i like that there is no consensus on the bfs. maybe it's some kind of personality test.

Flamingnorahs · 22/10/2025 12:39

I've not seen a Logan yet but prefer Jess to Dean. Took me a while to realise he's the dad in "this is us"!

I love it! And re-watching with DD.
The characters have flaws, so what? I’m not watching to find role models, I’m watching for entertainment. And it is very entertaining, funny, many interesting characters and plots.
