Pros & cons of The Gilmore Girls

I'm about 25 years late but am currently watching The Gilmore Girls for the 1st time. Its not my usual watch, I prefere darker programmes but I'm pretty hooked! I'd heard of it before, of course, and knew the general premise, but only decided to give it a go after being recommended it after talking to a friend who knew I loved Autumnal stuff. Was off work with a bad back and thought "why not?". I'm currently on series 4. Love the fact there are lots of episodes in each series. But, it IS dated. I was between Lorelai's and Rory's ages when it first came out and like the cultural references, fashions and attitudes that were prevalent at the time. I enjoy the relationships, the cosy feelings, the town characters etc. Not so keen on the whole food consumption aspect. They clearly do not eat that much and the sheer food waste they exhibit! Where does all the money come from for the take outs? Are they "pick me" girls? I know it's a tv programme and not real but was interested in what other people thought about it. Lighthearted obviously 🙂

All the characters are just really really annoying.
I haven't watched the sequel one because I found I just didn't care what had happened to these characters 10 years later or whatever it was.

I stan Emily.

Statesider · 22/10/2025 12:51

I tried to watch it but found the way they say their lines was so fast. It was like they were racing to squeeze in all the dialogue.

FionnulaTheCooler · 22/10/2025 12:53

I'm on my first watch through too, currently up to season 3 but I've already seen a few spoilers so I'm not that fussed about having it "spoiled." I've been watching it with my teenage DD, we got into the habit of watching box sets together during lockdown and now we try to take a little bit of time together to sit and watch something after dinner. I'm not really loving it, but it's OK. I'm finding it hard to get past the cheesiness of how "perfect" their small town is bigged up to be all the time and I want to shake Lorelai every time she says she's her daughter's "best friend." She needs to grow up and act like an actual mother. I do like Richard and Emily though, and Paris is a fabulous character.

I really like it. Plus it’s an easy watch to just have on if you’re ill or folding laundry etc.

Like a lot of shows you need to suspend disbelief on any concerns around money, which is only an issue when the storyline needs it to be.

Rory and Lorelai are not great, Rory in particular is very entitled without thinking she has any privilege. But I do not understand the love for Emily tbh. She’s really horrible at times, and awful to her staff which is always a red flag!

Shinyandnew1 · 22/10/2025 13:07

Love Luke and Sookie. And Jess and Lane.

I thought Emily was horrid-so nasty to the maids!

Belladog1 · 22/10/2025 13:10

I watched this all the way through during lockdown. I loved it. I did try and rewatch it a few years ago, but I got bored. It's a great show though.

I love getting stuck into a series. I recently watched one called (I think) the L Word. I slightly got a crush on one of the women in it.

Oh the reboot is terrrrrible btw. Everything the show did, every character the show had, the town itself, all become caricatures of their already performative former selves, its unbearable.

the best thing about it was looking at how people have chosen to age, some really have looked after themselves and look so fit and healthy compared to their much younger selves, and some look…hm.
Emily looked the same?! Or I didn’t realise she was so young before.

EvelynBeatrice · 22/10/2025 15:04

I watched it many years ago with great enjoyment. Watching a few episodes more recently, I was struck by the fact that I much preferred Emily and Richard to Lorelei and Rory. Lorelei was a terrible daughter.

EvelynBeatrice · 22/10/2025 15:05

I agree the reboot was awful. Furious that Paris didn’t end up as president or something instead of running a sickening baby sale business. All very misogynistic.

I thought the reboot did Emily's story well though - I was happy with how it ended for her.

Lorelai I couldn't really understand what was going on during the reboot - felt like they had to just give her some degree of storyline. Rory I quite enjoyed because it was all about coming full circle, and there is truth in some rising stars during high school feeling totally out of depth in the real world.

Oh Paris was about the only character in liked.
She's the only one I would be vaguely interested in finding out how her life went.
So she ending up selling baby stuff? Did she have babies?

PixieandMe · 22/10/2025 15:45

I enjoyed this series for it's cosyness a few years ago.

My favourite character was the French hotel receptionist (cannot recall his name, sorry!).

EvelynBeatrice · 22/10/2025 15:47

Paris is literally making big money selling women’s bodies and babies - provides wombs for hire.

Oh 🙁

EvelynBeatrice · 22/10/2025 17:12

Quite. Horrid.
Emily, on the other hand, is having a fabulous retirement. Completely mellow and smiley with a huge new adopted family.

hidinginthebathroomagain · 22/10/2025 18:20

I only watched it to see Sebastian Bach who I loved as a 17 year old about 35 years ago but he wasn’t pretty anymore so I lost interest

hby9628 · 22/10/2025 18:31

I really wanted to enjoy this series. I’ve tried it a couple of times but I just can’t stand Lorelai. She is awful.

Flamingnorahs · 22/10/2025 19:49

I've just found out the actor who plays Lane was 27 when it started!!

The mothers were the best - Emily and Mrs Kim.

GagMeWithASpoon · 22/10/2025 20:21

I watched as a teen and hated Emily and loved Lorelai and wished she was my mum. Yeah, massive mummy issues there.

Then watched it in my 30’s with DD and realised Lorelai is an absolute twat , but still hated Emily.

Quite a few of the storylines bugged the hell out of me, but sparked some great conversations with DD so I guess that’s actually a pro.

ETA: A year in the life is an absolute pile of shite other than ironically, Emily’s story arc.

Billybagpuss · 22/10/2025 20:28

Watching the reboot and Mitchum was right Rory didn’t have it to work as a journalist 🤣

Emily is awful but Lorelai treats her worse.

logan was a twat with the wedding proposal

MrsLeonFarrell · 21/10/2025 13:27

The older i get the more I relate to Emily, she's the true beleaguered heroine of the story.

Agree. Loreal ivwas so horrible to her. Emily didn't throw her when she got pregnant but lolreai almost makes people want to think that.
Emily only wanted the best for her family
Yes she was over bearing but her heart was in the right place

Mrs Kim had an amazing arc. But lane has a crap arc
