Pros & cons of The Gilmore Girls

I'm about 25 years late but am currently watching The Gilmore Girls for the 1st time. Its not my usual watch, I prefere darker programmes but I'm pretty hooked! I'd heard of it before, of course, and knew the general premise, but only decided to give it a go after being recommended it after talking to a friend who knew I loved Autumnal stuff. Was off work with a bad back and thought "why not?". I'm currently on series 4. Love the fact there are lots of episodes in each series. But, it IS dated. I was between Lorelai's and Rory's ages when it first came out and like the cultural references, fashions and attitudes that were prevalent at the time. I enjoy the relationships, the cosy feelings, the town characters etc. Not so keen on the whole food consumption aspect. They clearly do not eat that much and the sheer food waste they exhibit! Where does all the money come from for the take outs? Are they "pick me" girls? I know it's a tv programme and not real but was interested in what other people thought about it. Lighthearted obviously 🙂

Guilty pleasure…l Each year, on the first morning of any snow (even just a flake or two), I dig out one of the snow episodes.

And of course the episode with Emily name-checking Shirley Ballas.

I watched it for the first time earlier this year - all series back to back - I loved Emily closely followed by Paris and Luke. I think Lorelai and Rory get worse with each series.

Best boyfriend - go with Jesse

Nobody has a kid that perfect. If they do, I hate ‘em 😁

Watching it currently whilst suffering from insomnia!

It's definitely dated. Some of the references are a bit problematic!

However, I do love it. It's cosy and I like the autumnal vibes. I used to watch it on E4 and my dad constantly referred to it as the fast talking show 🤣

I've started watching it for the first time, not sure how I missed it originally. DD has seen it before but recommended it to me. We are now on S2 and I'm loving it, though I'm also one of those dreadful creatures who loved Sex and the City, which is in a similar (obviously more adult) vein. Did not make the connection at all re Jess and dad in This is Us!!

Watching the reboot and Mitchum was right Rory didn’t have it to work as a journalist 🤣

Emily is awful but Lorelai treats her worse.

logan was a twat with the wedding proposal

I never thought there was anything wrong with Mitchum tbh. His wife was a cow, but he didn’t care about that “Rory isn’t good enough for Logan” stuff. The whole thing with him was only an issue because no one had ever told Rory she was anything other than god’s gift before.

I just rewatched the episode where Emily calls Mitchum’s wife a two bit gold digger fresh off the bus from Hicksville. Love that scene.

I love the secondary characters and the quirky, cosy vibe of the small town.

The whole story of Lorelai is unbelievable. She raised Rory on her own while at the same time working all hours at a low paid job and then she quickly rose through the ranks to manageress then owner so they can afford a good life, constant eating out and an amazing, large house full of stuff. Yeah right.

They leech off Richard and Emily's money and use all of their privilege when it suits them while at the same time claiming financial precariousness and cool, independent woman status.

From the point of view of relationships Lorelai is a sociopath and Rory is getting there.

All goes to show it's a good series with complex characters.

Pros: seems quite a nice series. DD1 has watched all of it, I bonded with her watching a few.

Cons: There is far too much to catch up with and I can't be bothrred.

That's about as deep as an analysis as it deserves. You seem to be asking for our permission to like it. Watch it if you enjoy it, don't bother if you don't.

I watched 3 seasons of it because so many people raved about it. I have no idea what everyone saw in it. I just found them all to be annoying.

I watched and loved it when the DC were tiny and still rewatch bits sometimes, comfort viewing.

Great cast.

Plenty of things to find frustrating and criticise with the writing, especially from season 6. Still enjoyable though.

Kelly Bishop’s performance is brilliant - her autobiography is fantastic too. Listened to it narrated by her. Includes lots about GG and some of her favourite moments and lines.

I hate watched it last year! Couldn’t bear either of them. Emily was a great character, as was Lane and Paris.
