New drama for 6w which sounds like it will be a right laugh with singing music pmt drink drugs and rock and roll !!

every Sunday for 6w

The Happy Valley creator has turned her darkest hour into a rebellious tale of midlife women uniting in musical anarchy. The team behind the highly awaited drama talk vodka, rock’n’roll and hot flushes

Riot Women, Sally Wainwright’s hotly awaited new drama, will be billed as a menopause show, and that’s fine – a show can be proud of such a shorthand in 2025, and besides, there’s a lot of menopause in it.

Lorraine Ashbourne stars as Jess, a smart-mouthed pub landlady, leading her best life (house full of grown kids and grandkids, a boyfriend who does literally everything she says. “I have, in Jerry, written a weak man,” says Wainwright, contemplatively, as if it’s the first time that’s ever happened. “But he’s very likable”).

Nonetheless, Jess is overwhelmed – like all of us – by the state of the world, and decides to start a rock band for a refugee fundraiser.

She needs bandmates, naturally, so enter Tamsin Greig as Holly, a retiring police officer

Joanna Scanlan as Beth, a ground-down teacher and

Amelia Bullmore (https://www.theguardian.com/stage/amelia-bullmore) as Yvonne, a midwife with a stick up her arse.

They’re joined by Rosalie Craig as Kitty, a very hard-living shoplifter, significantly younger than the others

– she’s late 30s/early 40s in this role, the others are all mid-to-late 50s – but also menopausal.

Her USP is incredible charisma and a stunning voice, belted out at pub karaoke with vivacious rage, when she isn’t drinking neat vodka straight from the bottle or vandalising cars.

Riot Women, the band, come together at once – the show starts off with the energy of a one-last-heist drama.

They’re planning to do an Abba cover, until Beth rebels. She’s absolutely done with being nice. She’s been a competent pianist, accompanying school choirs all her life; she wants their music to express what they’re actually feeling. The songs they end up with – composed for the show by indie-punk two-piece ARXX – land in the bit of the Venn diagram where punk meets the menopause: an absolutely uncompromising “fuck you”.

Across the six episodes, we're set to see how their journey to punk-rock stardom goes from penning their first original song to discovering that they've got a hell of a lot to say.

As per the series synopsis: "As they juggle demanding jobs, grown-up children, complicated parents, husbands who’ve buggered off, and disastrous dates and relationships, the band becomes a catalyst for change in their lives, and it’s going to make them question everything

The six-part series is a testament to the power of friendship, music, and the resilience of women who refuse to be silenced by age or expectation.

"As the story progresses, it’s more than music that binds them; a deeply potent, long-buried secret begins to surface – one that unexpectedly entangles Kitty and Beth, the two unlikely creative masterminds behind the band, in a complex triangle – and threatens to tear everything apart."

The series boasts a batch of familiar faces including Lorraine Ashbourne (Sherwood (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/sherwood-season-3-renewed-newsupdate/)), Amelia Bullmore (The Buccaneers), Rosalie Craig (Moonflower Murders (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/magpie-murders-season-2-release/)) and Tamsin Greig (Friday Night Dinner), as well as Joanna Scanlan (After Love), Taj Atwal (Line of Duty), Chandeep Uppal (Holby City) and Macy-Jacob Seelochan (Shadow and Bone).

Further casting includes Anne Reid (The Sixth Commandment), Sue Johnston (The Royle Family), Peter Davison (Doctor Who), Claire Skinner (Outnumbered), Angel Coulby (Merlin), Jonny Green (White Lines) and Ellise Chappell (Yesterday).

Tony Hirst (Hollyoaks), Shannon Lavelle (The Hardacres), Mark Bazeley (Broadchurch), Amit Shah (Happy Valley), Rick Warden (Red Eye), Ben Batt (Domina) and Natalia Tena (Harry Potter) also star.

Completing the cast are Melanie La Barrie (& Juliet), Oliver Huntingdon (Sherwood), Richard Fleeshman (The Sandman), Olwen May (A Very British Scandal), Kevin Doyle (Downton Abbey), Nicholas Gleaves (Bodyguard) and Thomas Flynn (Masters of the Air).

I’m usually a lurker on Blondes tv threads as can’t always watch day/time when the episodes are scheduled, will definitely give this a go as I like SW work it did feel slightly clichéd a great cast so will stick with it, promise I haven’t binged I reckon Kitty could turn out to be Toms mum popped into my head when I read the synopsis “ a secret that connect two members of the band” & saw last nights episode, probably way out on my guess anyone else had the same thought?

I guessed exactly the same!
we’ll see….

I am having this bet with an adopter friend!

I thought it was great, though with the fantastic selection of actresses they have in their 60s in it playing the main parts I'd describe it as women approaching retirement - why mention menopause at all? Menopausal is my age, 45 to early 50s. Perfectly happy with a drama about women in their early 60s but it should own what it is and not go on about menopause. They are almost a generation older than me.

EveryKneeShallBow · 13/10/2025 13:22

I thought it was just ok. Good to see the fabulous actors cast, but the characters were a bit stereotypical and some of the dialogue wasn’t good. Also, I liked the soundtrack, but that song they wrote themselves was hardly punk, really was it?

dontcallmelen · 13/10/2025 13:40

im not convinced menopausal symptoms stop in your sixties, I still have hot flushes albeit more occasionally now than wave upon wave, dry skin & brain fog so it does happen, symptoms were still very intense in my mid/late fifties.
yay glad others have thought of the friend connection, my second guess would be the character playing Tamsin Greig sister.

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/10/2025 13:48

@dontcallmelen that thought didn’t even cross my mind about kitty and tom

i did think Tom was an arse tbh

Cancelling his mums meal which was already a postpone delay in Mother’s Day anyway

which is March usually

so they cancel March md which is crap - then cancel the next end of month meal and move it another 4w away

he’s a selfish son

wonder why they adopted. Could she not have kids and does Tom talk to his dad more

I quite enjoyed it, and think it shows promise. The main character - I did sympathise with her feeling invisible. Kitty's singing at the end was great! I love that she was doing this amazing karaoke but the drinkers in the pub were ignoring her.
I really hope they can play their instruments properly, or at least competently, rather than just posing with guitars.

Umbilicat · 13/10/2025 13:54

I was really disappointed, - there was no subtlety, it was all so broad brush. I thought the Rosalie Craig character way OTT and far too glamorous to be so car-crashy. Didn't believe the head's dismissal of Joanna Scanlon and didn't believe her being suicidal. Didn't need TWO mothers with dementia. The music wasn't punk. The dialogue wasn't sharp. Menopause hammered at every turn. I may watch one more but it's not what I hoped and expected from SW.

dontcallmelen · 13/10/2025 13:55

Agree Blondes Tom wasn’t very likeable, did anyone see what was in Kitty’s handbag that she got back from the I presume man who wronged her I couldn’t make out what it was.

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/10/2025 14:02

The bit of paper ? Not sure. I couldn’t work it out

wonder if the carer is shagging in the sisters mums house - Anne Reid’s

Too busy doing Yorkshire Tea adverts? Maybe Sarah isn't musical. The question I would love to ask Sally is would/could she write for Sarah Smart again. I really miss her spikiness.

I loved her in Sparkhouse. I'm not sure I've seen her in anything else since.

It was a letter, from ‘West Yorkshire Council’. My bet is that it was contact from post-adoption services, notifying Kitty that (Tom) was trying to reunify with her.

dontcallmelen · 13/10/2025 14:23

Agentpidge I noticed the scene in the pub as well, hopefully will get a bit more subtly & less stereotypes in future episodes.

Ooh

CautiousLurker01 · 13/10/2025 14:36

Only watched first 20mins as dogs started demanding to go out and am excited for the rest of the series. Loved Happy Valley - the combination of humour and grit which is evident in this episode already.

Great cast in just the opening scenes and, as a menopausal woman with 2 ASD kids starting uni this year/next year - and a huge dose of empty nest syndrome heading my way - am keen to see this explored on TV. Plus, even though I am a crime addict, I am really in need of something new and non-crime that will make me laugh.

Thanks for the thread @Blondeshavemorefun

This isn’t a spoiler I promise, but Ive just watched episode two and it gets much better in my opinion.

alldressedupinblue · 13/10/2025 15:49

@ThePieceHallthank you for finding out, that’s kind.

im sorry to hear that adoption has not been straightforward for you. I’m looking forward to hearing your opinions on how SW has written it.

TheJustJoker · 13/10/2025 15:53

Bingeing on iPlayer. Very much out of the Sally Wainwright playbook (gritty northern women, sisterhood, dry humour, chaotic families etc etc) but am loving it so far (ep 2). The invisible woman/indifferent kids thing is resonating very strongly with me and bloody hell its much needed comic relief after Ed Gein!!

SW clearly has an interest in kinship/adoption (ref. Happy Valley also). She apparently has a paid police adviser consultant. I’d love to offer myself up as her adoption consultant! I’ll be honest, I’m dreading how the adoption reunification story (Kitty & Tom, if I win my bet!) will go. For very, very many adopters and adoptees, adoption is far from being a ‘happy ever after’ story.

Ok. We need to pause and zoom
on that scene

if it is then impressed at your deducting skills as well as @dontcallmelen

I really enjoyed it. Great bunch of actors. I'm quite obsessed with Lorraine Ashbourne since I saw Alma's Not Normal - she's a wonderful actress and a gorgeous woman

Loved how sparky and spiky the scene was where the women met up in the pub - all different personalities, different expectations, different priorities. Thought it was v well written and relatable
