New drama for 6w which sounds like it will be a right laugh with singing music pmt drink drugs and rock and roll !!

every Sunday for 6w

The Happy Valley creator has turned her darkest hour into a rebellious tale of midlife women uniting in musical anarchy. The team behind the highly awaited drama talk vodka, rock’n’roll and hot flushes

Riot Women, Sally Wainwright’s hotly awaited new drama, will be billed as a menopause show, and that’s fine – a show can be proud of such a shorthand in 2025, and besides, there’s a lot of menopause in it.

Lorraine Ashbourne stars as Jess, a smart-mouthed pub landlady, leading her best life (house full of grown kids and grandkids, a boyfriend who does literally everything she says. “I have, in Jerry, written a weak man,” says Wainwright, contemplatively, as if it’s the first time that’s ever happened. “But he’s very likable”).

Nonetheless, Jess is overwhelmed – like all of us – by the state of the world, and decides to start a rock band for a refugee fundraiser.

She needs bandmates, naturally, so enter Tamsin Greig as Holly, a retiring police officer

Joanna Scanlan as Beth, a ground-down teacher and

Amelia Bullmore (https://www.theguardian.com/stage/amelia-bullmore) as Yvonne, a midwife with a stick up her arse.

They’re joined by Rosalie Craig as Kitty, a very hard-living shoplifter, significantly younger than the others

– she’s late 30s/early 40s in this role, the others are all mid-to-late 50s – but also menopausal.

Her USP is incredible charisma and a stunning voice, belted out at pub karaoke with vivacious rage, when she isn’t drinking neat vodka straight from the bottle or vandalising cars.

Riot Women, the band, come together at once – the show starts off with the energy of a one-last-heist drama.

They’re planning to do an Abba cover, until Beth rebels. She’s absolutely done with being nice. She’s been a competent pianist, accompanying school choirs all her life; she wants their music to express what they’re actually feeling. The songs they end up with – composed for the show by indie-punk two-piece ARXX – land in the bit of the Venn diagram where punk meets the menopause: an absolutely uncompromising “fuck you”.

Across the six episodes, we're set to see how their journey to punk-rock stardom goes from penning their first original song to discovering that they've got a hell of a lot to say.

As per the series synopsis: "As they juggle demanding jobs, grown-up children, complicated parents, husbands who’ve buggered off, and disastrous dates and relationships, the band becomes a catalyst for change in their lives, and it’s going to make them question everything

The six-part series is a testament to the power of friendship, music, and the resilience of women who refuse to be silenced by age or expectation.

"As the story progresses, it’s more than music that binds them; a deeply potent, long-buried secret begins to surface – one that unexpectedly entangles Kitty and Beth, the two unlikely creative masterminds behind the band, in a complex triangle – and threatens to tear everything apart."

The series boasts a batch of familiar faces including Lorraine Ashbourne (Sherwood (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/sherwood-season-3-renewed-newsupdate/)), Amelia Bullmore (The Buccaneers), Rosalie Craig (Moonflower Murders (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/magpie-murders-season-2-release/)) and Tamsin Greig (Friday Night Dinner), as well as Joanna Scanlan (After Love), Taj Atwal (Line of Duty), Chandeep Uppal (Holby City) and Macy-Jacob Seelochan (Shadow and Bone).

Further casting includes Anne Reid (The Sixth Commandment), Sue Johnston (The Royle Family), Peter Davison (Doctor Who), Claire Skinner (Outnumbered), Angel Coulby (Merlin), Jonny Green (White Lines) and Ellise Chappell (Yesterday).

Tony Hirst (Hollyoaks), Shannon Lavelle (The Hardacres), Mark Bazeley (Broadchurch), Amit Shah (Happy Valley), Rick Warden (Red Eye), Ben Batt (Domina) and Natalia Tena (Harry Potter) also star.

Completing the cast are Melanie La Barrie (& Juliet), Oliver Huntingdon (Sherwood), Richard Fleeshman (The Sandman), Olwen May (A Very British Scandal), Kevin Doyle (Downton Abbey), Nicholas Gleaves (Bodyguard) and Thomas Flynn (Masters of the Air).

I started watching it with some scepticism, expecting a broad-brush, sit-com approach to the subject. I found it a lot more nuanced, enjoyed it, & will continue.
DP & I are middle-aged (very, very) amateur musicians, & after watching, I asked him to play some Never the Bride (my fave rock-chick band) on Spotify. We then found out they are touring, hooray! - so we are going to see them perform in Dec. His Xmas present to me, should be apropos

Ds (aged 16) accused dh and me of being ‘Sallyheads’ because we were waxing lyrical about Sally Wainwright over dinner.
We’re owning it- Sallyheads it is 😂

Hellinnnnn · 13/10/2025 20:49

Update: watched episodes 2 and 3 and it improves massively.
for the person who asked - I’m 56 and sandwichey like a lot of them.

1975wasthebest · 13/10/2025 22:16

It does improve. I finished it a bit earlier and though it’s not amazing - Sally Wainwright peaked a long time ago - it was undemanding and never boring, perfect TV to watch after work with a glass of wine.

Secondishspring · 13/10/2025 22:26

I was so looking forward to it but disappointed with episode 1. Felt really cliched. Will stick with it as pp suggesting that it improves.

SmearedLippie · 13/10/2025 22:37

Only watched Episode 1. Clunky, cliched script and some hammy acting, but the main actress was better and I loved that last scene where she is mesmerised by the redhead singing Violet.

I’ll give it a go.

Can I join the Sally heads please?

DataColour · 13/10/2025 23:23

Wasn't planning to watch this as it's not my usual genre, but as a big Sally Wainwright fan thought I'd give it a go and really enjoyed it. Great actresses (Sonja from Alan Partridge!), looking forward to watching the rest of it. There was an interesting Comfort Eating with Grace Dent podcast episode featuring SW last week. love hebden bridge too.

longtompot · 13/10/2025 23:34

I watched it this evening and really enjoyed it. Not as great as HV, but that has a lot to live up to imo. I'm not a big fan of Last Tango
I love Lorraine Ashbourne, especially in Almas not Normal like you @Lottapianos I was so sad when her character left
Tamsin Grieg felt a little bit Sarah Lancashire in HV to me
The opening was tough, even not having been personally affected by it, but it did get across how put upon and hidden she has been for a very long time, and how sad and desperate she was feeling. It felt a bit like the start of The First Wives Club, though it was for different reasons, she too felt invisible
I'm looking forward to watching the rest and seeing how the characters develop

Charredtea · 13/10/2025 23:48

Amazing show, not finished yet but really enjoying it.
It’s a bit schlocky and mawkish in places but not too much,
I love the characters, particularly the main two women and the Friday night dinner mum, she’s fab in everything I’ve seen her in so far.
lush show, I want to recommend it to all my friends
standard Brit gritty dramady, would lend itself well to a film .
thanks @Blondeshavemorefun

Started watching on Sunday and having another episode today. Really enjoyed the music - Skunk Anansie and Gwen Stefani/No Doubt are always very underrated I feel.

A little OTT in places but also very good for calling out the womanswork that's often barely recognised on these shows (I'm thinking of the brother on the phone who has no clue about the care needs of his parent and hasn't visited in years but wants inheritance for example).

It has made me want to learn the drums a bit but I don't have space.

Greedybilly · 14/10/2025 10:26

I wanted to like it but it made me cŕinge! Also live near where it was filmed and dreading more bloody tourists.

OverlyFragrant · 14/10/2025 10:36

I really do like the show, have watched all episodes.
My biggest bug bear is the characters aren't fully developed, apart from Kitty. I get there's only so much you can do in the 6 episodes, but I wish their backgrounds, hopes, fears and dreams were really explored. As it stands its akin to a band full of backing singers instead of talent of their own, ironic really.
Also, the men are so poorly written, this is a change when its usually women that are one dimensional characters. Of course, the only male that gets a free pass from being a misogynistic bell end is the one that wears a dress.
Plus ca change.
The soundtrack is banging though.

LeanToWhatToDo · 14/10/2025 11:05

On that, is there a soundrack? I am only on Ep 2 and I have them on my playlists but mixed in with less angry ones, so an actual soundtrack would be ace.

ilovebrie8 · 14/10/2025 13:08

I love Sally W as Last Tango and Happy Valley were so brilliant.....this much less so.

Watched the first episode on Sunday and will see what this week brings but not really enjoying it that much so far it hasn't gripped me...it is not her normal standard of programme...I'd have preferred her to write another series of Last Tango 😉but that's just me.

Yes, we are expecting to be mobbed this weekend!

the80sweregreat · 14/10/2025 15:45

We’ve had ‘ Rock Follies’ and we’ve had ‘school of rock’. This is ‘ Meno rock ‘

SydneyCarton · 14/10/2025 15:47

Lorraine Ashbourne is great as the bitchy sister-in-law in Housewife, 49, which is another brilliant drama about an overlooked woman finding her place in the world - albeit it takes WW2 to do it rather than the menopause! She's also married to the brilliant Andy Serkis, and their children are all actors too.

the80sweregreat · 14/10/2025 15:47

I didn’t do the actual Happy valley tour, but I have been to Hebden Bridge and I thought it was lovely , even though it tipped it down all day.! I can imagine the tourists can be a pain though if you live and work there.

Throughly recommend “housewife 49” the sublime & very sadly missed Victoria Wood is a joy to watch a beautiful piece of drama.

It rains a lot. But not so much lately. So we are in the bizarre position of having a flood warning three weeks (?) ago but simultaneously on a hosepipe ban from Yorkshire Water. It is a brilliant place to live and bring up children. We are so lucky. We will grumble about the influx of new tourists but it’s brilliant for the businesses in town. I really hope that they benefit from the extra interest.

the80sweregreat · 15/10/2025 03:12

Lorraine Ashbourne was wonderful in ‘ Almas not normal’ as her Nan. She’s a very natural actress.

the80sweregreat · 15/10/2025 15:07

I actually felt the pain of that knife in Kitty’s face :(
It did have a bleak opening episode with Beth and her woes too.

Violetparis · 16/10/2025 08:13

I like the leading actresses in this but not enjoying it as much as I thought I would. Find it a bit clunky and cliched with too many awful male characters.
