New drama for 6w which sounds like it will be a right laugh with singing music pmt drink drugs and rock and roll !!

every Sunday for 6w

The Happy Valley creator has turned her darkest hour into a rebellious tale of midlife women uniting in musical anarchy. The team behind the highly awaited drama talk vodka, rock’n’roll and hot flushes

Riot Women, Sally Wainwright’s hotly awaited new drama, will be billed as a menopause show, and that’s fine – a show can be proud of such a shorthand in 2025, and besides, there’s a lot of menopause in it.

Lorraine Ashbourne stars as Jess, a smart-mouthed pub landlady, leading her best life (house full of grown kids and grandkids, a boyfriend who does literally everything she says. “I have, in Jerry, written a weak man,” says Wainwright, contemplatively, as if it’s the first time that’s ever happened. “But he’s very likable”).

Nonetheless, Jess is overwhelmed – like all of us – by the state of the world, and decides to start a rock band for a refugee fundraiser.

She needs bandmates, naturally, so enter Tamsin Greig as Holly, a retiring police officer

Joanna Scanlan as Beth, a ground-down teacher and

Amelia Bullmore (https://www.theguardian.com/stage/amelia-bullmore) as Yvonne, a midwife with a stick up her arse.

They’re joined by Rosalie Craig as Kitty, a very hard-living shoplifter, significantly younger than the others

– she’s late 30s/early 40s in this role, the others are all mid-to-late 50s – but also menopausal.

Her USP is incredible charisma and a stunning voice, belted out at pub karaoke with vivacious rage, when she isn’t drinking neat vodka straight from the bottle or vandalising cars.

Riot Women, the band, come together at once – the show starts off with the energy of a one-last-heist drama.

They’re planning to do an Abba cover, until Beth rebels. She’s absolutely done with being nice. She’s been a competent pianist, accompanying school choirs all her life; she wants their music to express what they’re actually feeling. The songs they end up with – composed for the show by indie-punk two-piece ARXX – land in the bit of the Venn diagram where punk meets the menopause: an absolutely uncompromising “fuck you”.

Across the six episodes, we're set to see how their journey to punk-rock stardom goes from penning their first original song to discovering that they've got a hell of a lot to say.

As per the series synopsis: "As they juggle demanding jobs, grown-up children, complicated parents, husbands who’ve buggered off, and disastrous dates and relationships, the band becomes a catalyst for change in their lives, and it’s going to make them question everything

The six-part series is a testament to the power of friendship, music, and the resilience of women who refuse to be silenced by age or expectation.

"As the story progresses, it’s more than music that binds them; a deeply potent, long-buried secret begins to surface – one that unexpectedly entangles Kitty and Beth, the two unlikely creative masterminds behind the band, in a complex triangle – and threatens to tear everything apart."

The series boasts a batch of familiar faces including Lorraine Ashbourne (Sherwood (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/sherwood-season-3-renewed-newsupdate/)), Amelia Bullmore (The Buccaneers), Rosalie Craig (Moonflower Murders (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/magpie-murders-season-2-release/)) and Tamsin Greig (Friday Night Dinner), as well as Joanna Scanlan (After Love), Taj Atwal (Line of Duty), Chandeep Uppal (Holby City) and Macy-Jacob Seelochan (Shadow and Bone).

Further casting includes Anne Reid (The Sixth Commandment), Sue Johnston (The Royle Family), Peter Davison (Doctor Who), Claire Skinner (Outnumbered), Angel Coulby (Merlin), Jonny Green (White Lines) and Ellise Chappell (Yesterday).

Tony Hirst (Hollyoaks), Shannon Lavelle (The Hardacres), Mark Bazeley (Broadchurch), Amit Shah (Happy Valley), Rick Warden (Red Eye), Ben Batt (Domina) and Natalia Tena (Harry Potter) also star.

Completing the cast are Melanie La Barrie (& Juliet), Oliver Huntingdon (Sherwood), Richard Fleeshman (The Sandman), Olwen May (A Very British Scandal), Kevin Doyle (Downton Abbey), Nicholas Gleaves (Bodyguard) and Thomas Flynn (Masters of the Air).

It was shocking all the way though, it rattled through a great load of issues at high speed. Think Sally must read Mumsnet. Think it will resonate with more than a few women of a certain age.

It definitely resonated with me, even though I'm way past 'a certain age' . When one of the characters said " do you ever feel as though you're in a parallel universe?" I realised I've felt like that for the last 20 years! 🤪

KnutsfordCityLimits · 12/10/2025 22:21

That’s what I thought @Daisypod- seems a bit of a coincidence if it isn’t actually based on their story. I don’t feel like watching it for that reason.

CuddlesKovinsky · 12/10/2025 22:33

Hadn't even registered it was on, but I got sucked in by its energy, wit and grit and will definitely watch the rest! Seems to have a character strand for everyone, situations a lot of people will chime with...

Still digesting Ep 1 but it's got a helluva cast, hasn't it? Some real powerhouse actors, and seem to be sparking well off each other.

Sidebeforeself · 12/10/2025 22:36

Oh no I thought it was poor! Thought there were lots of cliches and didn’t see anything that raised a smile. I’ll give it another go cos I love some of the actresses but I’m unimpressed so far.

Clawdy · 12/10/2025 22:52

Didn't like the suicide scene, not sure why she started it that way, very off putting for many. Enjoyed some of the later parts.

Scrollers · 12/10/2025 23:00

I couldn’t stand the Joanna Scanlan character - she was so wet and poor me. Otherwise i think it has some promise

1975wasthebest · 12/10/2025 23:04

The writing of the Joanna Scanlan character was crap. We should have had some knowledge of why she wanted to take her own life before she tried to.

1975wasthebest · 12/10/2025 22:13

I enjoyed it on the whole and love the Jess character. Disappointed the 'invisible woman' trope was wheeled out - that was lazy of SW. And I don't recall Hebden being as ethnically diverse as its being depicted here.

I felt that was quite apt really. We’ve all seen it - well at least I have - the young pretty dippy women get coddled when they start crying over bugger all whilst the competent middle aged women have to just get on with it and no one gives a shit

Lincslady53 · 12/10/2025 23:12

diddl · 07/10/2025 08:57

I'm guessing the inspiration was Rock Follies & that was thought of by three women wasn't it?

Sally Wainright was interviewed on the radio in the week, and said she enjoyed Rock Follies as a youngsters, and wanted to write a modern version, with older women.

Edited

Sure, I just don’t think it should have been directly referred to. It felt clunky and clichéd.

Foolsgold74 · 12/10/2025 23:20

I didn't last 5 minutes. Thought it was awful. Dull and badly acted. The script was nonsense.

alldressedupinblue · 13/10/2025 00:26

@ThePieceHall who was the facilitator at Hebden Bridge please? I’ve seen some q and a clips but she’s not featured. Thank you!

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/10/2025 02:27

Thank you @ThePieceHall and @Gingercar

it did say at beginning suicide scenes so my senses were up , but could mean any
thing from jumping off a building /in front of train to slashing wrists /tablets

the rope /noose was a very obvious hint so moved eyes from screen

similar to HMT - a lot of hanging there and avoiding scenes

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/10/2025 02:29

Anyway the rest I did enjoy. Amazing cast and as a ‘cough’ 52 mature woman 😉 I did find some of the scenes true to life

tho no issues at all with menopause myself - unlike friends

I may rewatch it as think a few things that may have missed as so full on

but a good drama on a Sunday

I'm new to threads by @Blondeshavemorefun and only found this because I saw the title on trending and I'm a huge SW fan, since the days of Sparkhouse. Bit shocked at ransoms coming on just to object about caps - bit rude. I will know to look out for these threads in future.

As for RW - hanging was a bit close to home for us too but once we got past the first few minutes we were right in there. IME each SW series feels like bumping into an old friend again, warts and all.

I think she had had enough

that was the impression I got

didn’t enjoy her job. Being told she was a bully /not caring to younger teachers who cock it up

downtrodden by her bullying lazy brother

shattered from caring for her elderly mum

and once she knew her mum would be ok with the money for her care if lived 3yrs + she could then kill herself

and felt she had nothing left

then her friend rang to say we need you

that’s how it came across to me

Have to say I did look away to begin with. When saw the rope. It’s something I can’t handle ever as that’s how dh died and I can’t do hanging scenes

Yes, my DH died in a similar way. It was a bit too much for me so missed the start
But I persisted …

I actually play in a band and gig regularly. I really dislike any portrayal of women as incompetent musicians as those of us who do gig generally have to be technically better than the men (of which there are many!). It’s feeling a bit contrived so far - but I’m sure it will get better as I’ve loved everything that Sally Wainwright does so far.

SydneyCarton · 13/10/2025 07:45

I enjoyed it so far, though I agree that some of it did feel a bit contrived. The “sexy messy crazy” type of female character always irritates me, and I’m surprised to see it here as I usually assume it’s a feature of male writing. I think women’s experience of poor mental health is more embodied by Jess’s character, the quiet desperation of struggling on until suddenly you can’t anymore. I hope Sue Johnson gets more to do than just sit at the table looking daffy, and Anne Reid is always great.

MyOtherProfile · 13/10/2025 07:52

I'm thinking that the sexy messy crazy character may well have some development - I hope so.

I meant to say that I didn't mind the invisible woman trope. I think it needs banging home a bit!

FallingIntoAutumn · 13/10/2025 07:55

Dh sat there going
“They sound like you”
when they were banging on about it’s always bloody men, and being invisible.

funny that isn’t it.

it’s got a great sound track so far.

I agree with this. I watched it (ep 1) all the way through, but felt that although there were some stronger characters, a lot of the script was clunky and weak. The whole pub landlady character felt like a device, ooh handily there’s a talent show, ooh handily I’ve been secretly learning the drums, ooh, handily my family covers all the interesting demographics to show just how Hebden I am…
I will watch it all as I’m a big fan of both Tamsin Greig and Anne Reid but my expectations were lowered quite a bit following episode 1.
