Monster - the ED GEIN story on Netflix

Started this last night. It's beautifully filmed in parts but wow it takes you aback at certain bits. I didn't realise that the movie Psycho was based on this guy. It's not for the faint hearted.

The aspect I didn’t like was how the series aligned Ed’s monstrosity with the Psycho actor’s ‘monstrosity’- being gay. The narrative was that no matter what the actor did, no matter how sadly repulsed he was by his own self, he couldn’t escape the way he was, he just was. Which is so dangerous and something I’ve seen many times before: using homosexuality as a comparison for deviancies as if to justify them. Like when people explain away immoral and illegal proclivities as being on some sort of sexuality spectrum. It only demonises anyone who happens to not be straight. So I was surprised and disappointed by that particular storyline. However I am only going off what I’m seeing in the episodes. I don’t know anything about the real life character the actor playing so I might have missed some major context.

I didn't take it in that way. I think it was Hitchcock and others in the movie business at that time who used it against him as it were. Hitchcock did suggest to Anthony Perkins that he was a monster inside. This was common in Hollywood at that time. I think it was Hitchcock who was portrayed as a monster.

Sorry so many posts but I've found it intriguing. 🧐

Ryan Murphy is gay himself so often has gay themes in his shows (and lots of hot naked male actors in lingering close ups).

Yes Hitchcock likened Ed’s ‘sexual dysfunctions’ and therefore his ‘sickness’ to Anthony’s ‘sickness’ specifically. Those homophobic views are backed up by Anthony himself and, unfortunately also his therapist with and the medical profession.
Its the juxtaposition of Anthony’s sexuality to Ed’s being….everything he is/was which the episode is centred around. I don’t know how else that is supposed to be interpreted by the viewer. The intention is clear, and I’m not keen.
The thing as a whole though I found the acting outstanding and a straightforward enough watch. I felt like I was in film studies at school at times and could have done without but that’s just personal opinion.

Indeed he does!

This story is everywhere right now - what a coup for Charlie Hunnam.

Watched the first episode the other night. Couldn’t bring myself to watch another straight away; will need to space them out. You can definitely see how Psycho was inspired.

Didn’t realise that he actually killed so few people.

Was irritated by the way they had him talking. Did he really sound like that? Also was quite jarring having someone so obviously physically attractive as Charlie Hunnam playing him. Difficult to make him come across as a creepy weirdo when he looks like that!

He did kill many women and the occasional man. He could only be tried for one murder because of insanity.

Scrabsqueak · 09/10/2025 17:55

When did Robert Bloch say he hadn’t heard of Ed Gein, I wonder? He died in 1994, so who would have asked him and why? ( sorry a pp mentioned this and I’ve been trying to work it out?)

wizzywig · 09/10/2025 18:00

His mum (aunt Jackie from roseanne) is amazing. Absolutely horrible !!

beaniebabby · 09/10/2025 18:00

@Scrabsqueak I read it online somewhere recently.

It wasn't this but this came up
when i googled

Actually he only had two confirmed “kills”he may have killed more but there was no evidence.

Scrabsqueak · 09/10/2025 21:04

@beaniebabby thank you, that’s interesting.

I've only seen the first episode and thought it was brilliantly done, the scenery the music, the weirdness. Feeling sorry for him because he comes across as having special needs at this stage.

Does it get very graphic and disturbing?

Couldn't believe how his brother's death was put down to hypothermia and no one seemed to to notice the massive head injury.

Hunman is mesmerising in this so far.

I'd say episode 5 is the most graphic out of them all.

To be fair there is no evidence he killed his brother.

CityofOliveBranch · 12/10/2025 13:22

I was SO looking forward to this after being a huge fan of the first two series, but I turned off about halfway through Ep1.

The affected voice used by Charlie Hunnam was so irritating and jarring, but also hilarious (sounded like Kermit or Winnie the Pooh) and obviously not meant to be funny. So I couldn’t relax into my usual viewing mode.

I hope the Lizzie Borden series will be an improvement, for me at least.

To be fair there is no evidence he killed his brother.

In the episode he whacked him with a log causing a massive pool of blood so even if it couldn't be proven who did it that was surely the cause of death not hypothermia unless I'm missing something?

everyoldsock · 12/10/2025 16:00

The brother died from heart failure.

Sandy483 · 12/10/2025 16:16

I watched a couple of episodes but I'm not really into it, the Jeffrey Dahmer one was much more interesting and better done I thought. The stupid voice and Nazi scenes are just annoying.

'My Father the BTK killer' currently on Netflix is much, much better IMO.

They put that in the show but in real life there was no evidence he was killed. Obviously he might have been but no suspicious circumstances at the time

everyoldsock · 12/10/2025 18:02

There were suspicious circumstances - the brother was found with bruises on his head. But there was no investigation.

Gloriia · 12/10/2025 18:07

I do wish he used his normal voice though, the high pitched sing songy one is distracting.

LondonLady1980 · 12/10/2025 22:46

I’ve watched three episodes (the last one being the one with the Baby Sitter), and I found that episode quite disturbing. I really wanted to look away when he wheeled out the corpse of his mother and was putting the hammer in her hand when trying to kill the baby sitter.

I have never heard of the actor before but I might go and Google him as this thread indicates he must be very well known?

I cannot cope with his voice though. I find it so distracting.

And why does his girlfriend look like a teenager whereas he seems to be about 30?

I had never heard of this serial killer before and me and DH just happened to come across this series on Netflix and decided to watch it.

I think I’m going to go and do some background reading on him as it may help me understand the series better….. I’m finding it a little hard to follow with all the back and forth timeline and the side plots regaridng the Nazis and Hitchcock etc.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 15/10/2025 10:56

There is so much made up in this series it’s unreal! I know they like to make things more dramatic for entertainment but so many lies it’s put me off.
