Boardwalk Empire offered for free via my VM package - should I watch all 5 series

Quite fancy a binge watch, but I know absolutely nothing about this series.

Has anyone watched it, and if so, is it any good.

If there are long drawn out scenes of violence I'm not really interested, though.

Thanks!

(Have just seen they are charging £79.99 via their store which makes me think I should watch as it is financially a great offer!)

Yes. It's excellent. It’s a bit violent, unsurprisingly, but given the storyline, it fits.

MissSuisse · 06/09/2025 21:36

Yep it’s awesome

Cutleryclaire · 06/09/2025 21:36

Quite simply, yes.

CalzoneOnLegs · 06/09/2025 21:38

It is very violent OP

CalzoneOnLegs · 06/09/2025 21:40

I will never forget the teeth scene - ever 🥲

Childrenare4life · 06/09/2025 21:40

One of the best series made. Its set during the same period as peaky blinders which is interesting in itself as you see how advanced America was compared to the UK. It's far superior to Peaky blinders BUT you have to pay attention, a lot of characters, slow to start but well worth it. I've watched it 4 times and would happily watch it again and again.

It is absolutely fantastic. One of the best. I used to see Kelly MacDonald a lot on the street and be awestruck as a result.

Lafufufu · 06/09/2025 21:53

Yes. I love it.
One of my fave shows.

IwantToRetire · 06/09/2025 21:57

Thanks for such quick responses.

I suppose I will have to do what I often do with drawn out depictions of violence on tv is close my eyes and hum!

So will probably start tomorrow as just finishing a series now.

@IwantToRetire I do that too ! I can’t even bear to look at adverts with meat on them especially the recent sainsburys one when there is a close up of the steak 🤮 BE is good, some great actors in it, but it is violent. Not in the same league WRT to quality but the Reacher TV series was too violent for me and I had to look away several times.

CoastalCalm · 06/09/2025 22:26

I tailed off early in season 4 when it became all about the violence and the same story line - much preferred when Margaret was involved and it was some relief from it all

IwantToRetire · 12/09/2025 17:30

Just came back to say I have started watching it. Hadn't realised it was first shown in 2009.

So I am only a few episodes in, and strangely the violence hasn't seemed so bad.

But I think that whatever atmposphere or sense of that period of time is a bit undermined by it looking like a shoot for Vogue magazine or something.

On one level it is really soothing, lovely clothes, lots of details in furnishing and everything, but it is a shiny, glamour magazine feeling.

And, although this series may have been a front runner, so many of the characters are now almost cliches.

And usually I am fed up with tv series that seem to think having basically nude women in endless scenes is essential, at least here the characters of the women of the Temperence League are allowed to be more than a negative cliche.

Thanks for encouraging me to give it a go.

Forgot to add, and suspect it is a VM problem, but the sound track in each episode so far is slightly out of sync, so I have to avoid looking a characters' mouths when they are speaking!
