New drama sunday and Monday nights 9pm on ch 5

You know how we love a ch 5 drama ……..

Insomnia on Paramount Plus stars Line of Duty’s Vicky McClure as a woman who can't sleep and fears she’s losing her mind.

Based on the bestseller Insomnia by Sarah Pinborough (the
drama follows Vicky's character Emma Averill, a successful career woman who inexplicably stops being able to sleep and must unravel the secrets to her painful past before her insomnia takes her over the edge.

The gripping series also stars
The Gold (https://www.whattowatch.com/watching-guides/the-gold-cast-plot-and-all-about-the-true-crime-robbery-drama) star Tom Cullen as Emma's husband Robert.

Insomnia follows Emma Averill (Vicky McClure), a successful career woman, wife and mother who starts to suffer from insomnia (sleep deprivation) a few weeks before her 40th birthday.

What’s scary is that the exact same thing happened to her mother, who suffered a violent psychotic breakdown on the night of her own 40th.

Emma's mother had warned her that she had the same "bad blood" and would suffer an identical fate, so when history starts to repeat itself Emma is terrified for her future.

As events worsen, Emma’s world begins to unravel and she realises she must delve into her painful past to find the answers to her present and prevent a second tragedy in the family.

For Emma, it’s not just the insomnia but the stuff she’s doing when she’s asleep, which she has absolutely no control over, like sleepwalking, which is very disconcerting for her.

This has come off the back of something that happened to her in her past with her mother, and it’s important to show the authenticity of that, but some of the story is quite supernatural too.

The actress says - We’re merging those two worlds and it looks really interesting and different on screen. The series has got a really freaky edge to it but still feels rooted in real life."

Emma’s sister, Phoebe [played by Leanne Best], comes back into her life at the same time, which she finds very triggering – how important is that dynamic in this story?

"Their relationship is a huge element of the series, which was part of the appeal for me as I’m so close to my sister.

There’s a massive underbelly of trauma from the past that tore them apart as young kids, but you still can't break a sisterhood. I love Leanne, and actually we look frighteningly similar on camera – I saw some footage the other day and I thought I was looking at myself, but it was her, we even share some of the same mannerisms."

Insomnia also stars Tom Cullen (Gunpowder, Knightfall (https://www.whattowatch.com/news/knightfall-star-tom-cullen-tragic-sets-burnt-down-540990), Downton Abbey, The Gold) who plays Emma’s loving husband Robert. He is a a hands-on dad and dedicated family man who thinks life is going swimmingly until his wife’s insomnia spirals out of control.

Smylie Bradwell (Wisting) and India Fowler (The Nevers) play Emma and Tom’s children Will and Chloe.

Corinna Marlowe (Hysteria) is Emma’s mother, Patricia.
Leanne Best (Compulsion (https://www.whattowatch.com/watching-guides/compulsion-cast-plot-and-all-about-the-drama-on-gambling-addiction), Bolan’s Shoes) is playing Emma’s estranged sister Phoebe, who
shows up in town without a word of warning.

She is a free spirit who has recently returned to the UK after a spell working in South America. She reappears in her family’s life with big secrets to reveal.

It was creepy and clever, but that last episode did jump the shark a bit ! Not sure why Caroline stabbed the guy in the garden, he was just about to leave. That was a good twist at the very end with Will, though.

The final episode was OTT. Caroline became a one woman killiing machine .

Killed Emma and Phoebe's mum, Rob's friend, her own father , drugged Rob and his daughter [why?] , tried to kill Phoebe , knifed Emma , tried to kill Will .

She looked very shocked when she saw her mum dead but did she do it ?

It was a creepy horror story ! I think whoever wrote it must have a strange mind.

The twist at the end was obvious , poor Will had been blown away by everything that happened .

I always find it hard to believe that a grown adult has cared for a parent, works as a carer but holds it all together to suddenly start killing left right and centre! It was creepy, a small twist and well acted just a bit unbelievable.

Thanks @Blondeshavemorefun , must've missed a bit .

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/07/2025 11:50

Caroline felt guilty as she rushed out after Phoebe ;to run her over and left the glass by accident

I also thought the drugs thing was silly and unecessary. I predicted almost ftom the first episode that Pheobe had come back to cause trouble. But my question is why are the men in these shows always so bloody thick?! Surely beardy man knows his wife and wouldn't be so easily played!

Annoyed me too about the husband just blindly taken in

He wasn't about to leave, he wanted to go in and check on beardy man.

purpleme12 · 22/07/2025 00:20

So I've finished it all

But left with a feeling that I don't get it

So earlier in the series it was like Phoebe was saying that Emma was not right in the head since she was little (that scene with her drawing on the wall in the children's home). And Phoebe was trying to say Emma was a danger. Did Phoebe actually believe that? Because they made it look like she was being manipulative. And that's still how it came across.

Also it seemed like Phoebe just wanted to move in on Emma's family and make a move on the husband.

But then after it was like all these things had been forgotten and were irrelevant...

Then when Phoebe and Emma were talking at the end they were saying the numbers were the time and were a premonition. A premonition of what? I don't get that. Who was predicting what?

And why were they all doing the same things at the same time. I don't get that.

And then they talked about the cycle being broken. What cycle?

butterpuffed · 22/07/2025 08:17

I think Phoebe and Emma meant the numbers were a premonition of times/dates when things were happening, Phoebe being run over , the murders etc.

Possibly that meant that the cycle was over . But they were wrong , as Will was writing down numbers at the end .

This has just started on Irish tv so I am placemarking to read the thread when all episodes are shown.
I just watched Episode 1 last night.
Vicky Mc Clure is a great actress.
Casting Leanne Best as her sister is good - they do look similar.

This is really annoying…only just saw this advertised and went on channel 5 to watch but only got half the episodes on there 🤦‍♀️

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/08/2025 23:41

That’s weird @notevencharging. Usually anything that has been shown on 5 is on the app after

@deeahgwitch did you manage to watch it

i finished watching and couldn’t figure out how the police arrived.
Who called them ?

purpleme12 · 03/09/2025 23:49

I think Emma had called them earlier when she realised who Caroline was and thought her family was in danger. From what I can remember

deeahgwitch · 04/09/2025 08:12

Thank you @purpleme12for responding The police took a long time to come !!
I did go back a bit on my recording but couldn’t find it.
