Hi all,

I'm due a baby soon and looking for recommendations for some TV series to watch in the middle of the night while I'm feeding/rocking/generally feeling like I'm the only person in the world who is awake.

Not necessarily looking for comedies, I've enjoyed these and I'm looking for similar:

Gilmore Girls
Virgin River
Hart of Dixie
Sweet Magnolias
The Durrells
All Creatures Great and Small
Downton Abbey

So I suppose more soapy than comedies.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

3 New York 20-something mates working for a fashion magazine. Absolutely great.

Oh and have you seen Workin’ Moms? Terrible title but smart, brilliantly written women-focused and more soapy than comedy. Brilliant acting.

Delphigirl · 07/06/2025 21:11

You can’t like Gilmore girls and not like workin’ moms 😁

Oh yes! I loved this!

Yep I've seen Working Moms and I agree really well written, some of the story lines broke my heart a bit, which is probably a reflection of just how light I like my TV to be.

Parenthood on Netflix a family saga really cosy tv

Jane the virgin. It's brilliant. Lighthearted, fun and very funny.

Delphigirl · 07/06/2025 21:22

Oh also I recently watched North of North which was totally charming and quite different. The blurb says “North of North, a heartfelt new comedy series from CBC featuring a talented cast of Indigenous actors and set in a charming, fictional Arctic town”

Call the Midwife , Schitts Creek, Anne with an E, The Crown

Hope Street on Iplayer. It's a gentle watch with gorgeous NI scenery I was gutted when I'd watched them all( 4 series)

Plasticwaste · 08/06/2025 02:28

Marvellous Mrs Maisel

BobnLen · 08/06/2025 08:04

Doc Martin on ITVx if you haven't seen it, I use it as my in between show, easy to pick up and put down in between other series.

The Good Ship Murder on 5, Shayne Ward as a singer on a cruise ship going to nice places to solve murders, a bit cheesy but enjoyable

A Place to Call Home on Prime is wonderful, an Australian soapy melodrama set in the 1950s, though once you start watching it you might not be able to stop.

Thanks everyone! Lots for me to look into. I really appreciate you all helping with suggestions!

Bit old but The Good Wife is worth a look if you haven't already seen it.
