Sirens on Netflix

With Julianne Moore is just fab. It’s daft and light weight. It’s quite like White Lotus but then that could be because one of the leads in season 2 is in it. Oh, and Kevin Bacon 😀 I don’t want to praise it too much as I will give the story away, it’s worth watching though. Only five episodes www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2025/may/22/sirens-review-julianne-moore-cult-drama-netflix

Binged it last night and really enjoyed it.

So was the twist that Kiki wasn't quite the baddie?

Hated the ending, it jarred badly.

The scene with Ray and Kiki was weird. Thought at one point she had known him in an earlier life and knew of Simeone and that was what she was so weirdly close with her, sharing a bed etc.

Did The Cliff House really exist?

MrsJamin · 26/05/2025 06:37

Spoilers ahead...

It kept alluding to something fantastical like the bird flying into the window and the cult but then horrid gritty reality of a relationship with your siblings when you've had childhood trauma... And it's meant to be a dark comedy?! Just so weird and all along I had no idea where it was going. The moral of the story is women may seem like they have power but really a rich man can just gets what he wants and women fall in line? Wow so modern and progressive. This is the second Netflix "comedy" that I haven't found funny or liked (The Four seasons being the other one). Makes me think to just stick with British comedy or drama that knows what it is.

hopeishere · 26/05/2025 08:03

Same @MrsJamini was watching it thinking it was a dud. Looked gorgeous. I think this “dramady” format is. Or for me though. Also found the ending really unbelievable.

CharlotteRumpling · 26/05/2025 08:13

SPOILER

The moral, I thought, was that money corrupts everyone and makes them do terrible, desperate things. As did Simone.

Also, the Sirens in Greek myth were beautiful women with the heads of birds who ensnared and trapped men. I found it clever how they turned it around and showed us the duplicity and self pity of men by the end. Plus how Kiki was reviled as a monster, because she was a beautiful and powerful woman, but the real monster was Peter, dressed up as a nice man.

Not meant to be modern or progressive; just realistic and dark, I thought.

I did think Peter swapping wives on the turn of a dime could have been better handled.

ChidisGardener · 26/05/2025 08:36

I did have to read an interview with the writer to realise it was greek myth from point of view of the sirens. Women in pain whom men blame for their problems.

So underlying themes really subtle whilst character actions over the top and particularly the final Simone ones really clunky. I found the final conversation with her sister seemed to have no continuity with any previous views of their relationship.

I was really intrigued by the staff - I suppose the point is they work for Peter so they see no point in respecting the women.

Look up what a siren is, it'll become more apparent what it's about .

I missed who was in White Lotus as well as Sirens, who was it?

LoafofSellotape · 26/05/2025 08:52

It's ok, I googled, of course, totally missed that!

CharlotteRumpling · 26/05/2025 10:10

Oh also, I loved the clothes. Mostly Kiki's floaty monochromes but also Devon's maxis and red dress.

I loved Simone's pink shift dress.

Tbh while I love Meghan Faye her character rubbed me the wrong way from the off. I get she was enraged by the fruit basket as a response to the fathers dementia but to storm Simone at her work place ( especially when you take into account Simone's history with her father). Things like that always piss me off, I get they needed to do it for the story but I kept thinking, she's travelled all that way why wouldn't she just chill at the beach house rather than crash he party.

colonialwomanonthewing · 26/05/2025 14:23

I wish Netflix would find another way to telegraph 'charmingly troubled woman' that isn't 'visible bra under vest top, smudged eyeliner and dark roots'.

drwitch · 26/05/2025 14:32

Spoiler

I thought the bit when it became clear that the dad had abused simone (not just neglet ) and the thought of having to be with him alone prompted her to run along the beach was really powerful - but was not sure whether she was calling to Peter or vice versa?

MrsJamin · 26/05/2025 20:08

You shouldn't have to Google a Greek myth to understand a drama. It was really poor. I feel sorry for the writer, the point was totally missed on me. Apart from the "hilarious" joke of the staff having a WhatsApp group where they bitched about Simone, what was funny? Americans sense of humour is so very different to a British one.

Edited

Completely agree with this.

Plus how happy the staff were when Simone got the sack & then she ended up back & even more in charge!

Thought the cast were all great.

I thought that was funny and I'm not American.

DonnyBurrito · 26/05/2025 22:54

I was so into it at first, it really seemed to be gearing up to something intense... But then... Hmm. Have to say, I seem to only watch A24 type films and true crime these days, so if someone doesn't die or there isn't loads of symbolism and mystery it lands a bit flat for me. I'm sure it's probably a fun watch if you haven't warped your mind.

SheridansPortSalut · 26/05/2025 22:58

I thought it was very weak, despite a good cast and lovely wardrobe and setting. It was a mismash of styles and none of them were done well. It started out as a cult. Then it looked like it was going to be about the supernatural. They tried a bit of comedy in the third or fourth episode. By the end they had just given up altogether and decided to wrap it up without adequately explaining any of the weird shit.

SiobahnRoy · 26/05/2025 23:03

Binged it this afternoon, loved it!

Disturbia81 · 26/05/2025 23:06

So predictable, older wealthy men falling for young woman. I thought it was going to be more supernatural

MrsLargeEmbodied · 27/05/2025 05:24

Only 5 episodes is always appealing
i enjoyed the first episode

Panicmode1 · 27/05/2025 15:21

I binged it over the weekend - it looked good, but really was more style over substance for me because I felt that it petered out and didn't really know what to do with itself to finish. It was entertaining for a rainy Sunday bank holiday but not so amazing that I will be recommending it to anyone TBH.

XelaM · 27/05/2025 15:23

It was so weird and quite rubbish.

The ending was ok.

KitsyWitsy · 27/05/2025 15:31

Oh good, I will download it for an upcoming flight. This and Clarkson's Farm should see me through!

HelenHywater · 27/05/2025 21:19

Well it wasn't brilliant, but was an easy watch.
I was disappointed in the ending (possible spoiler here if you haven't seen it all), it the woman had come up on top rather than Peter. That said, I enjoyed the outfits and admired Meghann Fahy and Julianne Moore.

Disturbia81 · 27/05/2025 21:49

Julianne Moore just gets more bewitching with age
