RTVE (Spanish broadcaster) will request a debate on whether the current Eurovision public vote process is optimal. Several other countries will make the same request.

I’ve been listening to #eurodab most of today.

I watched the whole thing again, and I enjoyed it. Ours really wasn’t too shabby at all.

Red, glad you are okay. I’m not sure why that level of nastiness was aimed at you.

Eurovision threads keep me company on one of the happiest evenings of the year. Having you all there just makes it perfect.

The UK seem to do best with upbeat songs:

  4. 1981 – Bucks Fizz – “Making Your Mind Up”
  5. 1997 – Katrina and the Waves – “Love Shine a Light”

🥈
2nd Place (Runners-up)

  1. 1959 – Pearl Carr & Teddy Johnson – “Sing, Little Birdie”
  2. 1960 – Bryan Johnson – “Looking High, High, High”
  3. 1961 – The Allisons – “Are You Sure?”
  4. 1968 – Cliff Richard – “Congratulations”
  5. 1972 – The New Seekers – “Beg, Steal or Borrow”
  6. 1975 – The Shadows – “Let Me Be the One”
  7. 1977 – Lynsey de Paul & Mike Moran – “Rock Bottom”
  8. 1988 – Scott Fitzgerald – “Go”
  9. 1993 – Sonia – “Better the Devil You Know”
  10. 1998 – Imaani – “Where Are You?”
  11. 2022 – Sam Ryder – “Space Man”

Yes yes! That would be a win in the bag.

Agree that considering there are so many performances, he might well not be able to do it though (theoretically of course) Yes to James Blunt to!

@ArtTheClownIsNotAMime Spice girls would also be strong contenders, but their lives are all so different I couldn't see them reuniting for Eurovision, sadly.

@OublietteBravo I'd be happy to see Sonia gave another go!

Yeah we did try Blue but Blue were...Blue, although 5th in public vote is still great!

Yep. I reckon there's going to be some desire for changes. Yesterday was close to the the reefs for the EBU although any such changes could now quite rightly be perceived as discriminatory. They ought to have taken measures to address this possible conundrum beforehand.

France was meh in the staging. (Someone has a job which involves working out how to make fake sand! How long did they take experimenting with various materials until the decided cork was the best option and how did they get the right size particles and enough of it for the set? That's some job!)

Yeah I think the less said about Nemo the better. What's the phrase about if you haven't got anything nice to say?

He was incredible last year. I didn't want him to win. But once Joost was out having seen the performance I really really couldn't fault him winning. Seeing it on screen doesn't do it justice for the staging and the energy of it. The stage hands and camera work are incredible.

However decided on it as well and making it look very pretty then did manage like Graham said make it look like she was having bad dirrahea..guessing that wasn't their aim.

I'm perfectly fine. It hasn't bothered me at all. Just more annoying than anything. I've been more bothered on here by other stuff in the past. Don't worry about me. Other people have really shown themselves up.

Anyway, there apparently a number of references to Joost in Eurodab - it wasn't just the shouting of Europapa. The blue outfits and dance are references and the artwork for it features stars in their eyes...

If that's true it's really sweet. Käärijä has now worked with Joost, Baby Lasagne and Tommy Cash. He also had a real bromance with Bojan from Joker's Out (Slovenia).

I think they were probably going for this look with 'sand' as 'fire'.

But it didn't work.

I was terrified she would get the cork sand stuff in her mouth and literally choke!

They already tried Blue...

We need one man ; strong voice who can emote and belt. Preferably operatically.

In this case there is only one man for the job....Michael Ball!

I'm thinking Runrig meets Red Hot Chilli Pipers meets Primal Scream meets Marillion.

= that Scottish arcordian player Rumac from BGT! I'm sure with a bit of vocal training and a decent song he'd be alright!

NewAgeNewMe · 18/05/2025 23:42

Agree staging has overtaken the songs somewhat. So my tuppence is cut staging and have the singers sing in their own language. Think that may even up the field a bit.

If involved in a conflict/war then unable to compete, so can’t have a situation like last night. Harsh on countries like Ukraine though.

Yes it is.

I mentioned on another thread that I (living in the US and a follower of several Holocause education accounts/ organisations) saw a good few well produced ads in my feed exhorting me to vote for Israel in the fortnight before Eurovision.

I was astonished and not at all happy to see the ads. I think they are a subversion of the spirit of the competition. Call me naive if you like.

I never vote because it costs me to do so outside of Europe. But clearly someone thought I would be willing to put my money where my mouth is, so to speak.

I would like to know where exactly in the world the votes for Israel came from.
I would like to know who paid for the ads and how much was paid.

I'd like to know how.much Eurovision made from the global voting.

I agree with the Spanish broadcaster that questions need to be asked, and I'd go so far as to suggest a rethink of the global popular voting.

IdaPrentice · 18/05/2025 19:26

Really interesting to see the scores broken down as above, thanks. What strikes me is that the public really don't vote for the Big Five or host country - none of them got more than 100 in the televote, and most a lot less - look at Italy and France, neither of them scored highly, despite being in the top of the jury votes. So that's something that counts against the UK too.

I disagree.

Italy , France, and Switzerland all did well. I've added all three to my Eurovision playlist, which is neither here not there, but I'll enjoy them as I drive.

Germany never does well unless they send an undeniably good song. They seem to miss the zeitgeist most of the time.

Spain has done well in recent years. This year their song sucked and their singer was just one more belter with big thighs not really connecting with the audience on screen or live.

The rest of the world counts as one country for voting purposes. So they must have pulled a lot of votes in the participating countries too.

I had about 5 chat groups in the go, and there was absolutely no mention of Israel. I know its not a huge sample but there must be some representation so no idea how we gave 12 points to Israel. Plus we tried voting on mobile and landline and couldn't get through to vote throughout the night. All very very dodgy. My son said,.and I haven't fact checked this, but the only country that didn't give Israel any public votes was Croatia....where you need your government ID to buy a SIM card......

Oh no you can't take down the Ball! I saw him last Oct in Les Mis and he was fab. His voice not quite what it was but he can still carry a tune and a performance. His mate Alfie though was spectacular. (I'm only joking about having him in Eurovision 🤣)

Gundogday · 19/05/2025 07:10

Does that apply to the purchase of e sim cards too?

The Eurovision subreddit had to be shut down on Saturday night - probably due to the sort of posters who've been deleted on this thread and the last one. There's a discussion on there currently about what steps can be taken to address the mass televoting that allegedly happened on Saturday.

Buttheywereonlysatellites51 · 19/05/2025 07:27

I'm quite late to this thread, but I have to say I really enjoyed Eurovision this year. There were some really great songs from Italy and France and I thought Luxembourg had a really good song; I was surprised it scored so poorly.

One thing that struck me is how many countries sang in their native language. A few years ago, the majority of the songs were in English and everything was starting to sound the same. Apparently this year there were 20 languages!

Zonder · 19/05/2025 07:28

@ilovesooty I missed that posters got deleted. What kind? Thanks.
