OK. Please yourself. Several people, including posters involved in music disagree with you.

You're putting their hopes up it's cruel. I have heard better groups over the years. My children was in shock they were taking the piss out of them. I think many young people today are into K-pop.

ilovesooty · 18/05/2025 19:35

I watched the recording of the Big Eurovision Party this week. It was lovely to see artists respectful of each other, an audience focused on the music and a real atmosphere of joy.

Crikeyalmighty · 18/05/2025 19:40

@C8H10N4O2 I describe it as all fur coat and no knickers and yes it has gone very much that way sadly

I vote we ignore the derailers.

Who do we think had the best staging?

Sweden. It was simple, clever and didn't have seizure inducing strobe lights.

Yeah Sweden's staging probably was the best overall.

If we had to bring a British performer out of retirement/an long established band for next year's who would you choose?

I think I'd like to see someone edgy like Jay kay from Jamiroquai

All Saints?

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 18/05/2025 20:07

I liked Sweden's staging too. I think Estonia might have been my favourite, loved the fake stage invasion and the wriggly dancing and the serious security men.

Surely Lewis Capaldi could own Eurovision? Sadly, I think he may not be up to it.

Ooh tough one. I'm often out of step with Eurovision fans so not sure my choices would do well at all.

The Spice Girls? 😃

Piggywaspushed · 18/05/2025 20:14

They already tried Blue...

We need one man ; strong voice who can emote and belt. Preferably operatically.

Piggywaspushed · 18/05/2025 20:14

LOL James Blunt.

My takeaways are

  1. Baby Lasagne, with Käärijä, was the best thing about eurovision for the second year in a row. Shame he wasn't even in the running to win this year. Maybe joint country battles are a way to go 🤔.
  1. Sweden were my favourite and will be humming the sauna song for some time.
  1. The kids preferred the espresso macchiato song, showing that there are different tastes even in the same house.
  1. UK was just meh. The costumes were odd, the tune was mismatched/recycled and they spent a fair time with a fake bed hiding them from half of the audience. If we want to do better, we need to send a better song. It worked for Sam Ryder, who happily seems to be making a good career from it now.
  1. I want Baby Lasagne back next year!

I’ve been following him since ESC last year and am hooked. He’s just released his first album and finished a 21 show tour over 16 countries, and will be playing several festivals throughout Europe this summer including the Edinburgh Fringe and 2000 Trees in Cheltenham.
Gorgeous man, and so humble and down to earth. His social media is so funny.

SwedishEdith · 18/05/2025 20:18

Marti Pellow. He did well on The Masked Singer.

I was thinking we never see anyone belting out a really upbeat catchy song. Like a Rick Astley Never Gonna Give You Up type song. He'd be a good option as well.

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 18/05/2025 20:18

I adore Baby Lasagna's "And I." Such a fun song.

I don't think it'll be another operatic man next year. It goes in cycles: someone wins, everyone copies, the audience vote for something entirely different and on it goes.

Piggywaspushed · 18/05/2025 20:24

I reckon we just sneak Katrina and The Waves back in. They can do Walking On Sunshine to mix it up a bit.

Gundogday · 18/05/2025 20:28

I’d like to go for a rousing tune, maybe a traditional Scottish song, fiddles and all. Someone like Skerryvore (or an up and coming traditional band) .

Or a lilting Welsh ballad, something paired back.

Agree. We've been saying for a few years we should go regional, or Welsh or Scottish. Set a scene, tell an unexpected story.

Gundogday · 18/05/2025 18:39

My thoughts on last night, was that it wasn’t really a memorable year. There wasn’t really a standout winner. Austria passed me by during the show, but I actually quite liked it when he re-sang it. However, it was no better or worse than others.

I much preferred the less showy songs last night - Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, France, rather than the blond-in-leotard brigade. I also noticed there was only one band during the whole evening. In some acts, the stage effects dwarfed the performance.

Regarding Remember Monday, I actually thought they did a decent job and performed well. Their song came across well as well. Glad they scored a reasonable amount of points, and got a coveted twelve.

There where at least 3 'bands' in the final

Lithuania with the band Katarsis (terrible)
Ukraine with the band Ziferblat (meh)
and
Portugal with the band NAPA (terrible)

OublietteBravo · 18/05/2025 20:35

We tried Bonnie Tyler and Englebert Humperdinck - without a great deal of success. Perhaps Sonia could have another shot? She’s a similar age to Justyna.

Apparently Blue came fifth in the public vote.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 18/05/2025 20:51

It just all felt a bit flat! No one was wow they're going to definitely win. Our song was okay but there was a lot going on and just felt more like a musical song.

Loved the actual stage itself however and the lights.

The interval seemed.to drag and again less going on it seemed to other years. Nemo performance seemed more like a live breakdown. Even Graham did seem as chatty/sarcastic

France however..whoever suggested that sand coming from behind her..woops!! Made it more memorable however.

Blue? Not Blue? ( If you know the story you know the story).

Best staging. Well the set and use of props for Sweden was excellent. You can't knock it. The screens and the Christmas trees and the lumberstore tripping into a sauna.

I think Estonia was simple but well done with security guards and 'stage invasion'. The first time we saw it for the semi we were like 'this is part of the act, isn't it?'

Luxembourg. I loved it. But I couldn't put it in my top ten. Ironically it will be one of the ones I'll play in the car relentlessly. (Unlike Baby Lasagne for example). Just cos it's fun and light. At the start of it where she looks like she's in a house but she's actually lying on the floor was impressive.

The other one with great staging, but it looks really simple, is the Netherlands. It was all done on camera work and being in the frame. It's surprisingly hard to do, especially with numerous people. I think Switzerland tried to do similar but it just didn't work for me.

Iceland was also great. It was super cheesy and unoriginal in some ways but the choreography was great (there's the bit in the boat and one punches all the others and they domino.) Just pure fun.

I need to mention Australia at this point. Their staging was fab. The costume change brilliant but I think it came at the expense of the vocals.

France was meh in the staging. (Someone has a job which involves working out how to make fake sand! How long did they take experimenting with various materials until the decided cork was the best option and how did they get the right size particles and enough of it for the set? That's some job!)

Yeah I think the less said about Nemo the better. What's the phrase about if you haven't got anything nice to say?

He was incredible last year. I didn't want him to win. But once Joost was out having seen the performance I really really couldn't fault him winning. Seeing it on screen doesn't do it justice for the staging and the energy of it. The stage hands and camera work are incredible.

See. I know I'm being irritating, but the Austria staging was right on theme with the lyrics!

This is the first time on the Eurovision threads that I feel out of sync with most of the posters. Austria was bloody good!

One other thing is English is lingua Franca so I feel our song lyrics should have more depth. When other singers sing in another language I don't always understand it. Only the gist. So I concentrate on the beat more. But most people listening will understand English. From that standpoint our song theme was a bit shallow imo. What were they singing about that was meaningful? If it's not meaningful, it should at least be fun. Like Sweden's, but it didn't quite tick that box either.

I agree! Gave me goosebumps. Such an amazing voice and deserved to win.

I agree Marti Pellow can definitely deliver a tune, with gravitas!

He also reminds me of Doctor Who for some reason. Think he would embody that role well
