Buffy -what age?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer
What age would you let your child watch it?
I have watched it and loved it but not for many years! Wondered if anyone had watched it more recent and had it fresh in their head. So could give me more of a detailed view
I've looked and there are certain episodes rated 15.
My child is nearing 12

I know it is a long time ago now, but my sister had terrible nightmares at 11 after watching it the first time round. Don’t know whether the effects have stood up well enough to have the same effect now.

BobbyBiscuits · 16/05/2025 20:08

I guess about 8-9. If they were interested. It's a 'teen' show which means it's really appealing or aimed at kids of about 8 plus I think.
RIP Michelle who played her sister x

We started watching all of Buffy (and Angel) with our DC from about the age of 11/12 but we watched max 1 or 2 episodes per week rather than bingeing so by the time the more mature themes happened, DC was old enough. Highly recommend you start soon, there's some really important lessons about how to cope with a non-vampire-filled ordinary adolescence in among the fun stuff.

purpleme12 · 16/05/2025 20:13

@BobbyBiscuits Mmm I'm not sure it's aimed at people that young considering most of the episodes are rated a 12 (some higher)

Ok that's interesting

So you think it was ok at this age

I looked up when it started and it came out when I would have been 12 and I think I watched it from the start when it was on Tele

So I would have been 12 too

Seasons 1-3 ok for 10+ id say but later seasons are a lot more sex heavy.

stayathomer · 16/05/2025 20:17

I’d guess 11/12 but actually none of mine liked it! Both said it looked old and unrealistic! I was gutted and told a girl in work in her late twenties and she said ‘why would they like it, it looks like it’s aged horribly, it’s from your time and it’s great you loved it, but I didn’t think it was well done. I couldn’t even speak after😅😅😅

I used to love buffy! I can't think how old is was when I watched it though. It was when it originally came out if that makes me show my age?! Think I was around 12?
That episode with the gentlemen who float silently along is genuinely terrifying though and would still scare me as an adult

stayathomer · 16/05/2025 20:22

purpleme12

I conceded that the first one was ridiculously unrealistic and tried to get 15yo to watch the second one and then a later one that was much scarier too. Nothing!!! 😭😅

MrsMattSantos · 16/05/2025 20:23

DD who is now 14 loves Buffy! But I didn’t let her watch it till she was 12, as there are some fairly mature themes.
But I rewatched it all with her - having watched it first time round back in the day - and was surprised how well it held up. Yes the special effects are a bit hokey by today’s standards but I think it’s still a great show. And a possible reboot as well now 😁

Justploddingonandon · 16/05/2025 20:24

I’d say it’s somewhere between Doctor Who and Stranger Things in terms of scariness. I’d let my 12 year old if he wanted to, but not shown any interest. I do suspect it might not appeal to modern teens.

JaneGrint · 16/05/2025 20:30

We let DC1 watch the first 3 seasons last year when he was 12, and he enjoyed watching them.

But I told him he’d have to stop there for now. It starts to get more mature themes once Buffy starts college in season 4.

HumphreyCobblers · 16/05/2025 20:33

I watched with my eleven year old and it was a great experience. We still share an interest and await the new series with anticipation and trepidation!

First series I found a bit hard to rewatch as production values were not the best and the show didn't come into real focus until season 2 but dd LOVED the first series so much.

Buffy was very important to me and I am so glad she loves it too.

Soubriquet · 16/05/2025 20:34

My dd was watching it at 10! I had her block her ears and hide her eyes when Spike tried to rape Buffy, but apart from that she watched it all

LottieMary · 16/05/2025 20:36

14/15? The frat couple of seasons aren’t too bad but may give nightmares depending on sensitivity but it suffers a bit the Harry Potter issue in that later seasons are definitely much more adult - rape, coercive control, abusive relationships all subtext in early seasons but become much more textual/explicit later on esp the Buffy-spike relationship. If you’d watch one a year it’s be ok but if an 11yo is likely to binge the whole thing I’m not sure

4amisnotmorning · 16/05/2025 20:39

Watched it with DS when he was 14/15. He loved it. Definitely gets more grown up. We started when he was 12 or 13 and he liked it but he was so distraught by the Joyce episode it took him over a year to come back to it!!
It has dated and you have to be willing to laugh fondly at the first season effects but its great. Seminal tv show.

4amisnotmorning · 16/05/2025 20:43

Any other teen classic recommendations welcomed? Wondering if he’ll like Veronica Mars. We tried Alias which I recalled being fun and he hated it.

CrossPurposes · 16/05/2025 20:59

We watched it with our son when he was about 12 but mutually stopped watching together around mid season 4. Too much Riley! He caught various episodes afterwards but didn't like the Buffy and Spike relationship.

Dd has watched and loved Dollhouse.

I tried her with Firefly and she hated it (she’s going up for adoption. Don’t worry).

She’s watched some Dark Angel and enjoyed that.

David Boreanaz was my teen crush ❤️

Scorchio84 · 17/05/2025 03:12

Actually @purpleme12 my OH has a 14 year old & he'd be bored mindless... not enough Marvel explosions

Dark Angel with Jessica Alba, not Angel

Radra · 17/05/2025 10:28

I think season 1 would be fine for a 12 year old but I think some of the stuff in season 2 - the way Angel turns after sleeping with Buffy, the murder of Jenny Calendar etc - might be better for a 14 year old
