Why were so many social media influencers invited to the BAFTAs?

It seems, judging by my insta feed every social media influencer under the sun has been invited to the BAFTAS. Am I missing something? Thought it was a bit like the British Oscars. Is there now a category for influencers?

It is a way of the BAFTAs getting a shitload more publicity which doesn't cost them anything.

BAFTAS are a charity.

So they constantly need new funding as they don't receive any from the government.

So they need as much influence out there as possible and social media influencers can reach hundreds of thousands or millions in a single post so it makes perfect sense.

The OSCARS isn't a charity and receives a lot of it's funding from other means so no, the BAFTAS were never the same as the OSCARS.
