A one off drama for an hour this Thursday

Would you go to jail for your child? Channel 5’s The Trial asks the ultimate parental question

If you were held legally responsible for a crime your child committed, how would you feel? Angry? Conflicted? Betrayed?

This emotional dilemma takes centre stage in the upcoming Channel 5 drama (https://www.yours.co.uk/leisure/celebrity-tv/channel-5-dramas/), The Trial.

Similarly to Netflix's Adolescence (https://www.yours.co.uk/leisure/celebrity-tv/adolescence-netflix/), which focused on the aftermath of a 13-year-old boy being arre
sted for murder, this also explores the effects of a crime committed by a teenager, except it will be the parents who are questioned.

Set in the near future in the UK, the new drama (https://www.yours.co.uk/leisure/celebrity-tv/new-tv-dramas/) imagines a society transformed by a radical new law called Milligan's Law, where parents are held directly accountable for the actions of their children - it’s not just the crime that's examined, but the entire fabric of a family’s life.

Couple Dione and David Sinclair are thrust into a nightmarish legal battle when their teenage daughter, Teah, commits a serious crime," the synopsis tells us.

"Under a radical new law, parents are no longer just bystanders in their children's actions - they are directly accountable.

Dione and David now face relentless interrogation on every aspect of their parenting, lifestyle, and past decisions. If found guilty, they could face life behind bars."

Who's in the cast of The Trial on Channel 5?
• Claire Skinner (Outnumbered, Coma) as Dione Sinclair
• Ben Miles (The Capture (https://www.yours.co.uk/leisure/celebrity-tv/the-capture-series-3/), Douglas is Cancelled) as David Sinclair
• Saoirse-Monica Jackson (Derry Girls, This City Is Ours (https://www.yours.co.uk/leisure/celebrity-tv/this-city-is-ours/)) as inter
rogator Sarah Willis

• Jaz Hutchins (Black Ops, The Return) as Lieutenant Simons

• India Fowler (The Agency,
Insomnia (https://www.yours.co.uk/leisure/celebrity-tv/vicky-mcclure-insomnia/)
) as Teah Sinclair

Interesting concept, I wonder how much knife crime and other delinquent behaviour would lessen if parents had to take responsibility for 'my child would never do they I dragged them up proper'

I think it will be very interesting. So weird only one hour

Just watched this. So messed up on all counts I have no words!

The girl seems like she has mental heath issues to me. Although neither of the parents have come out of it looking too good either.

But wtaf is a punitive coma ffs?!? She is 17. Only just a minor. She confesses. But the parents still end up going to prison for life possibly?!? So 3 people punished for the actions of 1?

What happened to the age of criminal responsibility being 10 years old in the future 2035?

That ' inquisitor' woman was enough to piss anyone off. I wanted to swear at the TV the way she had decided they were already guilty before even speaking to them.

Awful awful awful. I really hope to God that the judicial system will not be like that in 10 years time!

Just watched this. Really scary. The punitive coma thing is horrific.

purpleme12 · 09/05/2025 22:17

It was very sci fi

I don't think it's going to happen!
