Half way through House MD and I still can't get over how flawless Hugh Laurie's accent is.

Also thought Andrew Lincoln's was great in The Walking Dead.

Noteworthy:
Renée Zellweger in Bridget Jones.
Sean Austin in Lord of the Rings.
Alan Tudyk in A Knight's Tale.
Kate Winslet is anything she does.
David Tenant (great English accent, yes I know he's Scottish).
Will Poulter (didn't realise he was British for a long time).

Opinions and other suggestions welcome.

Idris Elba does a great American accent.

hellocleveland · 23/04/2025 15:36

Greys anatomy cast members, Camilla Luddington (who plays Jo Wilson) and Kevin McKidd (Owen Hunt).
I saw an interview once where Camilla said she always spoke with the American accent while in the studio, whereas Owen could switch between Scottish and American in an instant.

For a long time I didn’t realise Charlie Heaton (Jonathan Byers in Stranger Things) was actually British.

Another notable one is Gwyneth Paltrow (Emma/Sliding doors).

Crikeyalmighty · 23/04/2025 15:37

Jason Isaac’s was very good in white lotus

BobbyBiscuits · 23/04/2025 15:46

I think that British/Aus actors are better at doing US accents than vice versa. But I guess I'm British born so hear when it slips.
Jason Isaacs in the most recent white Lotus. Kept dropping into Australian?
Margot Robbie's American accent is good from some films.

TheWiseGoose · 23/04/2025 15:50

Kelly Reilly in yellowstone.

GoBazGo · 23/04/2025 15:55

Not UK but Irish doing USA
Barry Keoghan
Colin Farrell

Mydadsbirthday · 23/04/2025 15:58

Lindsey Lohan in the Parent Trap, not perfect but really charming!

Also Jennifer Ehle both in pride and prejudice and the Camomile Lawn. Isn't she American?

Lampzade · 23/04/2025 16:12

Aaron Pierre -Rebel Ridge did a decent American accent

Hugh Laurie’s American accent was so good that Americans didn’t even realise that he was
British

The sign of a great American accent I suppose, when Americans don't know it's not real!

Jodie Comer in Killing Eve did a great many accents including American and Andrew Lincoln in The Walking Dead, the crew thought he was American for a while during filming as he didn’t break back to his English accent

I LOVE Andrew Lincoln in TWD. Have never seen Killing Eve though, got about half an hour into episode 1 and was bored.

I’m not bad at placing accents (guessed an Irish actress in Black Dove was from Kilkenny, she was from Carlow- what’s 20 miles between friends?).
Barry Keoghan in the Banshees of Inisherrin had a perfect Donegal accent and he’s as Dublin as they come.
Luke Evans, Gaston in the live action Beauty and the Beast is British- I had no idea!
And Ralph Fiennes as the Suffolk Hoo archeologist had a perfect regional accent.

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 23/04/2025 20:43

Jodie Comer in everything

Whatsgoingonherethenagain · 23/04/2025 20:55

Renee Zellweger? Really? I thought her accent was unbearable. I can’t bring myself to watch the new Bridget jones film because of it.

jennifer ehle I didn’t realise was not British! Although a quick google shows her mum was British and she was brought up in both
much like Gillian Anderson and Anya Taylor-Joy, who both can switch flawlessly as well.

i think Americans find it harder as they don’t grow up with “accents” like we do, or even think they have an accent. So the natural ear isn’t there.

Flybee · 23/04/2025 21:13

Because I'm currently rewatching The Handmaid's Tale, Max Minghella, O-T Fagbenle and Yvonne Strahovski.

What accent does Luke Evans have in the Beauty and the Beast film? He's Welsh :)

Gillian Anderson always confuses me - she does both perfectly.

I've never worked out if she's British or American.

Boopear · 23/04/2025 22:12

Idris Elba and Dominic West in The Wire. Apparently Dominic didn’t raise Idris was British for ages 😂

Born in the US but moved to the UK aged about 2 and stayed here till she was 11 when she went back to the States but came back regularly for holidays.

That's what I thought. She's phenomenal, loved her the most in 'The Fall'

Agree with this I watched the wire before I saw appropriate adult and I was so stunned that ‘fred’ was mcnulty

The wire was so good wasn’t it ?I need to watch it again

Apparently Kate Winslet was spot on in Mare of East Town. I cannot remember now where in America it was set, but there was lots of praise when it came out because it is quite a nuanced accent that lots of actors fail to get and she nailed it. Like the UK, the USA has loads of regional accents so not knowing them all, it is really hard to say who does them well. I live in a big city in West Yorkshire and there are a few differing different accents (if you live here you know- particularly because there are generations of people settled from Pakistan, Bangladesh and India- all very distinct but to the outsider Yorkshire). The next city literally runs up to my city boarder and they have a slightly diffent accent.

ScrambledSmegs · 23/04/2025 23:23

Renée Zellweger as Bridget Jones. It's really spot on for a certain type of woman who worked in publishing in 90s London. In fact I think she spent a month or so 'working' at a real publishing house as research for the role.

Idris Elba in The Wirel. Dominic West is shaky in retrospect though.

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 23/04/2025 23:28

@willstarttomorrow was set in Pennsylvania
