Of all the things the world doesn't need, surely to god it doesn't need yet another re working Pride and Prejudice. In a totally left field casting move, battle axe Mrs Bennet will be played by... Olivia Colman.

But for added unexpectedness, they're thrilled to announce the casting of a non binary actor in the role of Lizzie B. It's that wearying tentpole who played Princess Diana in The Crown yet whose gender remains shrouded in mystery. They said they is thrilled to be bringing P&P to a 'new generation'. Of seven year olds, presumably.

The smelling salts! I'm having a faint!

Emma Corrin? The young WOMAN who 'identifies as non binary'. God how terribly fascinating

Anyway we don't need another P&P FGS!

Olivia Coleman could be a good Mrs Bennett.
The character isn't a battle axe. She's desperate to get her daughters married (unlike her husband, she recognises the financial hardship that will be their reality if they don't marry well because the estate is entailed) and this causes her to behave in ways that cause great embarrassment to her elder daughters.

No idea who the other actress is because I didn't watch the Crown but having a woman who pretends not to be a woman to play the part of Elizabeth Bennett is ridiculous.
EB is such a great character, a very strong, witty woman - and sex plays an important part in the story.

I saw Emma Corrin on stage in London in The Seagull, she was spectacular. The only supposedly non-binary things about her could be the short hair and the trousers, otherwise she was very feminine. But then of course plenty of women have a similar haircut and clothing style without rebranding themselves. I don't see the problem in her playing Elizabeth Bennett, she is still a woman.

ETA oops wrong season of the crown

'Emma Corrin wasn’t Diana'

She was - she played young Diana when she first met Charles. Elizabeth Debicki played Diana in the 90s

FoxedByACat · 11/04/2025 16:50

I think OC will be a great Mrs B

I am assuming while emma corrin may be non binary she won't be playing Elizabeth as a non binary person. Lets hope not anyway!

Yep - sorry - edited - it was ED (excellent!) who had stuck in my mind as she was in it A Lot!

Agree with @FoxedByACat - no reason to think that EC won’t play Elizabeth Bennett as a woman.

westisbest1982 · 12/04/2025 08:12

Wow, such a deeply original casting decision there - Olivia Colman as Mrs Bennett. The whole thing sounds tedious.

cariadlet · 13/04/2025 18:03

I ended up googling Emma Corrin because I hadn't heard of her before this thread. Off screen, she seems a bit of an idiot - full of TQ+ nonsense and non binary bullshit.

But I'm working my way through the new series of Black Mirror and have just watched Hotel Reverie. She's excellent in it and I can imagine her being a very good Lizzie Bennett.
