Hello all
I couldn't see another thread but it looks like this starts on Thursday 10th April.

What will be the themes this year? Banquettets aplenty? Grumpy contestants coming on to the thread to tell us off for not being kind? Hideous colour combinations?

Who know what joys await us!

I’m quite surprised Ese went, it felt like he was being set up as one of the main characters the way it was filmed so I thought it might be one of those “journeys” where he learned his lessons and improved week on week.

Didn’t like the model’s peach/orange room at all. Why would you do that?!

Well they either give someone a lot of air time on the first because they are going to be a main character or they are going home.

placemats · 10/04/2025 21:30

Checking in. Hopefully someone will do a checked wallpaper later. I think Ese was the right person to go, but the margin between the last three was gauze paper slim.

You will in a youth hostel.

I stay in youth hostels and you shouldn't be tramping mud etc around the place

YouFetidMoppet · 10/04/2025 21:36

Referring back to earlier comment about the lady who was cockney, I thought she sounded posh at first, but she seems quite down to earth. I take my Amanda comment back. The flat cap man still looks like a James Blunt/Professor Brian Cox hybrid though. That is meant to be a compliment.

Most of the rooms were pretty good. I really thought the winning room would be dingy but it worked.

I stay in youth hostels too and agree. If they are muddy, you'll take them off when you come in - but you will still need somewhere to put them in your room.

Before turning yourself orange with a rusty towel 😂

Maybe Donald Trump has a corrugated iron towel wall. I think he'd go for an instant tan towel each morning.

Davros · 10/04/2025 23:07

I can’t remember any of their names yet. I didn’t really like any of the rooms. There were some awful colours, rubbish bed curtains and naff nick nacks. Whichever one is supposed to be inspired by the 1970s, you could’ve fooled me. I didn’t see anything that referenced the 1970s and I remember it well!

Hallelujah2020 · 11/04/2025 07:51

The poor paintwork was annoying me, bits of white showing through everywhere

Ellmau · 11/04/2025 07:57

I think it was the hints of orange which were supposed to evoke the 70s, @Davros.

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 11/04/2025 08:59

Has Alan always presented this ? Trying to remember who it was before.

He’s presented it for a while now.
Before him it was a man and woman whose names I forget, but they were both designers rather than presenters.

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 11/04/2025 09:01

Just googled it was Ferne Cotton, I vaguely remember mow

I always notice this! Once you see it, you can't unsee it and it's everywhere

The edging is always appalling! I can remember one where they did the worst job around a fireplace. The judge was standing in front of it and they would have had to strip the fire place to get it off.
If you look round things like door frames, skirting, light switchs or any form of cutting in its terrible. One of the doors last night they painted some of the hinges but not not all of them

I'm assuming lots of the people that get a quick makeover type programs must have to go round and paint again. Some of it you couldnt leave and sometimes the backs of things are clearly not painted etc

8dateslater · 11/04/2025 12:35

They also always leave a big gap oaround the carpets etc so the bottom is always wobbly.

It must be so annoying to fix but they seem to not be marked down for it

Chrysanthemum5 · 11/04/2025 12:59

They never give them enough time to do a good job. If it were just one or two of them leaving poor edges or missing bits then that would be ok but they all do it so there just can't be enough time

I wonder what happens to the rooms afterwards? There were so many things that were impractical for a youth hostel room, not to mention unsafe! Wobbly tables, mirror hanging loose on the back of a door, flimsy furniture... Does somebody have to go in and completely re-do the rooms before they can take guests again?

Giggorata · 11/04/2025 17:41

I thought that Ese's looked the worst because he didn't do a good job finishing the bunk curtains, so I think the right person went home, if someone must. I agree, it's a shame because the first person out doesn't get the chance to change.
I was amused to hear Michelle advise someone to do more shopping and less creating!
I quite like the so called seventies one, the boat mural one and the corrugated iron one. I just wish it wasn't always done in such a rush, so that the finish isn't good, as someone observed upthread.

8dateslater · 11/04/2025 17:45

@Chrysanthemum5 it also must be why they rarely mention it. Sometimes people will get told off for a rough finish but rarely
@LillyPJ i remember some of the previous series posters were able to find the hotel rooms etc and lots were mysteriously absent presumed painted over and lots were heavily adapted

I'm not sure you could getaway with that plastic pot light fitting health and safety wise for example.

my specialist hatred of the terrible paint jobs must need to be covered up or corrected. Previously some of the interior design things eg fire places, fixtures and decorations etc would probably have needed to be chucked or at least somehow stripped because of them having paint on. I can't remember if it was the oar but something wooden in this weeks had obvious paint on that you'd probably not keep

ChompandaGrazia · 11/04/2025 17:50

The thing is that they don’t do the painting I guess. They have people do if for them. They are marked for the ideas and stuff they make rather than the quality of the finish.

But the fact that people do the painting for them makes it even more puzzling that it's not done well! Those employed to paint etc must have some skills at DIY. I'm a complete amateur but I'd definitely do a better job of painting the skirting boards so there's not a white gap next to the carpet!

Dan Hopwood and Sophie Robinson? It was a better show IMO.

Yes, I agree. They waste too much time now on the very unfunny bits (like that YMCA/YHA thing) which add nothing to the programme. It used to be a bit more serious and more focused on the designs.

MrsBird03 · 11/04/2025 23:56

I liked the digital image the guy did, but yes to the poor painting! I appreciate that it is time limited, but surely a shoddy job is noticeable.

Having said that, someone I went to school with her Mum had gone on a makeover show...I don't think it was changing rooms, but had that vibe and for some reason Carol Vordeman is in my head, anyway the makeover team had painted around the furniture, parts of the walls were still tacky so soft furnishings etc. were ruined, certain pieces of new furniture was thrown out and new pieces brought in....but a week later all the new pieces had to be returned or paid for. The community really had to rally around after and i remember lots of donations for paint, furniture etc. It was awful, as I think the family had gone on the show as the Mum had been left with a long list of DIY projects, but limited funds in the firstplace. Its selling the dream as to what your space could look like, but what you see isn't what you are left with.

Halsall · 12/04/2025 08:25

Tom Dyckhoff was the overall presenter of the ‘old’ Interior Design Challenge, and as PPs said, Dan Hopwood and Sophie Robinson were the two resident experts. It was a vastly better show and it’s often repeated on some channel or other - still interesting and entertaining to watch.

My heart sank at the Alan Carr ‘YMCA’ sketch - inevitably they’ll start doing those cringingly unfunny intros like the ones on Bake-Off and the pottery show. Why anyone in their right mind thinks anyone’s amused by them, I’ll never know.

BestIsWest · 12/04/2025 20:14

I’m going to differ and say I love the Alan Carr bits. They are terrible but make me smile.
