AUSTIN - bbc 1 Fri 930pm - TV PACE NO SPOILERS

The BBC has confirmed the release date for Austin, an Australian comedy drama series starring Ben Miller and Sally Phillips.

The series premiered Down Under back in June of last year, and will finally be coming to UK on Friday, April 4.

the first episode will air on BBC One at 9.30pm.

Julian heads down under for a book signing tour and Austin finally gets to meet his father

He was conceived when his Aussie mum was in London many years ago

Not long after, Julian's neurodivergent son that he never knew existed – the titular Austin – turns up out of the blue.

The show stars Miller as children's author Julian Hartswood, who has seemingly ruined the career of both himself and his illustrator wife Ingrid, played by Phillips, after posting something he shouldn't have on social media.

Julian wonders if embracing his child and building a 'modern' nuclear family – all captured by a documentary crew, of course – will be his ticket out of cancellation jail.

He'll soon learn, however, that Austin isn't the pushover he expected, while Ingrid isn't exactly on his side either.

As turns out Austin was conceived after they had started dating
Alongside Death in Paradise (https://www.digitalspy.com/death-in-paradise/) actor Miller and Bridget Jones (https://www.digitalspy.com/bridget-jones/) star Phillips, the series also stars
Michael Theo, the breakout star of reality series
Love on the Spectrum Australia (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/reality-tv/a33511027/love-on-the-spectrum-autism/)
, as Austin.

I’ve been looking forward to this since I saw trailers for it on Instagram. I loved Michael on Love on the Spectrum. I’ve got it set to series record as well.

Not sure if Austin is autistic

today is waad - world autism awareness day

While autism is a specific neurodevelopmental condition, "neurodivergent" is a broader term encompassing various neurological differences, including autism, ADHD, and dyslexia.

So, autistic people are neurodivergent, but not all neurodivergent individuals are autistic.

I'm old. I remember Sally Phillips from Smack the Pony. The sketch with Doon Mackiechan face off Without You on YouTube is very funny. She was in Miranda and on Taskmaster too. Strangely enough I'm not particularly a fan.
I am enjoying Austin, well I might have actually closed my eyes after 10 minutes and woken up at the end, but I'm going to watch it again with Dd at some point.

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/04/2025 17:47

How could I forget her finger puppet chat 😂

Must admit I fell asleep part way through, but I think that was purely because I was tired - the programme didn't make me fall asleep.

I thought Sally Phillips was interesting casting as the wife as she has a disabled child herself. She does some very good work helping charities in the SEN field.

I’ve watched 6 episodes and I’m not sure why. It’s pretty silly.

Umanresources · 13/04/2025 11:08

I’ve recorded it and am waiting for DD to watch it with me later tonight.

I watched ten minutes of the first ep then switched off .

After reading the reviews I re-watched it plus ep 2 and now I'm into it and liking it .

Did you not like ?

It was watchable but not really my type of humour.

martinisforeveryone · 13/04/2025 16:17

I watched it all as it wasn't persuading me that it was something I wanted to savour and wait for.

It reminded in some simplistic ways of Ted Lasso, as though it was trying to be just like that, but it didn't measure up for me. Best thing about it was Sally Phillips.

lazymum99 · 13/04/2025 17:08

Sally Phillips’ character was well written. And I liked the relationship between Austin’s mother and the grandfather.

purpleme12 · 15/04/2025 16:18

I tried this as mum said I should try it... But no not worth carrying on with

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/04/2025 20:25

E1 was better but 2 was ok

I watched it all @Blondeshavemorefun but am having to keep quiet until you're done, if you finish that is.

Umanresources · 01/05/2025 13:36

I watched it all and enjoyed it, although I’m probably in the minority as I don’t find Sally Phillips entertaining in the slightest. I just find her too much in everything. Did not like her on Taskmaster as bodily functions and “rude words” from women are not shocking any more. I did enjoy Michael’s performance though, and quite enjoyed Ben Miller as well.
