What an amazing piece of television. Stephen Graham is exceptional. Highly recommend this - on Netflix.

Brilliant… can’t stop thinking about it .
Did a great job of exposing male rage stoked by incels via social media in bedrooms, where we think our children are safe.

glitterturd · 14/03/2025 23:06

It's an uncomfortable watch. It felt quite bleak overall.

LEWWW · 15/03/2025 00:20

I thought it was very well done. Hadn’t really considered all that the families of murders etc go through. Final scene was so sad.

BishBashBoomer · 15/03/2025 03:49

I thought it was mediocre. School life very unrealistic. Bored by episodes 3 and 4 and the lack of action. Not enough actually about the incel aspect. I thought it lacked sensitivity or interest.

I also thought episode 2 was boring. The Jade actress looked distractingly old to be playing a 13 year old. I know it's often the case that actors playing teens are much older than they're supposed to be, 'Derry Girls' being a prime example. But when we had an actual 14 year old playing Jamie it just emphasised how young kids that age really look, and Jade looked out of place.

I also agree with @CorvusPurpureus that everyone was far too casual considering the gravity of the incident.

I thought the casting of Jade was intentional? making the point of the "adultification" of young black women?

As a teacher who has worked in many different schools I was disappointed in the portrayal of the teachers and the school's response, its was the only false note for me

The whole show was incredible, i loved it - wonderful acting and brave writing, no easy answers and lots of room for thought and discussion.

No33 · 15/03/2025 05:06

I loved the episode with the psych.

The ending was lacking for me.

Victoriawould24 · 15/03/2025 07:43

I only got to halfway through episode 2 , the depiction of the school as some lawless pit of chaos and ineptitude was too OTT for me. I couldn’t get past that they were all acting/ overacting and I didn’t feel any emotional connection with any of them.
I appreciate it was a feat in terms of the one take thing but I couldn’t get invested and thought it was a bit flat.

MumofSpud · 15/03/2025 07:49

All the one shot walking down corridors made me feel sea sick!

But Stephen Graham can do no wrong in my eyes, Owen Cooper / Erin Doherty were good

I did think there were some poor areas / acting: the school scenes / Ms Fenumore / Jade
As others have said there is no way the police would go around the school like that and by that character!

I’ve just finishing binging it.
it’s ok.
to be honest I got bored with all the long, drawn out sequences! Interesting storyline though.

it’s very cleverly done and the acting by the children is good.
I found Stephen Graham a bit predictable.

Erin Doherty plays a psychologist in Episode 3 , I thought she was excellent.

I thought the same. Dh got bored and gave up but I watched it all. Episode two bored me rigid with all the walking along school corridors.

LUBAR · 15/03/2025 08:23

I think Owen Cooper (Jamie), Ashley Walters (DI Bascombe) and Erin Doherty (Briony) delivered the better performances, while the actress who played Jade didn't seem convincing at all.

I really like Stephen Graham but I also felt there was something off about his acting in this. I felt it as soon as his character was introduced, where he didn't seem scared/freaked out enough by the police break-in. Or it didn't seem natural to me.

The single shots were brilliant and I loved them. Very impressive and I kept wondering how they timed it all.

glitterturd · 15/03/2025 11:04

I know that the theme was the king of the show but it still irritated me why the police did not question why Jade attacked the other boy ( at this point I was probably still hoping it hadn't been Jamie). At the time I also thought that the contrast between quiet Jamie and angry Jamie in episode 3 was just too ramped up.

I guess that’s the point . Life is mediocre and we begin to look for meaning in it … young males turning to the online world and being drawn to misogyny and insidiously being drawn into the incel world … it happens slowly hence . Parents not questioning what their young people are looking at … accepting the unacceptable because it’s become mainstream ( when the dad casually says that all young people are looking at porn )

I thought episode 3 was fascinating, the psychologist reflecting back to Jamie where his influences come from leading to his male rage … removing the facade that a baby faced young child is not capable of such rage .

as for the school , it was realistic the constant low level disruption , a senior leader who didn’t want to address it … you only have to look at the thread the other week about what is so bad about teaching and parents being number one theme emerging… this is what it looks like in the classroom… parents backing up their children and thinking their child is incapable od disruption, violence , bullying, misogyny etc.

Ferryweather · 15/03/2025 17:44

If that’s what schools are like then I totally get why so many parents are obsessed with private and faith schools.

My thoughts exactly 😭 please posters give me some hope that not all state schools are like this cos I can't afford private and mine is about to go to secondary ...

nameychangey1112 · 15/03/2025 20:15

Are faith schools better?

normanprice62 · 15/03/2025 20:18

Fantastic series with a very important message. After watching episode 3 the young man deserves a bafta, amazing acting.

MillersAngle · 15/03/2025 20:19

Absolutely stupendous and very difficult watch at the same time. I thought the psychologist, the young lad but particularly Stephen Graham were exceptional. The dialogue was incredible, the family in the van was absolutely perfect.

Stephen’s face told the story when it was too sensitive to show on camera, it was incredible. Really powerful.

My only flaw is that I think they have the characterisation for the young boy wrong. No spoilers but his character didn’t fully work for me.

isthismylifenow · 15/03/2025 20:39

I thought there were a quite a few plot holes, a lot wasn't explained.

I'm not from the UK and I know it's a me problem, but I lost focus quite a bit of the time as I just cannot understand a lot of what Stephen Graham was saying. His accent is very strong 😂

Cocolapew · 15/03/2025 22:28

I've just finished it and was underwhelmed. I find Stephen Graham plays every character the same, he's very good at crying though.
Episodes 1 and 3 were the best.

ThreeMagicNumber · 15/03/2025 22:33

We binged it today because seen so much about it. I didn't actually really enjoy it and found it pretty boring.

Also found some of it daft, the policeman chases the boy and the woman walks up having not been there and knows he's being arrested for attempted murder not having heard any of the convo about him supplying the knife. The police in the school didn't seem realistic the way it was conducted. The girls who beat up the boy still being there at the end of the day when she'd beat someone up. The non addressing of the policemans son being bullied etc, why even bring it in to it.

Totally agree, character didn't work at all for me.

FuckOffGerms · 15/03/2025 22:40

I thought it was brilliant, really compelling viewing. But incredibly bleak and it’s got me questioning how I bring my young sons up in such a shitty world.

It was shot beautifully, the lighting changes in episode three were really cleverly done. I’m in full admiration of the production team behind it.

I also agree that there were definitely plot holes and I would have loved to go deeper into Jamie’s story, understand Katie more and find out about his other two friends involvement. I can suspend disbelief though when the message is so hard hitting.

It's more like a play but on screen.

Fraudornot · 16/03/2025 00:04

Episode 2 did drag a bit but episode 4 was outstanding - all the things that are said but unsaid in a family going through rough times. Tremendous drama

Chocolatecustardcreamsrule · 16/03/2025 00:27

I enjoyed it but my god the car scene was the most boring 5 minutes I have ever seen.

It also was frustrating that a lot of topics weren’t covered in depth. It shone a light on incels but I wanted more. His two friends and their involvement. I would have liked more episodes, particularly on the victim/ her family.
