Monica and Richard were better than Monica and Chandler

I always thought Monica and Richard were perfect together (I mean, obv ignoring the fact he didn't want kids, like 😆)
They utterly adored each other 🥲

Definitely.

Trallers · 14/03/2025 04:34

I found the age gap icky, especially as he was her dad's friend. Chandler and Monica win by a long way for me, sorry!

Hungryhungryrhino · 14/03/2025 04:36

He knew her as a small child. She was his friends daughter and his daughters friend. so I always thought it was a bit gross.

TofuFighters · 14/03/2025 04:46

Ew no, he was her dad’s friend, way too old and didn’t want the same things she did.

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 14/03/2025 04:49

Not for me.

Monica and Chandler were perfect for one another.

Rewatching it you can see them subtly setting up the possibility of them getting together.

Caffeineneedednow · 14/03/2025 05:12

I'm another one who found the age gap weird even more so with the childhood connections.

JasmineAllen · 14/03/2025 06:00

Tom Sellick is a handsome looking man but the fact he was her parents friend and watched Monica grow up is a bit yuk.

If one of our friends in his mid fifties got together with our young adult daughter I wouldn't feel entirely comfortable and DH would probably have a fit 😅

Loopytiles · 14/03/2025 06:05

Icky storyline, only watchable because of the two actors’ great skill and Selleck’s looks and charisma

NewMe2024 · 14/03/2025 06:06

If you ignore the age gap though, their personalities were a good fit. Chandler seemed to require a lot of mothering and teaching from Monica whereas with Richard she just enjoyed an adult relationship (but ironic under the circumstances).

ClaudineMallory · 14/03/2025 06:46

No, he was a friend of her parents. Also, Rachel told the story about him being kind when she fell off her bike as a little girl, which just clarified the age gap.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 14/03/2025 06:57

Ugh no. He was a friend of her parents. 🤮🤮

Zippidydoodah · 14/03/2025 06:59

No! He’s too old and watched her grow up!

TooManyCupsAndMugs · 14/03/2025 07:04

I loved Monica and Richard together too. When Monica was with Chandler, she turned from someone who was just a bit obsessed with cleaning to a complete horrible control freak. I don't enjoy Monica's personality in the last 2 seasons.

OurFlagMeansAfternoonTea · 14/03/2025 07:13

She wanted children and he didn't want any more so it always had no future. And the age gap was too much.

None of their personalities improved and Joey just became more stupid, rather than charming.

No the age gap was gross, it never would have worked out long term.

Absolutely, Tom selleck is gorgeous I just read his memoir

NatureOverNightclubs · 14/03/2025 09:17

I've always said this! Monica and Chandler brought out the absolute worst in each other. She became controlling and bossy, he became a whipped soppy bore. Richard was a real man and much more suited to her.

ClaudineMallory · 14/03/2025 16:38

I think she may have been better off with Pete. She could have had a really successful upmarket restaurant. Shame he went for the UFC.

ClaudineMallory · 14/03/2025 16:39

Chandler should have been with Cathy, Phoebe with Science Guy.

Ha yes, I always found it so unrealistic that she broke up with him and for that reason. Especially as he was a genuinely nice guy!

No. Icky age gap, and I don't understand why people find Selleck so attractive. Chandler was far better.

I agree, I don't think Selleck was attractive at all.

potplant · 14/03/2025 18:48

I loved Richard, mostly because of Tom Selleck.

him Knowing her as a child was a major ick.

Ponderingwindow · 14/03/2025 18:55

Monica and Richard were a better couple, but the two relationships illustrate a fundamental truth. Lifestage and shared life goals are incredibly important to a successful relationship.

Monica and Chandler wanted the same things in life. They complemented one another well in terms of accomplishing those goals.

monica and Richard were much more likely to end up divorced and unhappy, even if they made one another happy in the short term.
