I love teenagers, and their generosity and openness is so heartwarming.

So far!

I am! It’s really interesting so far. I really hope Jayla loves her time in London surrounded by kids of all races and cultures.

Downthemarshes · 11/03/2025 20:47

Too many adverts but it's interesting. Quite extreme choices.

CarrieOnComplaining · 11/03/2025 20:53

Meanwhile Sailor is being treated as if she might be racist / homophobic. You could see her heart plummet when her host revealed her own preconceptions of Arkansas.

Me too, was just thinking that when I was watching it. I feel so lucky (most of the time) to work with teenagers! Really interesting programme. I did like the community coming together for the sporting events, it's something that everyone gets involved in which would be nice to see more of here

HopelesslyWanderingStar · 11/03/2025 22:03

Just caught a bit of the start of this. Wondering if this would be appropriate for a quite naive 11 year old?

My child is white and we live in a very ethnically mixed area. But I feel my child is very unaware of the barriers some of their peers may have. I feel they are too scared to even bring it up with their friends, as of course these things are discussed at school (i.e. during black history month). Just wondering if it would be insightful?

Conniethecatapillar · 11/03/2025 22:14

I'm watching on catch up. I'm always amazed how big the houses are in the US and how much space they have!

Rollercoaster1920 · 11/03/2025 22:29

It did feel a bit rural / small town vs city more than UK to US. I'd love to see a return swap with a bunch of rural Devon or Welsh kids swapping with some urban South Central LA kids.

I really like the high school being a focal part of the community and the sports games being a focal event. UK secondary school sports usually don't have any supporters.

The teenagers are amazing, brave for putting themselves out there. I'm looking forward to the second episode.

How has he never gone on an escalator before!

Oneearringlost · 11/03/2025 22:55

Was it DJ who cried a little when he got to Waylon's place? Oh my goodness, my heart broke watching that bit.

CarrieOnComplaining · 11/03/2025 22:55

The boys love for their Mums… on camera!

The guy saying 'oh I kill snakes in front of my house' in front of the pet snake 🙈

Me too.

And then the fishing.

I loved it too that one of the Mena friends could be heard saying ‘I am so sorry’ when DJ was racially abused at the match.

I had honestly never heard of the term 'coon'
I had to look it up

beguilingeyes · 12/03/2025 08:19

It was background noise, but then I got really caught up in it. I loved it.

Oh, yes! I noticed that straightaway, Waylon's contraction of the word "racoon"...it was interesting that it was most probably, an entirely innocent use of the word, and/or normal vernacular for the area he comes from. So is it just 'dialect ', or is it an indication of being blind to the casual racial speech and slurs, that is normal for that part of the world?

Oneearringlost · 12/03/2025 08:31

Sorry, shouldn't have said " that is normal for".
Better to have said " that SOME may consider normal"

Coon for raccoon like gator for alligator. There’s a breed of dogs called coon dogs for hunting raccoons.

Watching now, loving it as a concept

claudiaswinklemen · 12/03/2025 20:42

Fantastic programme - great kids (and adults), high quality production and so balanced and insightful.

BarMonaco · 13/03/2025 15:17

Planning on watching this

BeaAndBen · 13/03/2025 16:49

The Arkansas principle and his "there are still some liberals" comment was both hilarious and kind of worrying!

It reminded me of a Bill Hicks routine about sitting in a coffee shop before a gig in the Deep South and being asked "whatcha reading for?"

It's that "for" that gets scary.

Justcallmebebes · 13/03/2025 17:45

When Waylon's family took the S London lad fishing and he was so at peace and the family were so lovely with him and seemed to instinctively "get him". That really moved me

claudiaswinklemen · 13/03/2025 20:00

All of the parents have come across as so wise and kind.

Conniethecatapillar · 13/03/2025 21:10

I feel for the American kids going to London, I think it must be a lot to take in!
