Hi! I need to discover some new shows.
My absolute comfort TV show is one in which a mystery/crime is solved is a fun way/by funny characters.
So nothing too sombre or serious like Shetland or Sherlock.
The key though, is that the writing has to be high quality. I find that a lot of these sort of programmes aren't great with the plotlines/writing and can veer into cheesiness/silliness pretty quickly.

If you have any recommendations for this type of shows, please let me know. Thanks.

Murder in Provence maybe. Don't know where you'd get it though

LIZS · 10/03/2025 17:43

Father Brown, Marlow Murder Club, Mallorca Files, Rosemary and Thyme

I'm really enjoying Jack Irish which is on the Channel 4 streaming app.

Its Australian, with Guy Pearce as the lead, the crimes are not lightweight but it's so funny, with some lighter side themes.

RedRiverShore5 · 10/03/2025 19:24

Magpie murders

saveforthat · 10/03/2025 19:28

The Magpie Murders and Moonflower Murders are good. I'm really enjoying the new Bergerac but it's a bit darker than the original so may not suit you.

I enjoy The Brokenwood Mysteries. Set in New Zealand. Different murder each episode, and you get to know the recurring characters. Not too dark or violent, but not too silly either.

BeyondMyWits · 10/03/2025 19:37

Father Brown

Castle ... American, funny, quite a few series and it finishes with all loose ends rounded up

Professor T ... a bit of a weird one.

The Good Ship Murder is very silly but entertaining

MissKittyFantastico84 · 10/03/2025 20:10

Midsomer Murders! You've got roughly 23 series of never endingly quirky plotlines and ingenious murders in a show that only rarely take itself particularly seriously - and while I wouldn't say it was hilarious, it definitely ticks the same cozy, amusing, eccentric British murder box that McDonald & Dodds does.

And for a higher budget, more modern take, try Poker Face with Natasha Lyonne. It has some of the freshest murder mystery writing and funny plot twists I've seen - it's so unique and I loved it. It was inspired by Columbo, one of the GREATS, so of course it's good.
