I really liked them both, they both seemed lovely funny fellas.

Stevie's problems didn't seem related to his diabetes, more to poor planning and ensuing panic. Stevie seems like a lovely guy and was quite funny and really emotional at the end. I just felt sorry for Marty as he was quietly focused on getting things up on time, possibly at the expense of perfect execution, whereas Stevie was allowed a lot of leeway and was coached through the process by Andi. I did think Stevie was better overall but he seemed to go to pieces quite easily.

To be fair that is absolutely how my partners low blood sugar and after effects presents - can’t plan, can’t think through consequences, all over the place - real cognitive dysfunction - and quite stroppy too. We can quite often look back at the block of time before his blood sugar is low and see how the wheels where coming off and we didn’t clock it, so it makes perfect sense to me that his timings were way out.
I appreciate for people without experience of diabetes it would look like a lot was being blamed on his diabetes, but me and DP actually found it quite stressful to watch with how close to home it felt 🙈😅

Very rude, I was just thinking how good it is that a TV show is showing the brutal reality of living with type 1 diabetes and come on here to see you all acting like it's a walk in the park and he's being dramatic. You're sounding exceptionally ableist.

Excuse me. Did you miss the post where I said I used to suffer one or more hypos DAILY. I am also a diabetic (amongst many other life long conditions). Perhaps I could have phrased better (I was tired), but it is clear that at the time his diabetes was not being managed correctly. Given he is a chef and had been a while, knows the hours, the stresses, the workload etc the diabetes management should be tailored to him. So something was clearly off. Either he wasn't doing all the things he knew he needed to do (eat regular, check sugars, avoid high sugar/processed foods) or there was an external factor. Either way he needed to see his diabetic team before finals week to try and get a hold on what was going wrong so it didn't re occur during the final. I speak from experience so you can keep your ableist comment thanks.

Still came across as ableist bullshit, if you're t1d then you should know that there are days when no matter what you do you aren't going to get it right - the body and different environmental factors are always going to create unpredictability. If you are type 1 diabetic then I'd have expected you to have a bit more sympathy about the fact that some days you just end up on a blood sugar seesaw no matter how well controlled you normally are

Sunbird24 · 14/03/2025 14:48

Well the most intense part of the competition is done for Stevie now - in the final they’re back to cooking a course then having a break while the next set of chefs are in the kitchen, and if he gets a dish to the banquet (big if!) then it’s only one course and usually seems to be plenty of teamwork going on.

Anyhow, only London & the South East to go, hopefully they’ll have some impressive dishes and be inspired by actual people…

I wonder who the waiting staff are? Hospitality workers?

I’d love to know

Sunbird24 · 14/03/2025 15:57

They look catering college age to me, but I’m a bit rubbish at young people these days!

They used to be minimally-traiend minimum wage servers employed by Leith's. I imagine they are now minimally-trained minimum wage servers from a similar company.

I wonder if Ed’s diabetes gives him trouble when filming. I imagine it must be quite hard to manage when you have no control over what you eat.

murasaki · 14/03/2025 17:26

Christ, the losers from last week were so much better than these two.

Was I the only one thing that in a NI heat, Andi's dress choice was a bold one?

I was wondering that. Possibly they get quantities of ingredients from the chefs so he can calculate the carbs, but I doubt it. I imagine he just has to guess and monitor carefully.

kazzaD66 · 14/03/2025 18:40

NI heat was embarrassingly shite and Tom was clearly losing the will to live Grin

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 14/03/2025 21:14

I was shocked by Marty's scores... don't think I ever remember someone getting a 2. Didnt someone walk out after Waring gave him a 3 in the heats?

I think the chefs being chosen for the series are slipping down the charts as most of the really good, Michelin starred ones, are veterans.

I thought Marty's restaurant's sign was really naff; it didn't bespeak a quality chef. I loved his accent and attitude though; I hope he didn't take those scores too badly.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 14/03/2025 21:16

I mean years ago BTW. When Marcus Waring was a judge 😂

Theeyeballsinthesky · 14/03/2025 21:30

Johnnie mountain was the chef who walked out after Marcus gave him a low score (maybe a 4?)

namechangingeasy · 14/03/2025 22:16

I do think the NI lot deserve another chance as it was a really odd week.

kazzaD66 · 14/03/2025 22:37

Yes, I remember the Johnnie / Marcus incident. Looking online, it was 2012 and Marcus gave him a score of 2. Also cooking was Aidan Byrne and a very young looking Simon Rogan.

Davros · 14/03/2025 23:09

I remember that. Simon Rogan in the background looking amused/shocked into the camera. Hilarious!

Evening!

Evening. This is a starry round. Watch them fail to boil an egg.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 18/03/2025 20:03

Well eran seems like a complete arse - telling the only female chef she’s too old for this

littlbrowndog · 18/03/2025 20:03

Evening. Hope these chefs are good

littlbrowndog · 18/03/2025 20:04

Oh did he. Jeez

Sunbird24 · 18/03/2025 20:05

She looks younger than him…
