Channel 4 has confirmed that upcoming drama Get Millie Black (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/get-millie-black-how-to-watch-uk/) will finally begin airing with a double header on Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th March

UK viewers have had to wait patiently for the show, which debuted on HBO in November across the Atlantic and has received generally strong reviews from critics.

Booker prize winner Marlon James is breaking into television with his rave-reviewed cop show. Its creator and star talk wigs, unfinished business – and what it’s really like being queer in Jamaica today

Created by acclaimed novelist Marlon James, it stars Time (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/time-season-2-review/)'s Tamara Lawrance as Jamaican-born detective Millie-Jean Black after she is is forced out of Scotland Yard and returns home to join the Jamaican Police Force.

The synopsis for the series continues: "She and her partner, Curtis, investigate missing person cases, and their lives are up-ended when one of their investigations crosses paths with another that brought Scotland Yard detective Luke Holborn to Kingston."

The series opens with a flashback to Millie’s childhood in Jamaica, and the close sibling bond that was severed when their mother sent her to London to live with relatives. Now back in Jamaica for more than a year, Millie is attempting to rebuild family ties and, in the meantime, has become close to her detective partner, Curtis (Gershwyn Eustache Jr), a gay man who must keep his sexuality secret from the rest of their colleagues

Meanwhile, star Lawrance has described the show as "tense and surprising", and told viewers to expect "so many unexpected scenes”

The series is made up of five episodes and they have all been given unique titles.

All of the titles are named after characters in the series, and they are as follows:
Episode 1 - Millie
Episode 2 - Hibiscus
Episode 3 - Holborn
Episode 4 - Janet
Episode 5 - Curtis

I don't think the reviewer is a fan!. But at least it is a nice blow by blow (literally) account of the hour.

MayIDestroyYou · 08/03/2025 15:00

Wow! I’m halfway through Ep 4. Absolutely loving it.

Meticulous plotting and characterisation. The tension keeps ramping up. It’s really superb.

(Also Millie’s police partner is hot as 🔥. And so far her boyfriend / FWB is a sweetheart.)

And yes Marlon James’ Desert Island Discs was brilliant!

Finished. Really excellent (though the London set sections were less compelling).

BTW there are countless other and better reviews …

PreventPomtoPerson · 08/03/2025 19:15

Wanted to like this but struggling, it’s not great so far. Does it improve?

MayIDestroyYou · 08/03/2025 19:43

I’d be really interested to know what you’re struggling with, @PreventPomtoPerson?

(I found it enthralling.)

PreventPomtoPerson · 08/03/2025 19:53

I’ve got as far as ep2 and it’s jumping around all over the place. To be fair I tend to find police based dramas quite unbelievable due to experience in a former life.

MayIDestroyYou · 08/03/2025 19:59

Oh - that’s reasonable. I can’t watch TV dramas relating to my former profession.

PreventPomtoPerson · 08/03/2025 20:02

I’m more than happy to suspend disbelief if the theme is good and this sounded decent so I don’t know whether to be disappointed and write it off or give it another episode or so - how quickly does it get moving?

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/03/2025 20:47

Give it e3 @MayIDestroyYou

I’ve decided to give up on this. Enjoy viewing
and I’ll be back when it’s finished for the lowdown.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/03/2025 22:18

I am struggling with it @WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout. I went to continue but …..

Just isn’t for me.

HolidayHattie · 12/03/2025 22:45

I was a bit unsure about E1 but decided to give E2 a try and thought it was good. Disturbing, but good. It certainly doesn't make me want to visit Jamaica! I didn't have any trouble following the story this week as we already knew all the characters from E1. I found the first one far more confusing.

I'm not sure when I'll watch E3 but I'm looking forward to it.

duc748 · 13/03/2025 00:41

I'm still watching and enjoying it.

Do you understand it?

obv didn’t help I fell asleep in e2 so maybe I need to rewatch it as recap I didn’t rem things happening p

Yes, I'm not finding it hard to follow. I wouldn't say it's brilliant, but it's twice the show The Bay is, for example.

I have watched all 5 episodes now. I think this was a bit different to a lot of dramas and I really enjoyed it despite the subject matter.
I hope there is another series

purpleme12 · 20/03/2025 21:27

Well it was certainly an interesting watch, albeit different

Everyone who was supposed to love each other were often annoyed at each other. Curtis was always annoyed at Millie. Daniel always annoyed at Curtis and Millie. Hibiscus often annoyed at Millie for various reasons.

The scene where the police came for Curtis and Daniel I didn't like watching that.

And can't say I appreciated the mindless violence in it all

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/03/2025 21:47

Oh god it was on last night. I forgot. Is it worth seeing 4&5

OP posts:
MayIDestroyYou · 20/03/2025 21:52

People don’t all show love in the same way, though. It’s interesting that you point it out because I don’t think I’d realised that was one of the things I particularly appreciated in the drama. So much love and loyalty in trying circumstances. And evidenced through actions, not words.

daffodilandtulip · 13/04/2025 08:40

Oh I found this this week! Don't know how I missed it from your list @Blondeshavemorefun

Just the last one to go, I really like it. She's a great actress, and it's a refreshing place for a drama to be set.
