An t-Eilean (The Island) – the UK’s first ever high-end Gaelic drama series is a tense, twisting story of lies, loss and long-buried secrets set against the elemental backdrop of the Western Isles of Scotland.
Sorcha Groundsell (His Dark Materials, Shetland, The Innocents) plays Kat Crichton a young Family Liaison Officer, who is assigned by her boss, DCI Ahmed Halim (Sagar Radia – Industry) to a murder investigation on Lewis and Harris, islands from which she fled ten years previously.

NB - I would say this article has too many spoilers in it so dont read if you want to story to unfold for you via the tv series!

Well I've watched two episodes and am totally confused.

The back story and the family members are a more than a bit confusing for me.

But as to the scenery and current detecting am appreciating both.

I think there are only 4 episodes in total.

So quite a lot to be sorted out quite quickly!

DH and I watched the first one and I’m afraid we gave up. The Family Liaison Officer looked about 15 and terrified but seemed no younger in the flashback to ten years ago 🤔

Then there was the whole very minor interaction with the daughter that somehow escalated into a massive 'never darken my island again' situation and it all felt very contrived and unlikely.

However, yes, great scenery!

We left it to record so we might go back and watch the rest…..but I’m not holding my breath.

I’ve watched all four episodes and enjoyed it overall.

I was in the end disappointed.

I just thought the plot line was just a bit tedious. This is partly from watching Shetland where it seems every family has some dark or kinky secret. So just couldn't be bothered with half of the plot twists.

Nor the cliched unexpected return to home town for the lead characterd. How many series have started with this.

It was more a family drama that a police procedural.

I am not totally dismissing it, and it seems BBC Abla spend nearly half its total budget making this so hope they recoup some of it!

I would have like something that had more about the life of ordinary people, and run of the mill crimes, and how the police did or did not work together.

But will admit that I too was distracted by the lead character. Not because she was too young or anything, but because I associate her with His Dark Materials and kept expecting some other wordly event.

I wonder if they are hoping to make another series?

Oh, I’d never seen her before so I didn’t have that to distract me, @IwantToRetire. She just looked so young!

I did say on another thread I am hopeless with faces and she isn't the actress I thought she was ie she was in His Dark Materials but not playing the role I thought.

And yes Sorcha Groundsell does look very young but is 27, 28.

Which probably is a bit young to be family liason officer.

But she does speak Gaelic!
