New 6 part detective series

Harry Virdee is a detective hunting down a killer targeting the Asian community in Bradford (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradford).

Meanwhile, his Sikh family are dismayed at his
decision to marry Saima, who is Muslim.

The writer behind a new BBC crime thriller filmed and set in Bradford has said he wanted to "show off" his home in its UK City of Culture year.

Virdee, adapted from a set of novels written by AA Dhand, will premiere at Bradford's St George's Hall on Thursday, before airing on the BBC on Monday.

The series will introduce DCI Harry Virdee - a police detective whose troubled home life stems from his Sikh family's disapproval of his marriage to a Muslim wife and the activities of his drug kingpin brother-in-law.

The title character's "love for his family and his city will be challenged" as the series progresses, according to Staz Nair, who played Harry Virdee.

"Harry is a man who will protect what he loves and who he loves at any cost," Nair, who previously appeared in Game of Thrones, said.

"This man lives by his own moral compass and his own moral code and will do whatever he has to do get the job done, even if that means surfing the line of the law."

Thank you! I love things like this that add a little bit extra. Probably why I love historical dramas so much.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/02/2025 21:22

Do you know Bradford ?

No, I meant I hope they add some Sikh background as I know very little about it and I find programmes like these sometimes make you learn without realising iyswim.

Thank you @Blondeshavemorefun for the thread 💐

I've read the books, loved the early one, not so keen on the last ones. I'm very tempted to watch.

This sounds different to the normal drama and my tv mag says it's quite dark. Will be watching tonight as haven't started Forgotten yet .

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/02/2025 17:43

The six-part series is set in Bradford, West Yorkshire, and follows detective Harry Virdee as he looks to reconnect with his Sikh family, who have disowned him for marrying a Muslim girl.

With his personal life in turmoil, he is also tasked with catching a serial killer who is targeting the Asian community in the UK city of Bradford.

And when Harry is pulled into an uncomfortable alliance with a notorious drugs kingpin in order to snare the murderer, he must choose between saving himself and his family or saving his city.

“It’s an absolute honour to be taking on this vibrant and complex story about assimilating culture and what we’re willing to do to protect who and what we love,” says Staz.

“This show leads with vulnerability more than any detective drama I’ve ever seen, and it’s a privilege to be bringing AA Dhand’s hope for his city to life.”

When Detective Harry Virdee married his Muslim wife Saima (played by Aysha Kala), his Sikh family disowned him.

Now, struggling with abandonment and with his young son Aaron starting to ask questions, he decides it’s time to rebuild bridges with them.

At the same time, Harry is called upon to catch a serial killer preying on the Asian community.

And when the murderer kidnaps a local police chief’s son, Harry is forced to turn to his brother-in-law, a drug lord who runs the largest cartel in the country, for help. But doing so could destroy them both.

I thought I'd give it a go and was surprised by how much I enjoyed watching it. I think it's excellent that religious and cultural tensions are aired in this way - his father was horrible! Reminds me very much of inter faith marriages in Ireland - my uncle (catholic) and aunt (protestant) kept their marriage secret for years and it helped that they lived in London.

Abra1t · 11/02/2025 15:01

I only turned on BBC1 to get the 10 o'clock news and was hooked by the last ten minutes.

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/02/2025 15:45
