This is interesting
Sister Monica Joan on the radio (perfect for Her).
Might lead to a prequel.

The the real Mrs Dr T been reading our threads?

KohlaParasaurus · 09/02/2025 20:57

"My wife isn't coming back, my cat's dead, I'm not made to be alone, will you marry me?"

witchycat2 · 09/02/2025 20:57

Sister Julienne is a bit dense

ImWearingPantaloons · 09/02/2025 20:58

Nasty racist piece of work

He is sadder over Nigel's death than losing Lucille (fair enough)

CrushingOnRubies · 09/02/2025 20:59

Rosalind hasn't eaten many of her grapes

Tigresswoods · 09/02/2025 21:04

I can smell that hairdryer

witchycat2 · 09/02/2025 21:05

How annoying we have to wait 2 weeks due to the boring baftas

Rosalind hasn't eaten many of her grapes

She’s probably going to have them stuffed for her bottom drawer or pressed for her love journal.

spiderlight · 09/02/2025 21:17

Nigel... 😢

AtlasPine · 09/02/2025 21:29

I’m glad they’re trying to portray in some way the grinding long-lasting damage of personal and institutional racism. In 1980 I recall one patient grabbing my arm and asking me in a hiss to accompany her to her new residential home (she was moving on after a long stay in hospital) because the ward sister had chosen a ‘Blackie’ to take her which, she was sure, would leave a bad impression…

FagsMagsandBags · 09/02/2025 21:35

I hope that racist piece of shit gets what's coming to her. There might not have been anyone there but her husband for the last visit but the new nun saw exactly what she was about. It's a shame she didn't die because that would have been a relief. Poor Nigel dying in Cyril's arms left me in tears.

FagsMagsandBags · 09/02/2025 21:37

I'm not convinced with Sister Julienne's reaction to the racism. Joyce is not the first West Indian nurse and she's not an idiot, there's no way she could be completely ignorant of the racism that surrounded them.

I know. Made her look thick to be honest.

Awful things is there's still people who think like this. I live in an area that has had a lot of African people move here. My favourite neighbours are from different African countries. But they way some people go on is so ignorant. Well they don't in front of me now. Fuckers.

Anyway I enjoyed tonight. Shame it isn't on next week.

Honestly, I think in the 70s, someone like the sister would have just told Joyce to ‘ignore it’ or explained away the racism as ‘she’s just being silly.’ I don’t think many white people had a clue about what it was like. It wasn’t very often talked about and understanding was on such a basic level. In those days saying proudly that you didn’t see colour was thought to be terribly progressive.

Cyclebabble · 09/02/2025 21:56

I am ethnically Indian. The thing often forgotten is that racism was really mainstream in the 70s and 80s- I think CTM is now in the very early 70s no as yet no Race Relations Act and no "rivers of blood speech?" My parents experienced terrible racism with no come back- the Police often would not take action against an assault on an Asian person. It was good to see that we now have a racist patient and the hearing may not be all that straight forward either.

PinkCandles · 09/02/2025 21:57

Poor Joyce. It's good that they're being realistic about racism rather than pretending it didn't exist.

Wasn't it the Rivers of Blood speech that sent Lucille back to Jamaica?

Yes, it was in 68, so must have been the series before last.

Diddlydumdum · 09/02/2025 22:06

The racism towards Nurse Hyland is disgraceful but then she shows distaste for Cyril going out with Nurse Clifford because it will be seen as objectionable?

I think she was being realistic and protective. Maybe she feels nurse Clifford is being naive?
