I've had a rare quiet afternoon and I've popped it back on. I love all Amanda's outfits. They wouldn't suit me as I'm the opposite: short, ample of breast and dark. Wouldn't suit my lifestyle either which consists of wfh, tescos and kids after school activities.

the80sweregreat · 15/02/2025 19:22

Amanda wears a lot of white
Not a colour I could wear at all.

That’s the joke, no mum can wear so much white

Hollieandtheivie · 15/02/2025 20:18

I also think there's a joke with the hair styles too. Amanda, her mum and Anne all have layered, highlighted hair with a fringe. But Anne's isn't quite as good as Amanda's. When I had that haircut, mine was more Anne's than Amanda's 😆 It's all these little things that are so well observed.

Amanda is so vulnerable, but she hides it well behind her tough / bossy exterior.
I wouldn't be friends with her, but she is oddly likeable ( if that makes any sense )

I like Amanda too, but more for her faults/insecurities which she tries so hard to hide than her glossy exterior.

I'm not sure why I like her though. Perhaps I kind of admire her for (unconsciously!) arsing her way through her insecurities?! She appears shallow to others, but she is actually genuinely authentic in her own head which is what makes her so fascinating.
I've watched all 6 and have thoroughly enjoyed all of them. Every episode is a gem.

My hair is definitely more Anna's atm
My fully menopause fringe has taken on a life force of its own lately and doing what it likes !
I also cba to ' grow it out ' as that would make it look even worse :(
How I wish I had done it years ago

thisoldcity · 16/02/2025 09:05

@Oceansblue I think you explain that well - she is 'authentic in her own head' she isn't faking it, exactly, she's very genuine in her way.

Tourist29 · 16/02/2025 19:56

Quite liked it but as with Motherland I found some of the characters too much - Meg in ML and Johannes and Della in AL. Missed Kevin but liked Max, remembered the actor from Trollied. Joanne Lumley outstanding as always.

Julia could have arranged a child minder for the children !
Her in laws were funny.

The episode when Julia took her in laws ( and Kev ) to the Fish restaurant was comical .. especially with Mrs Lamb being there and Julia offering to pay for her not realising that all Mrs L’s friends were rocking up as well… 🤣

I know what you mean there! Off topic a bit now but the impact hormones can have on hair is wild. When I was pregnant with my youngest, my hair went so thick because it didn't shed. My fringe was solid and straight - like a broom across my forehead! A couple of months after she was born, I was left with hardly any fringe. Then the crazy second fringe grew when the new hairs started growing a few months later. That was certainly an interesting fringe time, and it's funny looking back on photos at the different stages. I'm growing it out now (I'm peri and don't want to be at the mercy of my hormones fringe-wise) 😆

I watched the first two episodes in real time... then binged the rest on Saturday night. I enjoyed them - I hated Motherland, the characters were so stereotyped.

I do like that the kids have grown up in real time.

Slimbear · 18/02/2025 06:32

Watched episodes 1 to 3 -I was laughing out loud. I think I missed part of the first episode cos I don’t know who is who - the Dad and step-dad …who is the mother. Where/who is Anne’s partner.
I loved Amanda’s terrible treatment of her boss - good acting on his part.

MichaelAndEagle · 18/02/2025 06:41

Just rewatching. Anne did reference some of her other kids, in the scene where she is face timing all the Pats, she takes the ipad off and shouts two names and says come and talk to your auntie Pats or something.
I think if there is another series they will go in to her marriage, she says about a lack of intimacy, she's back at work and they've obviously downsized and moved area. Maybe he's lost all their money or something.

the80sweregreat · 18/02/2025 08:22

I watched the pilot of ML last night and Anne mentions her husband's stroke.

wildfellhall · 18/02/2025 10:42

They are teeing up romance with the nice weary neighbour which is sweet although hard to pull off I imagine.
Anne is a wonderful creation.
I loved all the Pats

Delatron · 18/02/2025 10:49

I don’t think we need to see Anne’s other younger kids. I like that this
series focuses on the teenagers.

Those that watched Motherland with primary aged kids will mainly have teens now so I like that it’s still relevant for many.

I agree.
Others had wondered where her other kids are, but I agree we don't need to see them as this is about parenting teens.

mum2jakie · 18/02/2025 16:29

The children were always pretty incidental to the stories anyway.

We have never seen Anne's husband
Same as we never saw Kevin's wife

Now Abby is the unseen spouse

wildfellhall · 19/02/2025 15:16

Kevin's wife.... so funny.

The 'human cloakroom'.

Yourinmyspot · 19/02/2025 15:24

After trying to restrict myself to watching it one episode a week I’ve just binged the last four episodes. I really enjoyed it, some great characters and it was funny.

Tootingbec · 19/02/2025 22:06

I actually cried with laughter at the scene on Johanna’s roof top with the air conditioning going and him shouting “Patak Philippe!!” Over and over again 😂

JaninaDuszejko · 20/02/2025 08:07

The two Irish women not liking each other is, itself - very funny.

Yeah, that really made me laugh so much and I'm not sure why.

I think I loved this more than Motherland. It felt like Amanda, Anne, and Felicity had more complexity and depth to them and there was more warmth to the series. Although maybe that's unfair because Amanda was just the school queen bee in series one of motherland and it was only at the end that we saw some cracks in that facade.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 20/02/2025 08:16

A lot of Amanda’s issues are due to her insecurity imo. I think I’m more of an Anne in the people pleasing department.
