Motherland. To say I thought it would be funnier is an understatement.

I've just started watching it today, and I'm on episode 5 of Season 1.

So far I've had one 'sort of' laugh out loud. But I don't think I can watch any more.

Kevin - irritating to the point of wanting to tear my hair out.

The Absent Husband - just why? And who would put up with that?

Julia - pretty good.

Liz - probably the least unfunny thing about it 👍

Is it just me who's not getting it?

Diverting but not funny. Agree with you about Kevin, didn't like Julia and found it all vaguely depressing

NormaLouiseBates · 30/12/2024 17:36

Liz is the best character in it 😂 have you had the "take my kids Kevin, take my fucking kids Kevin!" scene yet?

Yes, it was mildly amusing.

To be fair, there's not much on TV that'll make me laugh. The older I get, the harder I am to please Grin
But I had heard loads of good things about this, and it's so far off the mark.
I have also binged Fleabag during the Christmas break, and very much enjoyed that.

You aren't supposed to like them.

I watched it a few weeks ago and although my dc are older now, I found myself reminiscing about that time in my life. Forgetting world book day and that constant juggling of if you take mine swimming I'll bring some toasted cheese sandwiches to the pool at five and then they are all fed. I've got some all in one shampoo so let's get them showered.

I like the absent husband story line because that's what it felt like at the time although my dh was probably never on a stag. When Julia was wrestling washing that wasn't spun out of the machine whilst he was on a barge or whatever and he said 'now you are at home full time can we cancel the cleaner'.

At my ds's primary there was a gang of mothers who swished around. I loved it at sports day when Amanda said to Meg that it was good of her to turn up and she picked her up on it.

It's not a comedy like Allo Allo with 'hilarious' situations and it's not Bluey where the main characters are wonderful.

It's hilarious. The characters are spot on and reminded me of those ridiculous school mum conversations. If it doesn't appeal just watch some else. You don't need to start a whole thread. It's obviously funny to quite a number of people they made multiple series!

mewkins · 30/12/2024 17:51

I love Motherland but I think it settles into itself towards the end of series 1. In series 2 the characters all soften a bit and become actual friends rather than school acquaintances. And it gets funnier.

I can start a thread if I like, thanks Grin
And of course I can watch something else.
It's just interesting to hear others' opinions.

I don't think you have to belly laugh or guffaw out loud to find something amusing or enjoyable. I absolutely love motherland!

Oh yes, we have all been there. I remember it well!
But Kevin actually makes it more unwatchable, so it's not just about finding them unlikeable.

Interesting!
And absolutely fair enough. I guess I expected more, but I can see that I'm in the minority Smile

The thing is, OP, humour is very personal. I happen to think Motherland is very funny, but there are other things "everyone" laughs at that leave me cold. We're all different, that's all.

I find the seconds series funnier....no mum left behind is a laugh out loud episode imo...if you can hang on that long. The scene on the bus is quite slapstick

LoudSnoringDog · 30/12/2024 17:57

I really liked it. I think I've recognised all
Characters at the school gates

OriginalUsername2 · 30/12/2024 17:58

What. It’s brilliant! I asked DP to watch the Christmas special with me and we’re now watching the whole thing on his request. It’s my 3rd time, I like it that much!

Horses for courses isn't it? I think Motherland is hilarious but am baffled by the fact Mrs Brown's Boys not only keeps being made but wins publicly voted awards Confused

Strikeoutnow · 30/12/2024 18:00

I love it but watched it from the start. it’s hard to watch anything that’s proclaimed as brilliant & have it live up to expectations.

What programmes do you find funny @JMSA?

foyc · 30/12/2024 18:01

It's already a bit dated and 'of its time' tbh, it came out around the height of the scummy mummy scene and was addressing a shared feeling of exasperation, but 8 years later it has been done to death so probably feels less fresh than it would have done when it first came out.

OnlyMothersInTheBuilding · 30/12/2024 18:02

I don't like it either, I prefer my comedy warmer and need a couple of characters I can root for at least on some level. I can't bear anyone in Motherland!

imisscashmere · 30/12/2024 18:03

Re recognising all the characters at the school gates. I’m a bit concerned that they all look quite polished and nice. I’m incredibly scruffy on the school run - sweat pants, massive north face coat, usually ankle length wellies, unbrushed hair, definitely no make up. Am I beyond parody?

MermaidEyes · 30/12/2024 18:04

I think it's funny, but I much preferred Workin Moms on Netflix. Laughed out loud at that.

InWithThePlums · 30/12/2024 18:04

I find it very funny but wouldn’t the world be boring if we all liked the same things?

The funniest thing I've watched - which had tears rolling down my cheeks - was Phoenix Nights.
An oldie but a goodie ... at least in my opinion!

I thought it was toe-curlingly awful, so no, you're not alone and yes, you should feel free to start a thread about it.
