Motherland. To say I thought it would be funnier is an understatement.

I've just started watching it today, and I'm on episode 5 of Season 1.

So far I've had one 'sort of' laugh out loud. But I don't think I can watch any more.

Kevin - irritating to the point of wanting to tear my hair out.

The Absent Husband - just why? And who would put up with that?

Julia - pretty good.

Liz - probably the least unfunny thing about it 👍

Is it just me who's not getting it?

I love Motherland, it’s not side splitting funny, but it’s a warm and relatable comedy. Love the part when the school ring Julia at work about some forgotten swimming trunks and she asks the receptionist if she’d rung her husband to ask the same question and it’s always no. I get this so much. DC school always ring me when I’m at work and never try to call my DH. Because he’s a man so will be busy at work.

Mrs Browns Boys however, I don’t get it.

HellsBells67 · 30/12/2024 19:03

I managed one episode, crock of shit.

PoisonRain · 30/12/2024 19:05

Oh I dunno, I find it funny despite finding it hard to warm to any of the characters at first! I think that's part of it's slightly off-kilter "charm". They're all hateful or pathetic, and Julia in particular is vile (especially to her poor mother). But as time goes on and you get to know them all, they all have a story to tell and horrid Julia's lovelorn pining for the builder and her yearning for romantic love was quite touching.

Just me I expect.

Re recognising all the characters at the school gates. I’m a bit concerned that they all look quite polished and nice. I’m incredibly scruffy on the school run - sweat pants, massive north face coat, usually ankle length wellies, unbrushed hair, definitely no make up. Am I beyond parody?

But they don't. Julia always looks like she's been dragged through a hedge backwards and her clothes never match. She's often in joggers with her hair in a lopsided ponytail.

Liz just wears jeans, a t shirt and coat and Anne a similar sort of thing.

I find the seconds series funnier....no mum left behind is a laugh out loud episode imo...if you can hang on that long. The scene on the bus is quite slapstick

You see that is the only episode I've not found funny, and can't rewatch. I thought it was cringe-makingly awful. I just don't find slapstick funny at all.

MyStylish40s · 30/12/2024 19:07

I think Kevin was supposed to be irritating, and we weren’t supposed to like Julia or find her relatable.

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 30/12/2024 19:08

Where the frick is Amandaland, that’s what I want to know.

Itsannamay · 30/12/2024 19:09

The episode where they head off to the holiday house and Kevin brings a pig on the spit is hilarious.

Horses for courses isn't it? I think Motherland is hilarious but am baffled by the fact Mrs Brown's Boys not only keeps being made but wins publicly voted awards Confused

It has entire tribute acts around the English speaking world.

I absolutely love it, ‘take my kids Kevin, take my fucking kids’ gets me every time. And when Julia is on the phone to the absent husband who says ‘if you drop something I will always be there to pick it up…and toss it back to you’. And Gary the builder.

Erm, it was Garry. The second r makes all of the difference.

FreeLucyLetby · 30/12/2024 19:11

To be fair, I don’t think Julia would bother being your friend unless you were of some use to her. She’s not supposed to be likeable. 🙂

DailyEnergyCrisis · 30/12/2024 19:12

I absolutely love Motherland but why on earth would you binge watch 5 of something you didn’t like that much? Who has that kind of patience/time? It stays the same- if you don’t like it by episode 5 I’d cut it loose.

DullTinsel · 30/12/2024 19:14

I love Motherland and I don't have kids.

Working Moms is funny but far too glossy to be even remotely believable.

I will happily watch Fleabag, Here we go, Ghosts, Gavin and Stacey, Phoneshop, The IT Crowd, Alan Partridge, Peep Show, Black Books, The Office (UK and US), Extras, The Inbetweeners, Green Wing, Father Ted, Spaced, The Cleaner, Brooklyn 99, Fawlty Towers, Rising Damp, Parks and Rec, Curb, What we do in the shadows, Toast of London, Modern Family etc etc etc all on a loop. I love funny tv and I would say I will watch virtually anything.

Mrs Brown's Boys remains a mystery, however. I've tried not to be a snob about it but I don't know a single person who's watched it and enjoyed it. It's completely perplexing.

DullTinsel · 30/12/2024 19:15

Much like our own dear Gregg Wallace and his 2 Gs

reesewithoutaspoon · 30/12/2024 19:16

I wanted to watch it. But i found Julia irritating to the point of making it unbearable to watch

NoCarbsForMe · 30/12/2024 19:16

It's incredibly cringey

NoCarbsForMe · 30/12/2024 19:18

KnittedCardi · 30/12/2024 18:08

I agree with Cheese. Motherland is brilliant, I've watched it several times, and Fleabag. Outnumbered was good. Most of the other comedies are rubbish. Mrs Browns Boys, just why, grim. Gavin and Stacy I don't get.

I can't STAND the parents in outnumbering. Terrible show. Just awful!

Zebedee999 · 30/12/2024 19:19

Love it, but then I like dry subtle humour.

Yup

Diverting but not funny. Agree with you about Kevin, didn't like Julia and found it all vaguely depressing

I felt the same way about it. It started when I had young kids. If I wanted to watch all that school gate shit I'd just go to my own kids school.

Notachristmaself · 30/12/2024 19:21

Yes me too. I love Anna Maxwell Martin in most things, but not this.

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 30/12/2024 19:22

I just love it. I've never related to someone more than I've related to Julia when she's trying to prep Christmas dinner in the first Christmas special. The hysterical rants, the shit falling out of the fridge every time she opens it, the useless in-laws and their constant 'minor' requests. Even the mum wearily saying 'all right Julia' with the air of having heard the ranting a million times before. I felt like I was watching myself and I can watch that episode over and over again and still find it funny. I promise I'm not always like Julia but when I'm stressed we are the same person.

So I guess whether you find it funny or not is related to how much you identify with one or more of the characters?

Calmhappyandhealthy · 30/12/2024 19:24

The very very last episode, I cried and cried. So bloody sad ....the tickets 🥺🥺🥺

MyStylish40s · 30/12/2024 19:24

@JMSA Have you watched Catastrophe? It’s written by one of the writers of Motherland, and she’s the main character in catastrophe. It’s much funnier, but also quite dark
