Motherland. To say I thought it would be funnier is an understatement.

I've just started watching it today, and I'm on episode 5 of Season 1.

So far I've had one 'sort of' laugh out loud. But I don't think I can watch any more.

Kevin - irritating to the point of wanting to tear my hair out.

The Absent Husband - just why? And who would put up with that?

Julia - pretty good.

Liz - probably the least unfunny thing about it 👍

Is it just me who's not getting it?

Just watch something else.
People have different styles of humour. There's probably stuff you find funny that other people don't like.

KnittedCardi · 30/12/2024 18:08

I agree with Cheese. Motherland is brilliant, I've watched it several times, and Fleabag. Outnumbered was good. Most of the other comedies are rubbish. Mrs Browns Boys, just why, grim. Gavin and Stacy I don't get.

boysmuminherts · 30/12/2024 18:09

It's absolutely brilliant, the characters are so hilarious.

Strikeoutnow · 30/12/2024 18:11

@JMSA Phoenix nights was brilliant, the talent show is epic. I don’t think I’ve found anything funnier tbh. Have you seen this country?

Buxomblondie · 30/12/2024 18:11

I only really enjoy watching Amanda and Julia. I don't actually find Liz all that funny tbh. I find Anne hard to watch in the first 2 series. Meg has some good moments but some absolutely cringe ones too. Some of the jokes just don't land tbh and attempts at any sort of storyline were iffy, like when meg got ill and when Julia made up with paul after havign a crush on Garry.

All that said, I do like it and I'm looking forward to Amandaland!

YouWouldntKnowWhatIMean · 30/12/2024 18:11

I think Motherland is quite funny(ish) and easy to watch. I don't really like any of the characters- particularly Julia, who I don't relate to at all and would definitely not be friends with irl. It doesn't make me laugh out loud and I've no real urge to re-watch it, but I have watched all the episodes. There are definitely much better and funnier shows out there!

Mrs Brown's boys and Gavin and Stacey should be outlawed 😂

sparkleystuff · 30/12/2024 18:13

I loved it. I also loved Mum. My kinda humour.

YourChirpyFatball · 30/12/2024 18:14

I loved Meg. What a riot she was at partying and then next day all bright and bushy tailed. My favourite character. Also that line from Julia to her mother, something like. "And here I am looking after your grandchildren " 😂

Gem359 · 30/12/2024 18:15

Oh god, Kevin shutting his wife in the loft is hilarious IMO, I love him - so wet and desperate. #shitshop is my favourite episode.
Fleabag on the other hand I couldn't get past the first episode. I thought she was completely dislikeable in every way. I felt grubby and like I needed a good wash after watching.
I guess different people just like different things.

arethereanyleftatall · 30/12/2024 18:15

The Absent Husband - just why? And who would put up with that?

Thousands upon thousands of women if the mumsnet threads are anything to go by

Hertzdonut · 30/12/2024 18:17

It had some funny lines in it but it felt to me like all of the jokes had been done before in other tv shows/ movies/ stand up.
Overall I found it more depressing than anything.

emmax1980 · 30/12/2024 18:17

It's a marmite drama, I loved it. Its a bit like The Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special, I liked the end, others loved it all.

Doitrightnow · 30/12/2024 18:18

My DH likes it and I watched it to please him through gritted teeth. I found Julia really stressful to watch, she's so chaotic and selfish. I would hate her if I knew her in real life.

I did like some of the later episodes (meeting Amanda's Mum for example) but not enough to watch it again.

Liker · 30/12/2024 18:19

I really enjoy Motherland and Kevin is my favourite - he is so wet, but funny too.

Doodleflips · 30/12/2024 18:19

Yanbu.
I did not find it funny, the characters really annoyed me. I think it’s rubbish.

GroovyChick87 · 30/12/2024 18:20

I couldn't disagree more. I absolutely love it and have watched it over and over again. I'm not usually into comedy stuff but I really love Motherland and Anna Maxwell Martin's character, Julia.

Nikitaspearlearring · 30/12/2024 18:20

I really love it. Kevin and Amanda make me squirm, as does Liz but in a different way. I absolutely love Meg, who turns up in the second series (IIRC) but my favourite is Amanda's Irish friend. So many small moments to love! E.g. when Kevin accidentally leaves his jacket in Amanda's kitchen and later on she tells him that her DH wasn't best pleased. Kevin says "But he wouldn't have known it was mine!" and she says, "It had your name stitched in it, Kevin."

OTOH I find most American shows boring because the humour is not for me, and I can't watch Gavin and Stacey. There you go. Funny old thing, humour!

It’s so interesting, isn’t it, how subjective this is. I adore Gavin and Stacey, and found Motherland and Fleabag unwatchable.

Mrs Brown’s Boys though - words fail me.

Newuser75 · 30/12/2024 18:22

I love motherland! Have watched it about 3 times 🙈.
Also love gavin and Stacey.

spoonfulofsugar1 · 30/12/2024 18:22

I didnt find it particularly funny. Kevin was irritating and his acting was hammy. Julia was also irritating. I get shes supposed to be relatable but the whole forgetful, constantly stressed schtick got annoying. Also she was constantly wimpy, not saying no to the crap nanny, or Amanda. Liz was great.

fashionqueen0123 · 30/12/2024 18:22

I love it! So sad it’s not being made anymore. The horror of a swimming party would be so true. Who on earth would do that! I think the absent husbands just show how many women feel alone looking after kids.

looking forward to Amanda land!

RedDeadReflection · 30/12/2024 18:24

I couldn't stand Julia. Liz was great in my opinion. The show as a whole though, was disappointing.

GellerYeller · 30/12/2024 18:26

I totally agree OP about Phoenix Nights.
Fleabag and Mrs Brown leave me cold.
Motherland, I do enjoy. Largely because the school mum characters and dynamics really resonate. Yes, Julia appears quite selfish but she’s got the absent husband, useless in-laws and work with no childcare in place. Eventually a drunk Liz calls her out on it at Anne’s after party.
Series 2 and the last Christmas special are worth hanging on for.
