AIBU to think Montalbano should have ended it with Livia and let her move on years ago?

I came in late to the TV series, maybe 4rth, Just watching the first one for the first time. Yeah, I get Livia is bit naggy on the phone but he's just so dismissive and horrible and over the rest of the series he shags anyone who gives him the slightest encouragement.

SPOILER

Then, in the final episode, when Livia has finally had enough and probably too old to have kids, she dumps him, only to have him ride off into the sunset with the new forensic officer.

He may be a great detective but even for fictional detectives, he's more than a dick than most.

YANBU. He sort of strings her along, she took the bus to visit him for ages then he meets someone... in the episode that the actor directed rather amateurishly.

He should have done.

But the author knew how he wanted the story to end, and didn't want to die and leave it unresolved. So when he was in his 70s he wrote the final story (with Livia in it) and then kept writing in the 'gap', expecting to only have a few books left in him. Then he lived - and kept writing - to the age of 93.

Is the last episode newly released? I thought I'd seen them all but don't remember that one.

Same here.
Love Montalbano -first read the books years ago before the series (recommendation in mumsnet in…2006 ish😀) and one of my surnames was LiviaBurlando.
But I always thought the depiction and the way he writes about women very unconvincing - especially as Camilleri had he has three or four daughters! And the casting if the Livias was terrible (they should have chosen me😂) especially the skinny neurotic one who was more New York than Italy.
The best Livia was in the Young Montalbano and I thought that relationship was much more convincing (and massively better acting apart from pantomime villain young Mimi)

The final episode was quite recent but not brand new. Last year or the year before, I think.

I really disliked the final episode.

Totally agree, including about Mimi! The young Montalbano and Livia actors were lovely, and good together.
